Yea after flying it a bit more, I even got a second one to test… it seems normal behavior. Just the quad fighting inputs & wind in an effort to maintain stability. Yeah, I flew with that bad boy for a solid 2 years, cruising through roughly 2500 km (yup, got those stats handy). Towards the end, I ditched connecting it to my phone, so I lost track of my mileage. Still, it's a stellar drone for diving into the FPV world. Now, about the camera - wasn't really feeling it, so I slapped a GoPro on there instead. Biggest bummer? Battery life, hands down. But hey, not deal-breakers by any means. This drone's got loads of upsides too! Wishing your fam happy flying adventures! Catch you later, buddy!@@GiantAntCowboy

It's a big heavy quad with lots of propwash and tune issues but is probably just trying really hard to maintain exact position. It was a terrible purchase to get into the FPV hobby but now looking back I really do appreciate DJI's return to home, would trust flying it to the edge of it's range. I don't think I would ever try to manually land it, even now as a pro, as it's so fragile.
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 7 ай бұрын
Yea, based on more recent flights it seems the wind was just too much for those modes to smoothly correct. I have several proper FPV quads, which fly great and handle crashes with zero issues. This quad I got just for fun, and for non-FPV pilots to practice with, and we’ve been having a great time with it. (Part II coming Friday) However this is not a Camera Drone, and it’s not a Freestyle or Race quad either. Just some hybrid, and I can appreciate it for that purpose. I broke the front arm because I forgot I was in Manual Mode while landing. It touched down and then flipped over before I remembered to “double-click” the disarm button. That little flip over broke the arm loose, I fixed it but what a overly complex repair… lol

Just something to note. Technically the DJI FPV drone is not O3. DJI do actually label it O3 but it’s a generation behind the O3 Airunit and Avata. It’s more O2.5. Or alternatively you call it O3 and the O3 is O3.5. It’s not the same hardware setup. The resolution on the FPV drone did increase to 810p however it’s basically still the same as the Digital FPV system.
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 7 ай бұрын
Hey Ian, thanks for tuning in & clarifying that point. Being my first DJI setup (I know, late to the party…) I’m pretty impressed with the image, and system in general. I’ll have to pick up an O3 setup for another build now I guess. This drone is quite fun, a nice middle ground for non-FPV pilots. My sister-in-law is obsessed with flying it! Haha!

i had the same issue. for me it was the gimbal wires. DJI uses cheap thin stranded wire. you should be able to reproduce the twitchyness by plugging the controller into a PC and checking under game controller settings in windows. when you move the gimbals u should get twitches there too from bad or damaged gimbal wires. you need to take it to a cell phone repair shop and have the wires to the gimbals fixed. i was able to get mine fixed by replacing two of these wires.
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 7 ай бұрын
Interesting, I’ll have to try that, appreciate the tip. Most the time it seems like the whole quad is twitching or rolling hard, not just the camera/gimbal. I’ve been flying it more recently with less wind and it’s much better, manual mode with EIS turned on is very smooth. Looking forward to spending more time with this quad. Thanks for watching and for the tips!

The twitching is due to how the FPV drone operates in normal and sport mode. You are basically flying a camera drone but with a single axis bubble instead of a 3-axis. So yes, the twitching is caused by the wind and the drone leveling itself. If you turn EIS on in the goggles that will help. The key to enjoying the Potato is accepting it for what it is. It’s not a camera drone and it’s not an FPV drone, it’s a hybrid. I have fun flying g it but it’s fragile so not something I fly when I am wanting to push the limits.
@Lostgaming81
@Lostgaming81 7 ай бұрын
Watching again keep in mind the drone wants to keep the camera level in normal and sport mode, so you can get some major shutters/adjustments when slowing down. Especially if rapidly slowing down.
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 7 ай бұрын
Yea man, I think you’re 100% right here. Since filming this video I have activated EIS and it smoothed out things a lot, also the wind has calmed down so the quad is much less twitchy. I’m fly my 7” quad is crazy wind and it barely flinches… so my expectations were admittedly a bit too high. Ultimately I like this DJI FPV drone quite a bit, and my family members have been really excited to experience flying without the stress of normal FPV quads. I’ll share some of these videos soon, pretty neat. Definitely fragile… I landed the other day, forgetting I was in M Mode, by the time I “double clicked” the disarm switch the quad flipped over and broke an arm! Haha, stupid! Thanks watching appreciate your feedback, cheers!
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 7 ай бұрын
@@Lostgaming81 yea, exactly the conclusion I’ve come to. Basically the drone is constantly fighting me to return to level, and then fighting high wind made it overreact and feel crazy! Flew today with no wind and it’s much much better, also M Mode is obviously much better because the quad doesn’t have to argue with me. Haha!

@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 7 ай бұрын
If you can find a good deal I still think a DJI FPV setup is with it, but you have to treat it like a Hybrid Camera Drone/FPV drone. I do notice a little lag when signal gets weak, however I just learned it’s only operating at 25mW. I’m going to do the Drone Hacks mod which should give it 1200mW which would be a huge improvement! We’ve been flying it more, in less windy days, and it does much better. Love that you can just stop, and look around, and it’s been great for my “non-FPV pilot” family members. @Vousie
@Vousie 7 ай бұрын
Looking at the props in view of the frame, the quad is actually bouncing around all over the place, but the gimbal on the drone is stabilising it. The "jerks" are just when it goes past what the gimbal can stabilise. So most likely, I think you were just seeing it being buffeted by the wind, Normal and Sport mode are both GPS-stabilised modes, I think, which means when it gets pushed sideways by the wind, the quad has to roll to counteract it to stay in the same physical spot, so that's probably the reason. I suggest you test it on a really calm day to make sure it flies normally when there's no wind. Also, I see it did not take you long to find out why FPV pilots didn't like this quad... I call it a "glass quad", because pretty much the first crash is gonna do major damage to it.
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy 7 ай бұрын
Yea, did some flights today, beautiful calm sunny day, and it handled much better. The high wind was definitely an issue… I just expected it to handle the wind better I guess. As you said, N/S mode are fighting me and the wind at the same time, which results in crazy over corrections. Glass Drone… exactly. No way this thing should ever be used for freestyle/racing. Literally I was landing, forgot I was in manual mode when I touched down. By the time I realized and “double clicked” the disarm button the quad had flipped over and broke the arm! Haha! Fortunately I was able to repair it. Thanks for watching and sharing thoughts, stay tuned cheers!

@@fyzobaba Appreciate the advice, but i think it’s just normal behavior in Normal or Sport modes; just the quad over-correcting to stop itself & hover. I’ve flown three different DJI FPVs now and they all do the same thing. In Manual mode they fly fine, no twitching, handles more like a standard FPV quad. For reference I’ve been flying FPV quads for 5 years so I’m very familiar with rates, expo, tuning ect. I have a dozen FPV quads, but really like this one for checking out things around the property. Might need some imu calibration. You won't see bitrate with the DJI FPV. N mode will also limit your speed and the lower you go the sensors will slow you down even more. Also, its more like DJI O2.5 - The Avata/o3 is a lot better :) I would recommend land with the goggles off since it will land like a mavic (do not try and land in manual mode). I wonder if your props are fine, might explain the weird twitches(a lot of the twitchness you getting is obstacle avoidance sensors as well) - Remember, the OH Shit button is pretty awesome. Remember, this thing will not fly great compared to other 5 inch's. It's lovingly called the "potato" for a reason. But it does bring some seriously cool features to the table, especially guys coming from a mavic. The O3 system has much beter image quality and better latency. Also, h265 4k is nice.
