Having recently purchased my first Audi S1 to sell on I realised that you can now buy an early one for the price of a new Up! GTI with a few options.
So I thought it would good to make a video comparing the two cars and see how they are similar and how differ and whether one was a better buy than the other.
I hope you enjoy it and feel free to comment!

Great video again, thanks Andrew. I’ve got an Up GTI on order largely due to your earlier videos. I’ve got a 997 4S as well but do a lot of short journeys which I think the UP will be perfect for (and a touch more economical than the 911...) We had a Puma many years ago which was great fun and drove brilliantly so I’m hoping the Up will drive a bit like or maybe a Mk 2 16V Golf which were also brilliant fun when they came out.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin, you are the kind of owner I imagined in the video! The Up! GTI actually drives a lot better than any Mk2 Golf in my opinion because it's got oodles of torque. OK it doesn't reward revving out like the Mk2 16v but I'd swap that top end for the 1.0 TSI's torque swell at 2000 rpm all day long because that's what makes you smile and give the car an inordinate turn of speed with so little weight to shift. I think you'll love it and having owned 4 996/997 911s I have a feeling you might actually find it more fun to drive on the majority of roads in the UK. Tell me I am wrong ;)

Thanks Andrew, I’ve got a suspicion you’ll be right. Like you, I think, I’ve got a believe that modern day sports cars are just too fast, and your either a bit frustrated or driving like an idiot! Add to this that living in SE London requires a 25 minute drive at least to get to some decent roads and it makes an even stronger case for the Up GTI (or something like the S1) in my opinion. Anyway, if I don’t like it I know where to send the invoice! :)

Hello Bailey. I suppose you can compare in with the Polo GTI but the Up! GTI is a compact hot hatch benchmark with a really strong following. The Polo GTI doesn't really have such a strong fan base, both amongst the press and owners. The point of the film really is to explore whether the Up's following is strong enough to tempt people away from a used S1 which on paper is a significantly superior car and when 4 years old/40k miles and still in great condition is exactly the same price. Hope you enjoyed it anyway :)

I agree. As a young keen driver I’d love the A1. It seems to be the best all rounder and a bit more of a performer than the UP GTI. However, I currently own a 62 Plate Non turbo up as my first car and I love it, it’s surprisingly quiet and spacious for what it is and decent residuals too. I can see what you mean about small cars being fun and I can imagine with a Turbo it would be a different animal to my 75hp Up, and a great way to enter the world of hot hatchery. Unfortunately I don’t think I’d be able to insure the A1, I got a quote on a MK4 Golf GTI recently and they wanted £6500 with 2 years ncb! I will definitely be considering the UP GTI in the near future in that transition period until I am able to afford another class of hot hatch maybe like the S1. The UP GTI is more obtainable for me as I’m getting quotes of less than £2000 ( age 18)In the meanwhile, let’s hope that teenagers in the UK don’t get hold of the Up GTIs and wrap them up meaning that insurance goes up for fellow petrol heads 😂 Oh and I’m building up my ncb a bit first as you can’t own either of these cars and have a black box!

Hey Dan, non-turbo Up! is still a very respectable first car. It would be a shame if you skipped Up! GTI and went straight to S1 as you'd miss out on a truly special car. Spend some time with an Up! GTI next and when it's time to change hopefully your insurance record will be good enough so you can insure something a little tastier, so much to choose from and most of it is getting more affordable as the days go by!

Oh the up is a great car, bought a 60hp one when I was 17, now im 21 and i have bought an up TSI (just months after that the gti was released..), tuned it to 140hp/230nm, fitted a milltek, a dump valve etc etc. Most fun is that literally no one has even a clue of how quick the car is, and its much more fun than a stock polo or anything like that.

I echo your thoughts on the base level Up. I've got a 60hp Seat Mii as a member of my 'fleet', alongside an Audi A6 Avant, an MG ZT and a Mazda MX5, and I still find the Mii a really fun little car to drive, also surprisingly refined on the motorway once it's wound up to speed. Bought my S1 Sportback for my 50th recently and absolutely love it. All along I’d planned to buy a Mark 7 Fiesta ST but love the refinement of the Audi and the exclusivity so changed my mind at the last minute. Just don’t see them on the road but always see an ST. As great as the Golf R is, the Up makes much more sense to me with my particular requirements in this moment in time. I do miss the speed at times but more often than not, the Up is more than fast enough day to day.

Great vid...but you didn't mention the S1's secret standard equipment...a drive select button with adjustable dampers. Economy mode softens the S1 and makes it less fidgety on the M'way. Auto is a pretty good everyday setting...and then dynamic..which opens up the exhaust valve so that it sounds beefy..although the dampers are a little hard for anything other than smooth roads. I loved driving my wife's S1 so much that I ended up selling my Mecan S and buying an S3..which delivers 90% of the fun of the S1 but is a better m'way car and has way better infotainment (the S1's only weak point IMHO). The S1 is just SO much fun..it reminds me of my old 205gti 1.9 in its big engine small car vibe...but less likely to kill you!!😲😁 The Up gti is a great little starter gti..more 106 rallye in its character..but it's still in short pants compared to the S1! 😉

I can't stand my wifes S1, even in eco mode it's crashy and harsh and the super sports seats have no lower back support, not that your back is ever in contact with the seat as you have to lean forward to see past the B pilar at every junction and to see traffic lights. Plus side, it's quick and looks quite cool.

