Most those pruning saws are meant to cut only on the draw stroke. If you just stick the stick around a small tree you will have pleanty of leverage to cut easy and affectivly. And you can cut branches larger than your wrist. And if you have a long branch to start with . The tail end can be placed on the ground so it becomes a helping hand with a lot of leverage. This is still a really cool trick I had never seen before. Very usefull. Thank you.

I have seen several, other people on several, other channels use, talk about and even specifically demonstrate the plumber's vice. You are the first I have seen talk about/demonstrate it in a way where you don't have to squat. Part of me wants to break a stick over my head for not figuring it out, myself - kind of one of those things that when you see it done you think, "Duh, that's simple - why didn't I figure it out on my own?" Still, as one of those people who can't comfortably stay in that squatted position for very long I really appreciate you showing the alternate method.

CLOSE!!! But not quite! Put the other end of that sick on your left thigh with the left knee on the ground, and place your right foot further back to lock the stick with both legs for even more leverage and stability. Hold the end of the stick on the other side of your left leg (if the stick is long enough. I been using this trick for years in the woods and earlier in life (as an actual *plumber's* helper) on the jobsite!

Glad you mentioned the branch diameter. It would seem obvious and intuitive but imagine you've canoed, portaged, and hiked well into deep woods. You attempt this with a large diameter branch and strain your knee in the process.

A V notch cut in a downed log works well to wedge larger branches into to cross cut them too. I’ve even mad a short tri pod to hold logs in place

But if your knee caps (or joints in general) are prone to slipping, definitely only use the sitting on a stump method, so you have good control of the pressure under the knee.

@3:45 I think it worked just as well while sitting on the stump because your left hand / top of left thigh / back of right knee provided 3-point bending; whereas @2:40 with the right knee very flexed, your left hand was between your 2 knees; didn't need as much leverage from the left hand in that case.

As an electrician, I used a variation of this that (to me) is more comfortable - curious how it compares. As a right-hander I would hold the pipe (in your case a stick) in my left leg and use my left hand to hold the stick down against the top of my right leg, cutting with my right hand. So the stick goes behind your left leg, pinched behind the knee, and extends out over the front of your right leg which is bent so it's like a table or sawhorse.

I knew before I even saw the squat. Us electricians have used it since we were in our first years of the trade, as for me was many decades ago. Anymore I try not to kneel or sit on my heel so much anymore. That many years of working on a ladder, climbing under stuff, and kneeling to put in hundreds of thousands of receptacles does wear on the knees, feet, and back.

When making cuts it's good to consider the health of the tree and safety of hikers and wildlife. Deadhead cuts like the one you did direct plant energy down a dead end. Either there will be a cluster of growth or it will die leaving a stump. Good cuts direct energy to create flow and strong branches leading upward. An uncut branch has softer tips but a deadhead cut leaves stiff ends that can poke out an eye or puncture the skin. Angled cuts are especially bad. Wildlife at night can be injured by these. Well meaning trail clearers often make these cuts leading to trails lined with spikes. Cutting properly allows the tree to heal quickly and avoid rot and boring insects too. Know your trees as some are rare and slow growing while others are common and in no danger. Really enjoy your show and learning outdoor skills.

Good stuff, I teach my students this on courses but I call it the bushman's vice 😅 you essentially get the same leverage without having to bend if your lucky enough to find an appropriate height forked tree or tree brach. Put the wood through the fork and lever it against the fork till it locks in place and cut.

It's a good technique and it's important that folks don't ever attempt to alter it by cutting between the knees. Lots of arteries in that triangle that can put you in the dirt if you slip.

if you really needed to cut a larger branch...3" or a bit more.....you can position the branch in the plumber's vise away from the bottom of the knee crotch so you don't get hurt...but then put the branch in both knees the same way to stabilize it further. A bit of a balancing act, but if you become too unstable you can put your back against a tree to improve stability.
