Bag seams to be really good, and full of features i like. But i prefer different approach. I would start with choosing my gear first - as this will hugely vary person to person, based on skills, needs, environment etc. Then, when i have an idea of the volume, i will choose my backpack to fit it all. Anyway, great vid, thanks for sharing. Regards from Ireland :)

Valid point, I’ve done it both ways, pack and essentials first and the way of leaving pack selection for last. The main stumbling block I found was that after building my gear (flashlight, axe, etc) I found myself selecting a bag that was too large and then I work to fill it lol. Thanks for the comment glad you enjoyed the video

Very nice pack! The 5-Cs originated with Dave Canterbury. Nice kit, no problems. However, having taught backpacking, survival, SAR, back-country trail crew, etc I have learned, and advocate to entry-level folks this: Get your stuff then get your pack. Because all to often folks get a pack only to discover all their stuff won’t fit into the pack ! (external clanking-dangles are a No-No.). But I do like your pack and if it suits your needs then great. Cool? OBTW, my fav pack was a French Foreign Legion Canvas/leather X-frame. Alas, I wore it out.

I figured it was Cantebury. About the choosing the pack first or later, its a tough call because even if you choose the pack after you build the foundation and add the custom stuff, odds are you get a size too large or too small. Personal pref is about 35L for a 3 day bag. But thats only after experience and also bear in mind the pack size differs depending on the season. I'd love to get my hands on that Legion pack, but haven't seen one in a long time.

I enjoyed the vid and the bag that u selected, but i belive that there will be 2 types of persons in a SHTF scenario. Those who are preparred and those who are not prepared. So IMO, Despite the bag that someone will select. I believe that one prepper will be able to recognize another prepper. Its just like spotting the off duty security oficers at ur local Wal-Mart. They give themselves away. 1. There atire: baseball cap, t shirt, shorts, Sneaks/loafers that were not purchased at WM. 2. There carecter: quite, always alone very observant 3. There behavior: they are in Wal-Mart, they wonder around the store with an empty cart? But they never buy a thing. Good vid and enjoyed the 5 Cs. I do believe you are correct Dave Canterbury posted the 5 Cs in an online article on June 26, 2018. Im certain the 5 Cs go back further. Thx for the vid and for sharing it.👍

Thanks for the video, nice looking pack. I’m surprised the kit is so minimalist, though. A sleeping bag and mat are essentials in my opinion. Relying on fire for warmth overnight is a risky strategy, it takes extra energy to gather and cut firewood, if there’s enough dry to find, and unless you use very big logs which are a lot of work to cut and carry, a fire needs feeding every half hour or so, all night, which doesn’t make for a good night’s sleep. If you have a hand injury it’s a real struggle to gather all that wood, and a fire draws attention to your camp that you may not want. It takes 10 times more energy to build a shelter and gather firewood than it does to carry a few pounds of gear all day.

I was always told you never pick the pack first you always get the pack last so you make sure it's big enough to fit everything and as far as the pack fitting in with Urban Ore wilderness and whether it attracts attention it's kind of a joke because in the right situation that pack is going to be a target for people that don't have anything no matter if it's bright pink or if it's camouflage
@TheSurvivalOutpost
@TheSurvivalOutpost 5 жыл бұрын
I've done it both ways, pack first or pack last. When I choose the pack last I would find I'd either have too much space and then felt like I needed to add in unnecessary gear or purchase another pack. I like packing the 5 C's first with the pack, then I know exactly how much room I have left over. I think its reasonable to assume that for 3 days you won't be choosing a tiny pack...but thats my personal pref. Also yes I can agree that quite possibly anyone with a pack on can be target not matter design or style of pack. I've gone both ways on this before as well.

Nice vid. But for me back to front. Kit first, in a garbage bag. Take that shopping try it in store see how it rides with your gear. Throw 4 nalgenes or ex army bottles full in as well. Food water weight. See if pack DOES hold all your gear, leaves room for a fleece or 2, sox, a sleeping bag hang point etc. Buying a bag first, thats the way to end up with 2 or 3 packs. Also consider the ALICE pack, to demonstrate ventilation from an external frame if you are in a hot climate. Plenty of brands Osprey, Berghaus etc have civvie packs of good denier strength with a off your back suspension system. Pricey, but you can either get the right pack, or be very very dehydrated. Personally what works for me is a bit of civie kit, and military. Osprey pack Atmos 65. Nice non offensive civie looking pack. Strong can easy hold 20kg and not fall apart if you want to go heavy. Which I dont. I get some higher end civie hiking stuff thats lighter than military gear. Im in Australia. Damn hot most of year. Hydration is key. My old ALICE harness from the army. Yoke belt and 4 waterbottles it blends with pack many dont notice it, alloy and stainles cups canteen to cook in boil water etc. Rides on your hips the weight isnt even noticable. Plenty of those types of harnesses and bottles about, or you can get nalgene kidney spaped bottles to fit them. And ffs SOCKS. On a 1 day hike even I take sox. Change them midday thru the day, youll feel refreshed walk further easier under load
@TheSurvivalOutpost

I've worked it both ways, buying the bag first, buying the pack last. In the latter step, I ended up with a pack that was too large and had to make a decision to scale down the gear or buy a new pack. Either way when your a newb, its going to be some trial and error involved. I'll check out that Osprey pack. Also, you located in Australia got me wondering how accessible water sources are? When I think of Australia I don't think of a country with lots of water?