Tim Burton That's interesting. I loved my wifes S1 so much that I sold my Mecan S and bought an S3..now that does have quite a harsh ride despite the optional adjustable dampers..it's quite a bit firmer sprung than the S1 though. I agree that finding a comfy seating position in an S1 can take time..my wife has the seat back very upright which does kill the lumbar support. You could try pulling the steering wheel out and getting the seat back more reclined.👍

Hi Alex, yes indeed. I did allude to that but I wasn't 100% sure at the time of filming as on some TTs the 4x4 doesn't actually affect the boot floor which has the same luggage capacity as the 2WD version. So I am still not sure if the small capacity is simply due to the fact that you can't drop the boot carpet to the lower position like you can on a normal A1 or if the boot floor is raised - I suspect a combination of both.

Front wheel drive Audi S model would be a bit odd plus quattro means a lot to them but I agree, that would make for a better car especially if it had the VAQ front differential of the Golf GTI Performance / Leon Cupra which is like quattro across the front wheels - the new Polo GTI doesn't get that but they start at £20k so with a potential £28k starting price for the next S1 if it ever happens, just think about what you could do to a Polo GTI with that budget!

Hi Josh, yes clutch is not good but if you are going to change it you may as well fit an uprated version by Sachs and have your 300 hp but it felt plenty fast to me with the 230 PS for a small car. The ride will be fine on 17s - I didn't realise it had adjustable dampers but don't think it would be softer than in the Auto mode in which it was tested when it was just about OK on the 18s in my opinion (and I don't like a hard ride) www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/audi/s1/ride

Ignore the driven wheels, it was more like lift off over steer which you can do on any car regardless of how the wheels are driven. But it still suggests an inherently neutral balance. There were times when accelerating up a wet slip road under full throttle you can feel the back doing something. Don't forget it's got a short wheelbase too so is a little bit less stable that a Golf R, narrower between the wheels (track) too so it generally feels a lot less tied down which is fine by me. These cars come alive now the roads are greasy, I bet your R would surprise you if you pushed the limits - only problem is the limits are higher which makes it harder to tease.

@@volkswizard Really? If I may ask,why so? I've driven the UP! GTI and it's quite fun but IMHO it's a bit overpriced considering the whole package you get. Even the Twingo RS is not a good "bang for the buck". However, I still did not have the chance to drive the S1, but how bad could it be? A well-proven 2.0 litre VAG engine with loads of torque on paper, sounds tempting and fun!

@volkswizard 5 жыл бұрын
Hey ridow300, thanks for commenting. With regards to insurance and maintenance costs, the lower depreciation of a £15k S1 should cover some if not all of this as I think the Up! GTI will lose more money than the S1 as it's a brand new car so the minute you drive it out of the showroom a significant chunk evaporates. Hence my reference to the total cost of ownership which includes depreciation. Obviously insurance costs will depend on age/location/driving history so the difference between S1 and Up! GTI will depend on who's trying to insure it. And you can save money on servicing the S1 by using a specialist as it's out of warranty, while not essential it's probably wise to use a main dealer for the first 3 years with an Up! GTI.

Very roughly in real world use I'd say 30 mpg S1 45 mpg Up! GTI. Up! doesn't like motorways speeds but otherwise will do 50 plus even around town if you keep moving. Have seen over 70 mpg in the summer, 60+ not unusual but think my average with a short urban commute is high 40s. Not bad considering fun factor and no diesel fumes.

Over A/B roads the S1 delivers about 34mpg on average. If you do a lot of town work it will drop to 30 'ish. Compared to my DSG S3 the S1 averages around 3mpg more for the same journey..but the S3's 7th gear gives it about 3mpg better economy on the motorway. The S3 can be caught more off boost than the S1 which always seems 'over-engined' and eager..partly due to the higher final drive.👍🏻

It's a fun car that's cheap to insure, amazing on fuel, easy to park, has a 3 year warranty - I could go on. It's not perfect for everyone but for people who want an interesting daily to keep the miles off a special weekend car it's spot on and for younger drivers looking for an affordable, inspiring car with good build quality (generally) and low monthly payments, it's the perfect primer to the world of performance cars that may eventually lead to ownership of the cars you mention. i couldn't daily an S2000 because it would have been wrapped around a lamp post by now, not sure what an S15 is, Focus RS would have been stolen (no joke), STI Impreza? Very poor mpg and image isn't 'me'. Golf GTI? Newer ones are too nickable round my way and too big too get in my garage easily. Plus I rarely carry more than 1 passenger so all that bulk is pointless, they feel like a big car on tight urban roads or narrow country lanes. Mk6 is narrower but Edition 35 is terrible on fuel, normal GTI is definitely an option though.

