I gave Kemper and Quad Cortex a chance for gigging and do not regret it. I love amp and pedals setup but it's just too inconvenient to take to gigs, and hope nothing fails. I held onto my amps and pedals for a few months to make sure the Kemper and Quad Cortex were going to work out. Last week I listed all the pedals on reverb for the prices I had paid for them (I bought them used in excellent condition) and almost all sold within the week. Very excited that people keeps buying gear :)

I have cleaned up on a few purchases in the last year. I found items on reverb that were listed a year or so ago, sent some very low offers, and was pleasantly surprised when they were accepted! On the flip side though, I purchased a Gibson p90 from 1954 about 4 years ago and the value of that hardware seems to have tripled in that time with no sign of coming down yet.

Yeah, there’s definitely something to getting older and wanting to try all the stuff you never could have as a kid. Well, yes and no. I don’t necessarily buy vintage, because sometimes the latest and greatest is actually latest and greatest! I recently got a couple of 40th anniversary Squiers…the Jazzmaster and the Strat. Got them home, gave them a solid setup and they are two of the finest gig guitars I’ve ever had! Anyhew, I could go on for hours, but yes…absolutely, age certainly does push the clock on things.😌

Can you guys explain the advantages of using the Brown Box with modern amps. I thought they were just mainly used for vintage amps. I know they normalize the voltage input.
@tonekilltech Жыл бұрын
It doesn't "normalize" the voltage, if by that you mean hold it at a constant voltage. It would be pretty amazing if it did, but that would require significantly more circuitry and tech to pull off that kind of adaptive voltage regulation. What it does in simple terms is take the incoming power (line voltage) and reduce it by incremental settings 3%, 4%, 6%, 10%. I use one with my vintage amps, and I find that line voltage swings wildly from below 120V (not often) into the upper 120s. Generally at my house, it runs around 124-125V. I'll usually bring it down to 115V and keep an eye on the display to watch for changes and adjust accordingly. Vintage amps can be modified to run better on 120V, but my observation has been that they feel smoother when running around 115V or lower. The other thing to keep in mind is that running an amp that was biased on line voltage (>120V) at 115V is going to change the bias. Ideally, you want to bias the amp at the voltage you plan to run it on. As to your main question about modern amps, it depends. If it's an amp that includes components like channel switching relays or any digital functions at all, effects, power switching adapters, or even digitally controlled internal functions that might not be obvious externally, I would advise against reducing the voltage below 120V. If it's a handwired tube amp in the style of a vintage amp, you can run it on reduced voltage, but again, I'd bias it at the voltage you intend to run it at. It all depends on what you're trying to achieve with it. Classic example, Edward ran his Marshalls on reduced voltage to reduce the volume while keeping them "dimed". There were unintended side effects of that, maybe it was part of his sound (aka the brown sound) but it's hard to say.

Imo the good collector stuff is way to pricey for my blood. I have some rare guitars, but those are the ones I bought back in the 70s, 80s and 90s before they were rare. Now I spend on guitars usually under $1500 bucks, more on under $700 range. A couple hundred on a good set up and they play just as good as $10k guitars. And if I want to get rid of them I either trade them in on another guitar, or give them to a local kid who is learning guitar.

The one saving grace of playing guitar is that there is quite steep barrier to entry insofar as unless a person is a serious talent, they will suck at guitar, not just at the beginning but likely throughout their entire playing "career." The one notable exception to this would be my good friend Darren Householder, who played like a pro pretty much from day one. When I met him at Berklee he had been playing about six months, and already was shredding Nuno and George and doing crazy scales and using tablature and PRACTICING 12-plus hours a day. A very unusual and precocious development schedule. But as I said, he is the exception rather than the rule.