I would buy what you need and then get a bag. I bought a bag first and it was a big bag so being a noobie i thought i had to fill it and it was too heavy. Get the essentials and decide what size pack works for you and your needs.

It's a toss up for me, I've bought the gear first and then needed a monstrous bag to fit all the crap. Then found out the bag was too heavy so I eliminated a bunch of gear and had to buy another pack lol. My general rule is to look for a bag between 30-40L. I have been struggling with my next primary fixed blade choice. Got it narrowed down to 4, the Tops Silent Hero and Operator 7, or ESEE 5 or 6. ESEE is kinda beat to death, but they are great knives. Everybody is jumping on the vertx bandwagon! It’s a nice pack but not having compression straps is a big negative for me and the width is also a issue. I like slim fitted packs that are tight to your body. For me the size is to much for a get home situation and not big enough for “I’m leaving home”. Vertx is a great company but the Recce Ruck by Blackscout is still hands down the best pack out especially for a 72hr period. One pack to do it all and able to run different systems for whatever the circumstances. Great review though and I do like the color for a gray man look.👍🍻

It does seem like that the flecktarn camo works in most areas, except for areas like the desert, arctic, urban or most winter areas that get more than 5.5ft of snow per year at any elevation. Otherwise the flecktarn pattern can work very well. Of course there’s the possibility of people making flecktarn camo for each of the areas I’ve mentioned. Which I personally have never seen, but if you’ve seen them let me know!

I found a USB recharger for it but haven’t bought it yet. Seems AA or 9V would be your best option and carry extra batteries. I’m definitely not an expert in comms but based on my use the radio holds a great charge. Used it for hours non stop on the ground and between vehicles.

you're rockin' that Jarhead, Jarhead. the Gamut is a nice pack but, a little too pricey for my budget. before it was the 5C's(10C's) there were the 10 Essential Items in 1974. great info, Leatherneck. Semper Fi.-Scout

Nice usful video. But, if you want a full Tang knife why do you have a Mora Kansbol please? Its not full tang. Its not even a rat tail. Its partial tang. I know this because my mate Thomas is one of the Directors of Mora. Dont get me wrong, one of the best knives in the world for the price, ive used mine all over scandanavia, Europe, North africa with zero drama. But, thought i should give you the heads up. Once again, nice video. In fact im getting my daughter who live your side if the pond look at getting me one of those great packs.

@@TheSurvivalOutpost for sure, its best value Mora there is. Not much more then the Companion HD, cheaper them the Bushcraft Black, 80% the strength of the Garburg at less then half the price. Its just to much win. I tell everyone to buy one. Nice channel BTW, subscribing was easy decision :-)

@Bill Randall Most societies alienate subgroups in times of resource deprivation. It is how they bend without shattering into full on anarchy. If you happen to be in an alienable subgroup, you will be bugging out before the majority of people. Modern society is interesting in that it is likely to shatter like tempered safety glass down to the nuclear family rather than flake off demographics as a safety valve.

@Glenn Livingston That's a good question and it is examined well in allegory with all of the zombie shows. Unfortunately, this is one of those issues that has to be resolved in law of large numbers. Get away from the masses until they largely fight each other and/or starve to the point of harmlessness. What that means is something you should do your own calculus on.

@@TheSurvivalOutpost me and my best friend (wife) came up with that plan a few years ago during a conversation with someone who is a fervent TEOTWAWKI fanboi and we decided that if the world ever got as bad as he fantasized about the best thing to do was exactly what I first commented. In reality, with most realistic scenarios, between the two of us we can do pretty good with our skill sets.

I would not use the gamut. The water bottle pockets are limited to smaller bottles. The internal zipper pockets limit the internal volume if over stuffed. I use mine as a EDC pack. I would use the gamut overland as a bug out bag. I switched from the gamut to the EDC ready pack as my get home bag.

Never seen the overland. The Gamut works for me as a summer BOB, for winter I might have to go with something a bit larger. But for my summer kit which weighs < 30lbs the Gamut works. I'll check out the overland and will def look at the store if I'm in that area.
