/ loisdavidsonart www.etsy.com/u... Today's demo could easily be used for a Christmas or Holiday/Midwinter card design, paint it then print out your small copies to turn into card!
It's a loose frosty, misty landscape, using a pretty random wet in wet technique, and salt to create these lovely frosty flower patterns, unpredictable and very exciting. Why not give it a try, and use any colours you like, it would be lovely in pastel blues and pinks etc.
I used a limited palette of Cotman burnt sienna, indigo, burnt umber and paynes grey, and Winsor & Newton perylene green. I used ordinary fine table salt, various brushes including the extras large and medium Pro Arte Ron Ranson Hake brushes, 3/4" flat brush and a fine unbranded Chinese calligraphy brush, otherwise known as a rat liner. My board is at an angle of about 45 degrees tilt.
My paper is 100% cotton Millford, cold pressed, 140lb/300g weight, 11" x 15"/28cm x 38cm. Thanks for watching, and happy painting!

Hey Lois. Be sure to try that frog tape out I told you about a few days ago as you will not get those bleeding edges that I see in this painting on the right side. It comes in yellow which I use and is less sticky or green has more sticky. The stick factor is determined by the paper so I have both kinds. Also different kinds of salt like coarser grind works well and even ice cream rock salt as you can pound it to the desired size and sift it out as yiu do get powder too. That can work the different sizes though if you do some testing to see the outcome. One other thing that gives a different texture and is what I would call experimental and more random unknown results is to get some ninety one percent alcohol in a spritzer and give it a go. Depending on the brand and color of paint I have had some nice effects. 91 percent thought not seventy.

Many thanks, but I will stick with the masking tape, it doesn't matter about any bleeding through into the white border as it won't show when the painting is mounted/matted and framed

Lois, I notice you generally pull your paint directly from your pallet instead of premixing washes. Perhaps it helps keep the paint more concentrated? Is this your usual practice? Thank you for your demos. They are easy to understand and follow.

I love the colour combination, the perylene green warms up the greys nicely and the burnt sienna gives a lovely warm glow. A great tip about tracing paper trees and cottages to test your layout,I will give that a go. I’ve tried various salts ; dry and in solution (including my contact lens solution!) all give similar but different effects! Just don’t use Himalayan rock salt- the pink really stains!!

So beautiful Lois dear! I love using the salt and it’s perfect for landscapes. I’m going to give it a go again soon since it’s been awhile. Also loving the way my Christmas abstracts are coming out. It’s impossible to make any two look alike. Another thing I’m noticing with painting in the loose style is how different it looks after completely dry for a couple of days. It’s magical to watch. Thank you for sharing all your tips. You are a very gifted artist. Blessings to you!

Thanks Lois, this turned out very well and has given me the incentive to try it out. Just got back from the States so I need to warm up my painting skills a bit. The salt advice was useful - my problem with that, I realise now, was the wetness of the paint .

Hi Lois I tried this but it the colors are really flat after drying up. Could it be I have to much water in my brush? So frustrating to find the right balance between water and pigment. I love your style of painting so much!
