For the vehicle, add a ziplock bag in the glove compartment with a paper city and a paper state map. Also, if you live in a city with public transit, add a bus map and schedule and some cash to buy a bus ticket. A battery charger/tire inflator/jumper cables are good to have as well. A gallon of water would be good too.

A tire inflator is such a useful thing to have even in urban life. So many times I have had tire problems because some idiot dropped nails or screws on the road. You can keep yourself mobile to get to a repairer with the inflator.

Without having named the concept....this 3 line system is something I already do to survive MN winters. I have been injured on ice and have directed my rescuer to my vehicle to obtain my sleeping bag to keep me warm until transport arrived. I have needed to jump my car and inflate a low tire and wished I had a device that could help me (I now do)! Please know you are covering a very important topic!!!

I’m retiring now from the Army and we’ve used it my whole career but I’ll look and see if I find something formal. But essentially first line is the essential gear you need no matter what, 2nd line is gear you need but doesn’t have to be on the body which is normally carried on a chest rack or body armor, and third line is really your sustainment gear, which is really things to replenish the other lines of gear, like food, water, ammo, additional medical. It’s hard to have a like specific list because it varies mission to mission. But if you’d like an actual list as an examples just let me know.

@@adaptablesurvival sorry another good way I explain it is if you had to ditch your ruck or drop excess gear do you have on your chest rack, belt, and pockets what you need to survive. The basics, fire starting, way to procure water, cordage, etc.

Thank you for this video. This is a great framework for plotting out one's requirements for various scenarios. My on-person load is a Swiss Army Knife, wallet, cell phone, packet of wipes, handkerchief, handgun. Ideally, I am properly dressed for the season. Subscribed.

The civilian version of TCCC is called Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (think police/SWAT..etc). Same concepts developed for civilian "tactical" law enforcement units.

Like the use of this division of what you carry when doing outdoor activities. I’d like to get some sort of carrying device for gear that isn’t a full pack for little 4-5hr foraging hikes. I can’t be bothered to carry a full backpack everyday, but am frustrated getting things like my gomboy, first aid, climbing rope/cordage and water bottle all into that “first line”, especially when I’m on rough terrain. I can back pocket the saw and folding knife, but a truly functional pocketable first aid kit for light hiking and those times when I need both hands to get up a rock outcropping or loose gravel slope but it isn’t practical to throw my water bottle up first… and worse if I find a patch of morels or something to pick, next thing I know I’m carrying a bag of that too.

Have you looked at a hip pack/Fanny Pack? Not the coolest, but just enough room for a few things.

My current 'go to' minimal setup is an MFH sling bag MOLLE'd to a water bottle pouch that also has a pocket. Can easily hold hootchie poncho or even hootchie tarp, 1100ml bottle, nesting cup and lid, cordage and pegs, spare multi-tool, fire kit, first aid, beverage/sustainment items, headlamp etc with room to spare depending on 'mission' (I added hand warmers, extra mylar blankets and candles for a recent hike in the snow, put it inside a dry bag when canoeing, or just grab it if I need to go somewhere in the wife's car). Condiderably smaller and lighter option for when a backpack seems excessive.

Canadian Military in their 82 pattern webbing Users Field Manual on how to put together the, then new kit, had Fighting Order, Battle Order, and Marching Order. None included pocket carry but that may have been covered under field craft. The USMC had a two part survival kit to put in each cargo pocket. SpecOps are very quiet on escape gear which is more legal than practical as all that info is out there from WWII Spies to modern ceramic razors, mini lockpicks, shims, diamond rods, plastic handcuff keys, Kevlar cord, etc., all for survival types to buy.

Awesome job bringing up LLRP and for those it means Long Range Long Reconnaissance Patrol Missions and tasked with going over ant threw and behind enemy lines to gather information about troop movements levels armor no armor and there current location of enemy units and reporting it back to the rear! In preparation and yes your load out consists of what’s on me what weapon system I have how much ammo I can carry and also plot points of initial access and egress in case of enemy contact and how to get out with vital situations being behind enemy lines and Paul is an awesome instructor and I’m happy to share with him knowing him also all of you following his channel as I do👍

Pretty good conceptualization... and pretty true. I have been down to nothing but what I had on me, sopping wet dragging out of a river into 4" of snow - So thankful for the few useful things I ALWAYS carry on me. (mini 5Cs)... If I have my pack too, I can easily walk out, maybe 5 days... If I can get back to the pickup, and the sawbox in the back, I'll be smoothin it , either hunkered down for a week, or walking out...

Great discussion! I used to be aircrew in the USAF so I always liked talking with the guys about what we could stuff into the pockets on our flightsuit. I really enjoyed the survival vests and it has been nice to learn to carry similar items for routine backpack trips. Nowadays, I use the same principles that you teach and just tweak things for my life. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your next video.

Good ideas here. Im old school retired army and I just use a belt/harness set-up, but thats what I was brought up on, so I think it depends on how a person wants to carry like what works good for them. Many schools of thought here- as long as you have what you need is the most important aspect. Good video-

I love the concept! However, for me personally, I'd adapt that slightly: First line for me would be POCKETS. Like you I would carry stuff that would be needed on any expedition outdoors, away from built-up areas. Much like you, I'd carry lighter, cotton handkerchief/bandana, some sucking sweets (alleviate dry mouth, two small packets of GORP, but not tools. I's also always wear some headgear for shade protection, and for protection for spectacles in rain. In some instances I'd consider carrying a Silky Pocketboy folding saw. It's designed for pocket carry. Second line BELT: here I'd carry tools. Obviously my belt knife is the primary tool, plus a second multitool knife, hanging off the belt inside my trouser pocket, and a canteen of water (1.5 litres). I might even add a front pouch across the front for things like maps, headlamp, dark glasses, etc. Third line: PACK: this is where the bulk of the gear will be carried. Things that are needed more urgently in side pocket accessible without removing the pack, less urgent stuff elsewhere. Fourth line: VEHICLE: [where appropriate] This could be either car, truck, quadbike or horse. Gear carried here would be that gear that is either quite bulky or heavy: axe, shovel, large water container, camp equipment like tents, bedding, fishing equipment, hunting gear, fuel, stove, lights, generator, food resources, etc, whatever you don't need to carry on you - the list could be quite long, and will be influenced by the number of people in the party, if its not solo. Thanks for the video, it helped me clarify my thought s somewhat. I'll keep working on what goes where till I've got a good list. Maybe I'll share that some time. Cheers mate!
