Just bought one. I do SMT rework every day for my job, so it should be a fun distraction. Personal reccomendations: Pinecil soldering iron, get the large tips option. Most soldering I use the K knife tip. Even the tiny parts. Kester 0.8mm 60/40 Rosin Core solder Pretty much any basic Flux Pen, such as Kester 951 Chemtronics or Techspray desoldering braid (just don't get noname stuff really) Quick hot air rework station (not really needed for this project) Acetone and a brush for cleaning off flux, works a lot better than alcohol though it can disolve some printing and paint

Wana sell me your Dercoaster kit? Lol I'm honestly really bummed out I didn't purchase one before they sold out. I watched this video less than 10 min after it released this morning. Great video, looks loads of fun. The only trouble with tinning the pads this way is you'll not get the components to always sit perfectly flat. I would normally tin the pads and then solder wick them flat, then add solder to one pad and mount the component soldering that first pin, then go round the other pins. 0201 and 01005 requires my smallest tip on my Weller iron and a magnifier lol, quite tricky.

This is really awesome! One thing I might like to see is, especially on the initial practice bits, is a very simple/primitive thing that just tells you whether everything is (1) making contact and (2) not shorting/not in contact with adjacent pads. It feels kind of daunting to get a sense of what is and isn't okay when you have to get 30(?) things right before you can test.

I find this an amazing idea, to let people experience how it is, to work with electronic components. I have tons of experience, but it is hard to find people to pass my knowledge on. All the young people are more interesting in coding, instead development of electronic circuits. And get better understanding how things works. I'm retired now, and have tons of time. Even I still repair electronics and build computers. With technical knowledge, you learn to read datasheets, and pair the best components in your computer. It never let me down, for sure.

I am a terrible solderer. I recently pulled apart a katana 1070 to torch a 8cm copper water block onto it. I initially had it in a shallow bit of water to try not to pop the vapor chamber, but cluldnt get it hot enough to flow the solder. Took it out and vertically flowed it. And was sweet. But wasnt happy with the positioning and moved it a bit, then a bit more, then she *popped like an egg in the microwave. So the vapor chamber is removed and i put the block directly to the mounting plate (along with origonal cu fins) that the vaporchamber was on (prob can fit the case back on now). Just waiting for thermal paste to get posted. to then try and hope the solder covered block surface is flat at the right angle to conduct heat away effectively. (To add clarification, i initially dremelled out the 8cm*4cm of the fins on the copper heatsink and the cu block fit sweatly onto the vapour chamber) Cheers from shaun 😅

for the sake of a practical coaster, i think lower profile headers would be good, i feel like even 10mm is pushing it height wise. and also a plastic spacer ring, just something to fill the gap between the PCBs, to take the mechanical load off the headers (since a drink will weight several hundred grams) and (slightly) reduce water ingress from spills etc. i guess if you wanted to get real fancy, the spacer could be slightly rubbery and have threaded inserts, with countersunk holes in the PCBs so you could screw the whole thing together and have a slightly better seal, if you could hit even IP1x level performance, i think it would 10x the average lifespan of these if used as practical coasters. Obviously you can't do much to protect the USB port and the switch (without buying much more expensive parts), but those would probably survive a spill or two before corroding or getting gummed up, if left to dry out, but they take up a small percentage of the total edge length of the board, so the probability of a small spill / drink condensation droplets going there would be low. plus the spacer ring could have a slight lip over the unprotected parts. another option would be a solder jumper in parallel to the power switch, so that the user can leave the switch unpopulated and just short the jumper instead, to reduce the number of exposed things. if you have the spare IO, maybe a set of solder jumpers (or one of those super cute SMT DIP switches) away from the board edge to set the color program.

I see the solder used included lead. That type handles very nicely compared to lead free versions. If the solder includes flux that's usually enough. I don't recall ever needing to flood a board in flux like shown, even on older/corroded cones. Maybe more a problem for those that do it daily but also avoid breathing in the fumes. It isn't good for you although a little bit as an occasional enthusiast isn't likely to do you significant harm. Do take care if you have existing breathing problems.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz Жыл бұрын
You need to add flux when you do SMD soldering, since you can't just place the component and then flood it with fresh fluxed solder. The flux in the solder wire is substantially degraded by the time you place the component when you have tinned a pad. Even if you were careful not to burn it, go moderate temperature and work quickly, a beginner will have a much easier time with extra flux. Keep in mind most beginners use simple power-control irons as opposed to true temperature controlled stations, so their irons if they are hot enough to complete the solder joint, on initially touching down they're plain too hot and instantly degrade a large amount of flux. They also won't have the timing and the feel down at first. I think it's a good idea to give the beginner everything you can to make their first experience less frustrated, so a temperature controlled station (Pinecil is a fine suggestion for being small and occasional work), extra flux of adequate quality, good quality solder, it all helps. Tip cartridge heat sensing irons like this Pinecil where the sensor is in the tip rather than in the heater also help handle lead-free, and if it's decent lead-free with silver and copper additives, it can be remarkably hassle-free. It's become somewhat difficult to purchase leaded solder in EU, you need to go to professional suppliers and you need to ask, it's not being sold openly. You can also just order Mechanic brand from a Chinese seller, but being a good and popular domestic brand, there are lots of fakes out there, so neither way it's the best and easiest purchase experience. People also need to be advised and abide to wash their hands every time after handling leaded solder. Of course flux is a known massive health hazard as well, known to cause occupational asthma in half of the electronics workers even with air extraction, but only to the extent that you actually burn it off, and unlikely to be a substantial risk for occasional weekend hobbyists.

Question/Correction? At timestamp 7:27 you mention the triangle marking on the LED part marks pin 4 of the LED. This is normally pin 1 in every part I've ever handled. Is this a characteristic of the specific part in this project? I find it hard to believe one manufacturer would change this convention for any reason, and was wondering if you just misspoke... Great idea otherwise. Even though I'm an electrical engineer, suprisingly my education never really gave much opportunity to learn soldering techniques. I've picked it up over the years, but this would have been a great way to learn. (And I still may pick it up to practice!)
@JessicaThorst
@JessicaThorst 9 ай бұрын
dercoaster website mentions that the triangle is indeed for pin 4, not like how you're used to as you're saying. I don't know which is common, but I find it odd that opposites are marked (on the board vs on the LED) instead of the same on both

You missed one VERY important point - you have not specified the wattage of the soldering iron. The Amazon link does not specify it either; although it says 18 - 88 watts on the side of the iron that is not necessarily the output you need for the job you are doing. For older SIL and DIL packages I use a 15watt iron, but as I have not soldered the smaller packages I have no idea whether a 15watt iron is good enough. I have also just heard another ouch! - some capacitors DO have polarity markings. If you solder one of those on the wrong way round it gets very noisy, very messy and (if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time) very painful when it explodes.

I have been using a 50W soldering iron my whole life, never had any issues with tiny 0402 SMDs or large ground planes, altough I can imagine a 100W soldering iron would be nice on that. Good leaded solder, flux, right temperature and the right tip for the job are essential in my opinion.
