Hi Wes, I am studying English, watching your KZbin lesson from a country side of Japan. I did not know many words, such as perilous, obfuscate, nonplussed, tantrum, and puerile, but I am glad to know what I guess the meaning of each word from the context was close to your explanations. It really encouraged me to read more even if I do not know the perfectly meaning of unknown words. Please make another video to teach different examples. BTW, I feel like I heard your baby girl talking? Good to hear it! I recall the time I was raising my daughter. Thanks a lot.

From Gustav: I am having a lot of trouble with vocabulary words. I read it over and over and over, but still next time I still can't remember the word, Why is it happening? I am worried. Does it mean I am dumb? How to I make it better? It still feel 'komisch' [strange] and foreign. How I get use to the words? I am worried about it. I think it takes too long to get words in memory. How can I make it better? Go faster?
@InteractiveEng4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gustav. I understand your frustration. I felt the same when learning Spanish. What I would do is try to read in order to build my vocabulary. But I would try to read story books (200 pages) that was a little above my level. I was reading books for teenagers or young children. I'd still come across many words I didn't know, but I would not look all of them up in the dictionary because that would make reading so slow. I'd just put the words into context. But if I came across the same word two or three times, then I would look it up in the dictionary and then try to find a picture (something I could look at because I'm a visual learner) so I could better remember the word. Because I came across the word multiple time, I felt it was either common word or a word very relevant to the story. For the most part, it did help with my reading comprehension. As I continued to read, I'd discover the words again. If I had forgotten, I'd look it back up. If I remembered, I'd keep reading. This worked well with story books because authors tend to use the same words throughout a story, especially when writing for children. This technique would be more challenging if reading shorter, news articles. But you could still give it a try. Just keep reading and I'm confident you'll continue to improve. 😊
