I am pretty new to Logic and DAWs , however I have basic music backgrounds and have known to try to create chords beginning with some other note than the root note. This technique really makes a lot of sense and using the piano roll to help use the same notes between chords is a brilliant idea. I also see that you are using one root note an octave lower to firm up the chord. I'll use this from now on.

Nice video Nathan 😊, question here. When I really want spaced out chords that are in multiple octaves, can I still voice lead? If so what could be the best technique
@NathanJamesLarsen3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yeah - so this is obviously the "starting point" lesson - if you will - but you can definitely do creative things and trust your gut but even when I'm doing more spaced out chords I try to minimize the amount of leaping unless I want something really specific, melodically.

@NathanJamesLarsen3 жыл бұрын
Yep - I agree but you gotta keep in mind most producers don't have this foundation laid out - so while it is "basic" to those of us who have been doing it a while, it actually matters a lot more than knowing some of the other more "advanced" stuff. Like - if you know how to make 7th chords and chord extensions but can't do basic voice leading - it'll still sound bad haha!

Hi Sorry I get what your talking about but don't understand because your playing the chords and showing them but you haven't said why or what the extra note you play with each chord is for. sorry not the best at understanding maybe I have just missed something simple here.
@NathanJamesLarsen3 жыл бұрын
Like I said - is a really tough concept for people who aren't familiar with it. You do need to know what notes a chord has for this to really make sense. So if you don't know what notes a G chord has or a C or whatever - then this is going to be almost impossible. Starting point is first learning WHAT notes each chord has and then this will make way more sense. Unless I'm misunderstanding what your issue is!
@-cbs-60533 жыл бұрын
@@NathanJamesLarsen I what each note is for C Your playing the notes to make the chord but an active or so down your adding an extra note that's the bit I don't understand
@-cbs-60533 жыл бұрын
Sorry I know w3hat each note is
@NathanJamesLarsen3 жыл бұрын
@@-cbs-6053 If you're asking about octaves then basically there are only 12 notes to work with in the whole piano (or any instrument) but an octave is just the same note up or down an octave - just changes the range of the notes. So a C major chord has the notes C-E-G But you can play those notes over the span of the whole piano in different octaves to change how it sounds. The notes a "different" but the only reason they are different is the octave they are in. Is that what you're asking about? Just wanna make sure we're on the same page.
@-cbs-60533 жыл бұрын
@@NathanJamesLarsen I think we are mis understanding each other here. I play guitar so I understand octaves and chords. I don't think we are going to get on the same page sorry I'm not able to explain what I'm trying top say properly. Great work though Love your content..
