I watch your videos often. They had me on a tiny little 140 dirtbike, in the riding course that I took. I had to do the ministry test for my license on it as well. When I got home, I pretty much re- taught myself on my Sportster 1200, via watching your videos. One of your lessons that I watched saved me from being badly hurt. Thank you!!!

Your videos are so helpful, thankyou. I hit the front brake too hard when I first got my bike parking it, hit the front and dropped it so I learned my lesson. I'm hesitant to use the front brake too much because of that but working on overcoming that, especially in a curve, thanks for posting this. That surprise in the curve is where I'd use this most, easy go easy lol.

Thanks Jerry. This is truly valuable information. For my understanding, when you mentioned rolling off the throttle, are you indicating zero throttle when you slightly squeeze the front brake? The way I do it, I roll off the throttle to match the entry speed posted or a little above. I then hold the brake lightly (Front or Rear) especially if the corner is blind. When I see the exit, I stand the bike up and add more throttle. Am I correct here?

I was a little worried when I saw the title, because there’s a lot of misinformation on this subject. But worry not because Jerry was right as usual👍In fact the key was even presented within the first minute when he said, “the front tire will take a tremendous amount of force, but what it won’t take is an abrupt force.” I know that’s true because I did it in a class, on a track, and riding a bike that had outriggers (training wheels). When leaned over, you’ll go down at any speed on any surface if you snatch at that right lever. But when applying a smooth, gradual braking force, and I could barely squeeze hard enough to tuck that front tire.

Linked brakes make no difference in trail braking or low speed turns. They only have an effect when braking hard in a stop from high speeds and you make the mistake of using only one brake.

@@motorman857 thanks. Ive only ridden a early 2000s BMW R1150RT with the linked brakes and absolutely hated them. But wasnt as experienced as i am today when i rode them. Seemed like even a tiny bit of rear brake the fronts would come on fairly firmly.
@olenilsen4660
@olenilsen4660 Жыл бұрын
@@danielhildebrand6892 I never tried those linked brakes, but the mere idea of it disgusts me. I want to be in complete control of my bike, I don´t want it to apply forces where I don´t intend to apply them! Dragging rear brake really shifts the geometry of the bike compared to only maxing out the front, with the rear wheel free. Now, I get that it sounds extreme, but once in a while, you´ll find yourself in a bit of an odd situation. In those cases, that is when I really need my bike to perform according to my inputs only, and not think of doing anything else. One near-death example: I was riding a seriously steep gravel road downhill, on a F800GS. These bikes with ABS can toggle ABS on or off. Not select which wheels ABS will apply to. So ABS is a great feature on gravel, to avoid locking up your front wheel, which will send you into mother earth in 0.2 seconds. Now, the one thing I´ve never been told, and never experienced until that day, is that if your rear is also ABS, when you get to a hairpin on a gravel road and brake hard, ABS will send you straight off the cliff! If you could lock it up however, the rear wheel would pivot around your front tire, to help you through the turn. In effect, my safety feature (ABS) now actively wanted to send me off the face of a cliff. That´s when I switched it off in order to have a fully operational rear brake for the rest of my descent. I love ABS on the front, I don´t have the skills to benefit from a locked front wheel, but it is a prime example of a system built for safety that actively disobeys its task because it simply does not have enough information. This comment is far too long already, but if anyone read this far, my only wish for future "tecnology upgrades" on any bike, anywhere, is that it should always be easily customizable by the rider, and they should never have to change these settings every time they start up their bike. Settings should be remembered, so that you always set your arse down on a bike you know will do what you want. Because most people do these settings once, and it will fulfil their needs. Changing this every time you turn the key serves only the purpose of annoying people that payed an obscene amount of money for their toy...

@@motorman857 I know they will be helping out in most situations, that´s not what I was commenting about. I´m just saying there might be situations where you want 100% control of what each wheel does. I can´t really think of any situation on paved roads, but on gravel roads, there are plenty options.

It’s kind of funny how… I went 30 years without riding.. I’m back.. I bought a Sportster, traded for street Bob.., traded for lowrider st…. And also bought a road glide.. a week after I got the lowrider.. lol. I’ve got buddies/ acquaintances that ride.. they seemed almost offended that I have 2 nice bikes.. I a.so took classes.. and I watch all these videos and I practice slow speed drills,, They almost seemed to laugh that I would practice… like they think.. I don’t know how to ride.. and they do…. But I have put on just shy of 10,000 miles in the past 6 months… they probably would put on a thousand a year.. I was riding with one.. the biggest offender in my mind… just a few days ago.. he’s on a street glide.. and thinks he’s the greatest most knowledgeable person ever… he got a surprise when I was riding circles around him.. and he knew it…. That’s the best part.. is he knows I am already a better rider than him, and he knows I know it.. it was painfully obvious.. he can’t do a u turn.. not every time anyway.. he’s an ok rider .. but he can’t stop his bike with both feet up.. I noticed every stop.. his feet were on the ground . He’s lucky he’s tall which makes it easier to balance his bike. But every u turn.. his foot was down.. and you could see lack of confidence.. kinda made my day… I practice drills all the time.. every ride starts out with a few minutes of drills,, through the parking lot.. I have a great place to do it,, lots of mediums to round about on, to my figure 8 drills etc…

"I'm gonna pick up some speed so I can practise using that front brake." In all honesty, Jerry, that's what it's all about to me. Trail braking is great I know that, all ppl don't. But here when a road is twisty, the speed limit generally is 70 km/h, and then however little I'm trail braking I lose too much speed in the bend. This esp at wide bends. The No1 priority is Positioning - and if that's obtained it's a breeze to pass the bend.

As usual, excellent instruction! Does this also apply when going down a steep decline such as Mulholland drive, or should the rear brake be used instead? It appears that physics would take over and cause the rear to start sliding while using the front brake in a sharp hairpin curve on a steep decline.
@motorman857
@motorman857 Жыл бұрын
If you're talking about a 10 or 12 mph turn, use the rear brake. Anything above that speed, front brake. But make sure you squeeeeeze that front brake. Don't snatch it or grab it.

Thanks for the clarification Jerry. I’m riding in Italy now and these hairpin turns can be a bit tricky. Normally I’m going through the curve around 10-20mph…it that. The rear braking technique has helped a lot, especially going up. I’ll keep in mind the front braking technique as appropriate.

When you need to touch the front brake on a bend, just means you made an error on your planning for that corner. Expect the Unexpected at all times. Slow in, fast out. Trail braking should be used and practised on a track in a safe environment if required. My Opinion. It's a bit different if you are an expert track rider, which most riders are not.

Conversing with utubr advocating trail braking and he admits.....you are more likely to screw up using front brake than using back brake, and if screw up using front brake it will be worse than screwing up using back brake Any means of slowing adds weight to the front tire, the front tire has lots of weight on it already, set a 2x4 on jack and find place where it will lift front and back tire equally......that spot is way up front Using front brake while leaning will raise you up, back brake will not.....yes yes yes if everything good then you are just barely applying the brake....if you accelerate it will raise the bike up from lean...the acceleration you do is only applying power to the rear wheel (not coasting) if you are in the correct gear, when you gently roll off the throttle you will slow down(engine braking) without using brakes and without dangers of screw up from brake usage