Hi Callum? No new S1? I haven't heard that but I haven't really looked. That would be odd as there is an SQ2 coming but maybe a hot SUV makes more sense to the accountants at Audi now even though dynamically they are a bit of an oxymoron (heavy and tall isn't the best basis for a dynamic car but it's just pose value for many). The new A1 has launched with a 200 PS version which sounds like a good start but with no AWD it's not so unique as the old S1. Darn it, I was hoping for a 300 PS + RS1 as well!

Interesting. I guess it all depends how many cars on that platform will be AWD. Maybe they can do an Allroad A1?! And if a Polo R is coming (no idea) that will be AWD. Looking back at when cars like this have been introduced in the last, VW/Audi tended to invest a lot getting the first car (e.g. R32) on sale and testing the water. Then bring it into the range much earlier with the next generation car often losing a lot of the first car's skunkworks appeal along the way but selling lots more now the model is established in the range. It would be a shame but things aren't the same after dieselgate and a lot of e-mobility development work will be taking the place of niche cars like the S1 potentially.

From day one of launch in the UK,it was vastly overpriced ,it's major failing imo of Audi Sales & Marketing £25000, for starters 4 years ago , a very good spec was nearly the price of a Golf R mk7. They really missed a trick here by being far too greedy, volume sales were rubbish. How many of these were actually sold new to customers in UK, probably more sold as demo /pre registered in the UK. I'm feel sure a similar fait will meet the next generation S1 unfortunately.

Thing is Keith, it's no longer about RRP but how much it costs per month and at 4-5 years with over 50% residual at 40k miles that is pretty good going making leasing/PCP costs less. I guess that could be due to their relative rareness, even if it's affordable on a monthly basis it will never be a big seller as it's too small for many people's needs. Part of the of the cost must be due it the development work involved in making the S1 the only PQ25 chassis to have AWD, very unusual for a mass producer like VWG! Limited edition A1 quattro was £41000 and LHD only and technically very similar so £25k must have seemed cheap in comparison when S1 was launched. www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/audi/a1/first-drives/audi-a1-quattro

For £15k there are lots of other choices (Mk7 GTI, Mk6 Golf R, Scirocco R, 8P Audi S3) but it's the compact nature of these cars that appeals to me. New cars, Mk7 Golf in particular are huge and while they are great to drive they are too refined for there own good. I appreciate a 135i is good drivers car but it's no way near as cool as these 2 cars as they are everywhere and they look quite plain from the outside. They are a big car but not hugely big inside, rear legroom and boot is tight for the size of car plus running costs are high as they have a big V6 engine, insurance will be hefty and at £15k they will be getting on so repairs will be likely. Also the rear wheel drive handling might be revered by motoring journalists but can't really be enjoyed on the road but when it snows they are the safest car out there as they don't actually move :)

Warrantywise are absolute cowboys and will wriggle out of most claims - steer well clear of them! Stick with a well-known brand when it comes to warranties; people like the AA are more expensive but at least they’re likely to pay out.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 5 жыл бұрын
I'd love to know what happened as I've heard nothing but good things about them and I spend a lot of money with them. Some dealers will issue policies using Warranty Wise's lowest level of cover and not pay extra for the bits that they should do but that's a dealer issue not a WW one. If the T&C say they cover something there should be no argument but if the dealer issues you an unsuitable policy and says "it covers everything" then that's going to cause dissatisfaction. If you want to email me it's andrew at volkswizard dot co dot uk Thanks 👍
@jayrave4
@jayrave4 5 жыл бұрын
volkswizard the many one star Google reviews will tell you all that you need to know about them! I hear what you’re saying about dealers overstating what WW’s basic level of warranty actually covers, but I’d be interested to know exactly how many claims have been paid out at this level - if any. This to me is just used as an introduction so they can try to upsell you higher levels of cover. Even so, I have spoken to a number of people now with the highest level of warranty that have had expensive claims rejected on the grounds of wear and tear, even with written statements to the contrary from the investigating garage. As you can probably tell, I’ve had my fingers well and truly burned by them, as have many (many) others.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 5 жыл бұрын
Are these policies bought by owners of cars or supplied by dealers when purchased mainly? Without knowing the facts it's hard to make a concrete conclusion but most warranties do not cover wear and tear (though some WW ones do). Another common thing is that dealers sell a car with a know fault and expect the warranty company to fix the problem for them which isn't right. Likewise owners will buy a warranty after their car has developed a fault and try and claim which again is wrong. I'd be very surprised if WW reject a claim that their terms and conditions say will be covered as that's illegal and they could be taken to court? So surely it's just a question of reading the T&Cs and knowing what cover you have got? I'm not sticking up for them for any reason other than I spend my own money on them (£1000s per year) and I've never had any complaints - ultimately if the warranty doesn't cover a repair then it will come back to me legally and so far none have. But as I said I'm prepared to be educated about them but need to know the facts before drawing conclusions as often there are 2 side to every story :)

Apart from a much valued subscriber base on here and social media generally I've gained nothing from promoting the Up! GTI (I don't even think Volkswagen UK appreciate it as I started off by getting a test car 3 weeks before they made them available to the UK motoring press back in January which I don't think went down well). I had a brilliant cross country drive in it yesterday driving back from the Cotswolds in the dark with minimal traffic on some back roads and still got 50 mpg +!
