Sorry guys, I just realized that I mislabeled the word 被 as a “conjunction” instead of a “preposition”, although I hope that it would not affect your understanding.

I think that the passive voice can sometimes be expressed even without 被. So 我的鱼吃完了 could mean either "My fish has finished eating" or "My fish has been eaten". ( I suppose it would depend on whether the fish was on the table or in the aquarium. :-) Also... Some people say that 被 should only be used if the outcome is undesirable. So 我的披萨被妈妈吃完了 is fine for saying "My pizza was eaten by mom". But 我的披萨被妈妈做好了 seems a bit unusual for saying "My pizza was made by mom". It may be better to use 由 or 是...的 instead of 被. For example: 我的披萨由妈妈做好了. 我的披萨是妈妈做好的.

叫, 给 and 让 are RARELY used and only within some dialects. I think including them in this video is just creating confusion.
@qianfeizhou82652 жыл бұрын
If you tried to read some Chinese novel or talk to some native Chinese people who is also not perfect at standard Mandarin (well, in most cases), you would find that they would use 叫, 给, 让 more often as substitute for 被 when they speak. In fact, on the contrary, 被 is more formal and basic, and the others are more casual, native and practical in daily conversations.

Hello! Great videos with great animations as always. The way you structure your explanation in combination with the coloured part of the sentences is really helpful! I have a question about 被叫让 and 给. They all mean by. But what are the sublte differences? For what meaning are each characters preferred?
@ChineseGrammarSimplified4 жыл бұрын
被叫让 are functional words that are placed between the Object (the thing) and the Subject (the doer). 给 is used before the third party (to whom), independent from the Subject and the Object.

When used for build passive voice statements, they are often interchangeable. However, 被 is the most formal and literal expression to use.

The first two points are definitely valid. 叫 is more often used in some local dialects than the others. However, I am not sure that给 started off as a grammatical mistake and later became a fad that got widely adopted.
