There are already laws. They’re called bait & switch and you absolutely can hold them accountable on an individual basis. Here in Southern California if a brand new Ram 1500 is advertised as $32,000 then out of the door price will be $54,000. $32,000 is the price after all this rebates nobody will ever qualify. So the $42,000 MSRP plus $6,000 hidden fees plus tax and license arrives at 54,000. Run don’t walk out of the dealership.

I took my ex-fiance to a dealership in Sanford, Florida... It was The Ford place anyways I knew what to look for and she did not. So I told her we need to look about two or three cars within pricing range of what she can afford. And she was emailing the dealer, and thought that he was to be all friendly and stuff. And I told her and I warned her, these people are not your friends. They'll pretend to be to get the sale. So we test drove a couple vehicles. She found the one that she liked. We were going to sign the papers and get everything with the financing and they pulled a bait-and-switch on her they have another vehicle that was $2,000 more than what she can afford... And she looked pretty pissed off so I grabbed your hand and we walked right out the door.... When they go to their manager don't say that they have to talk to their manager, and when the manager comes out and he looks pleased with himself, I knew something was not right. So they pulled the bait-and-switch and we walked right out the door. She got herself a Kia a month later.

Actually downpayment is not just for the salesman . It’s meant to help cover licenses and taxes fees . Depending on your county taxes can be up to 10% and licensing dmv fee depends on your state . After that’s covered the downpayments starts going to the car .
@jmarxful

@@jesusgomez9004 it could cover that or lot's of times it's used to get your ltv in range. Dealership's will mark up cars over MSRP or retail add in the tax, title, license and you have a loan that is 150% of value. At that point you need a down payment to get within range or no lender will approve your loan. This also happens when you roll too much negative equity into the new car loan.

I sell regulatory compliance solutions to dealerships for a living. Specifically, Sales, Finance, and Advertising compliance SaaS. I can tell you right now that it’s coming soon… The FTC is in the works of putting an end to these kind of tactics. The law they are working to pass is called the used car rule and dealers are freaking out trying to stop it from happening. Please understand that not ALL dealers are bad and do tactics like this. $33,000 Honda for $542 a month? That is the first red flag. I lease my wife a new car every 3 years. We are on our 3rd Buick Enclave which is a loaded 2021 and the payment is $425 a month. Granted it's a lease. But every 3 years we walk in and turn over the keys and get a new one and the payment is the same or lower. Our last one was $495 a month. I understand a lease is different than a loan. But if you want to drive a new vehicle every 3-4 years, lease is the only way to go. but you must have very good credit. And I'm talking about brand new cars that have an MSRP of $50K or more.

This is so true! I went through this recently. The price you see online is not the price you'll pay, bottom line. Be a smart consumer! Thank you sir

The price they put online should be based on an itemization, and completely inclusive of all of their shenanigans. If you show up and the price is somehow different, they should be charged with fraud.

If you put 2k down, that’s 2k off the price, your down payment always goes towards the price.

Or, just buy a Tesla... and pay precisely what was advertised for the vehicle. Also saved over 90% of maintenance costs, while driving the safest and most reliable car on the planet. My Tesla didn't cost me a penny in maintenance (other than tires and wiper blades) until it was over 8 year old. With this year's maintenance, (replacement and upgrade of center computer & touch-screen, and replacement of read door struts), I've still averaged about $500 per year in maintenance, which is less than most vehicles)... not to mention the savings in fuel costs.

@@billdauterive246 if Tesla is 'garbage', then all other vehicles are super-garbage. I've owned everything from high-end Mercedez, to practical Honda vehicles in the 80s & 90s (when they were still long-lasting quality). By far the most reliable & comfortable car I owned was a 96 Acura Legend.... until I purchased my Model X Telsa over 8 years ago. As much as I liked the comfort of Mercedez, Linconln, & Jag's, I didn't like their high maintenance. For a gas-engine vehicle, the Acura/Honda vehicles of the 80s-90s were by far the most reliable. Although Lexus has slightly better safety ratings. But Tesla blows them all out of the water in safety, reliability, maintenance, performance, acceleration, longevity, etc. Also, it is Tesla that set a new standard in the auto industry, by pioneering safety features that allow vehicles to stay in their own lane (auto-pilot), using clear-aluminum in their glass to create much stronger windshields, and using the battery tray to reinforce the structure of the vehicle, so the car absorbs more of the energy from the crash, instead of the bodies of the passengers or driver. You show me another vehicle where I can get a 1-million mile guarantee on the engine or battery tray, as well as the safety and performance of a Tesla, and I'll buy it tomorrow.

I agree with you. I can't believe they're allowed to list the price without the down payment included. A local used car dealer tried this BS with me. They advertised a certified pre owned for a low price and when I went in there, they told me it doesn't include the down payment and to get it certified would cost another $3k. I laughed and walked out. The salesman was lucky I didn't speak up and let the other customers in the showroom that the dealer is trying to use BS sales tactics.
