Newsflash Tim….my next luxury watch purchase might very well be a Breguet! The Marine GMT in rose gold looks unmissable when compared to the Rolex SkyDweller in rose gold…less than half the price but rarer, prettier, cooler and just more!

I bought a mint, full papers and box 3820 Transatlantique in 2017 for $4200. It’s early 2000’s with 100m water, non-tritium lumed(which is what I prefer), almost unworn Breguet alligator strap with deployment. One of the best watch purchases I ever made. Still wear it a few times a month.One of my biggest regrets was not pulling the trigger on the Marine when I could have gotten it for around $7K.

I wish they did more with their marine line. The watches have a great design, recognizable, timeless and they have to me the best rom. numerals. They could make a 38mm case please (other than the feminine targetted variants)

Breguet loves to plate their gold dials and that’s the absolute only thing that I would change. They’re otherwise splendid. I wished Breguet would use unplated yellow gold dials for their yellow gold cases, unplated rose gold dials for their rose gold cases, and white gold dials for their white gold/steel/platinum cases. And of course, on their white metal cases - the availability of a rose gold dial as that’s a striking combination. I love their blued steel dial hardware and matching dial printing, their cold rolled cases, etc. I wished they would bring their bracelets back. That Marine bracelet from the 90’s - there was nothing like it!

I too would like to see the dials in raw gold. That would be spectacular and a bit like the actual 1805 Breguet pocket watch I featured on the show recently. Best, Tim

Hi Tim, I usually consider watches from the 1990’s to 2005 to be NEO-vintage and watches prior to 1990 to be vintage. Watches from the 1930s and earlier to be antique. Neo-vintage pieces are made in the transitional period for brands where they held vintage type vibes and low production numbers and yet has modern production methods. So these categories don’t change relative to what year we are in. It more about the style/genre of watches as opposed to the specific year they were produced. Your thoughts … just semantics or something good to get straightened out ? Best wishes from Singapore
@localheroEd11 ай бұрын
Vintage is literally ‘of a time’ with neo-vintage being the new style of the age and having existed for centuries. For that reason it’s difficult to attribute specific years. However, from a style perspective it would be correct to say 90’s to mid 00’s for watches is our current view of neo-vintage. Just remember that our descendants won’t share that view as time moves on.

You know what I think reduces the Breguet appeal? The design language and aesthetic. It's beautiful (to me), but not versatile and really limits how often (or whom) can where them. I can't imagine a rapper in a lambo wearing one, and nor can I imagine most regular non-celebs. It harks back to a bygone era - even super advanced, horologically incredible modern watches like the 10hz. They need a new line that pushes the boundaries of what a Breguet looks like.

At 30:48 that 3420 jump hour was my first time seeing it, and I found it awful. And this ties in with the barrier to Breguet for me: They seem to be designed to please themselves, not to please me. Who do they speak to, because I can't believe these have universal appeal. I can't connect with any of them. And it saddens me, because some of those movement inventions are so cool. But watches have to please me aesthetically first before they can please me on a cerebral level.

If you buy a watch, with the idea that one day it goes up in value and sell it again. You don't have buying power or enough passion for horology. Just leave the watches alone. Buy a watch you LIKE. And if you find another one you LIKE? Just BUY it AGAIN!.....(unless you plan to make a business out of it.)
