Hi Zen, I know you probably know this but I'm just pointing out that people generally use a sine wave for a bend +/- effect. But sometimes a triangle wave helps for a cleaner PWM sort of deal. Really like the video, keep up the good work man

you can fm some complex wavetables to make them heavier, or just go full hardcore and watch SeamlessR, he uses FM almost like he was the one to invent it
@ZenWorld
@ZenWorld 7 жыл бұрын
I find using 2 complex waveforms like Spectrals tend to fck the signal up big time. It can be done smoothly but I prefer using it FM with the basic waveforms and evolving from there. Didn't go much into it but check out how to make wavetables easier for that.

2 examples: 1. VR's Crispy SQ fm'd by +2oct sine with some remapping 2. Cymatics Blaze, 1st one normal and 2nd one squarified and fm'd by a 0oct sine from a sub osc
@OSCOMusic
@OSCOMusic 7 жыл бұрын
I feel with serum you have to go to extra lengths to get a nice complex sound out of it as you can only fm one oscillator to the other (i.e 2 operators if we are talking FM). You can create more complex sounds when you have more operators like in FM8, Sytrus and Ableton's Operator. Serum is great don't get me wrong. I use it all the time but for the sounds you are talking about try a synth that is dedicated to FM.

the way i understand fm, is you're pulling up frequencies from B into the A wave form or vise versa, because you can't here certain tones normally bringing them up into hearing range at a % rate of volume and frequency. You tend to notice the higher % you go the more inaudible the tone gets. when people fm complicated wavetables its much harder because youre basically looking for the % where the tones line up from one wavetable to another, as sinewaves hit all of them its always going to sound nice, using square for example skips every 2nd one making it harder to find a nice spot where the volume cuts out the off frequencies but brings out the ones youre looking for. saws can sometimes work because of the freqencies but ideally youre looking for a needle in a haystack. its better to find/make good wavetables and use sinewaves than it is to fm something with a saw or a crazy wavetable. ideally if you want something to be fmed because you want something strong just use resynthesis and keep creating new wavetables and dropping them in and fming again.

The ideal saw just has a shitload of upper harmonics. It's gonna have a lot of roughness. You gotta shave down your upper harmonics as appropriate, or let only a few high frequencies ring out for a lo-fi digital sound. There's a lot of amazing sounds that show up pretty easily once you have some experience. Also, other intervals than octaves and perfect 5ths are good. Less consonant intervals play nicer with one or two octaves of distance from the root note, but you can use close intervals for more clang and / or beating. It's just about experimenting, although staying conservative can be a safe bet I guess.

This guy ‘explaining’ FM is like a toddler trying to teach nuclear physics. He just got some software poked around a bit and made this video pretending like he knows all about it. Still, everyone thinks he’s great so he must be doing something right. Perhaps he has the coolest hat or something.
@ZenWorld
@ZenWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it probably it is as I don't understand the gist of what goes on behind FM Synthesizers to the extent I could program or create an FM Synth. With every video, I just explain what I know and use to create sounds for my soundbanks. The FM in Serum is dope, but it's like you said very basic compared to some more complex FM Synths out in the market that allow you to utilize more operators. Wish you the best take care.
