Use of Degenerate Dimension | Data warehouse Concepts

Welcome to aroundbi.
Degenerate dimension is dimensional in nature, but it sits in the fact table. In Fact, table, it is not acting as a key so it is not joined with any other dimension table. It does not have its own dimension table as all the related attributes have been placed in other dimensions.
The degenerate key can be used to group line items on a single order, or required to get average number of line items for an order. Please share your thoughts and feedback.

Order no is in millions so what why cant we have an order dimension? I still cant get the point.

This is because order number provides no value, the row connected to the order number will have references for dimensions that would be more useful. Like the order was for (X) product. In the case where an order number would associated to many rows the, yes there would be a cross-reference table (Dimension table) that would give you the many to one join your looking for so you can identify all products in a given order.

Thanks Varun. Degenerate dimension is dimensional in nature, but it sits in the fact table. In Fact, table, it is not acting as a key so it is not joined with any other dimension table. Whereas a surrogate key in a database is a unique identifier for an entity.

So, when we store the order_number inside the fact table, how will we come to know which line_items are present in one particular order_number? Because a line item is associated with a product_id (FK) will not have duplicates inside the fact table, so if a product_id has multiple order order_number, how will that be handled in degenerate dimensions?

What I can think as of now is , we can keep the line item with the fact table itself as degenerate dimension. So each row in fact table have both order_number and line_item as DD

Thanks man - I didn't know kimball had a method to identify unique transaction ID as a form of dimension. What's the point of this knowledge? What are we supposed to do with it? We cannot dimension it, we cannot slice and dice with it, at best we can get a count of transactions.

Transaction id can be categorised into degenerate dimension, in fact table itself. If report is created by using transaction id, end users may not aware of what transactions that are associated with it

I am watching quite a few of your videos. They are very helpful. You are very knowledgeable in regards to databases and data warehouses. My only qualm is your English pronunciation after 1:22 into the video. My parents are also South Asian, but it is very difficult to understand what you are saying. No offense intended, but I had to go back in the video several times to try and understand what you were saying about the Order Number. Do you happen to have a written script that you read off of that explains what you were trying to say in written form?
