One thing to add: in this video I reference a 2015 Hellcat with 275 miles that was listed for $50k in Charlotte. As I’m writing this (March 4 18) there is a torred Hellcat in Garner N.C. at Capital Dodge with 300+ miles going for the same price. If you like torred and a back satin hood, get on it!

mikebythesun hey mike, I have a 2015 Sublime hellcat that I ordered new. I haven’t had any supercharger problems. I heard you say they will change the bearings under warranty. Now I’m afraid my bearings will go out after warranty. Are you sure they would change them since I’ve had no problems ? You have great videos I’ve learned a lot, thanks 👍🏽

Do not ever buy from capital in NC. We drove over 5hrs after making a deal over the phone only to have our sales rep. run out the back door and leave with no explanation. They hiked the financing price over 8% on us and gave us a higher price than what we agreed on. I'm pretty sure they sold the vehicle while we was driving to the lot but again ,no explanation was given. Was refused to speak with the manager. Contacted the manager over the phone and by email and never got a response. They lied to us several times and basically told us since we drove so far we would either have to pay their new price or do without. We bought the same vehicle, 1 year newer the next day at another dealership and saved over $7000. To this day have not herd from capital. Great CS LMAO!

I cannot begin to count the number of KZbin vids I have viewed where owners or prospective buyers jump in a turbo or supercharged car and beam as they boast about a "cold start" and mindlessly revel in revving this cold powerplant to produce the juvenile excitement of loud, angry exhaust noise. It does not take a mechanical engineer to appreciate the fact that although oil will circulate to all engine parts within 3-4 seconds and cold viscosity is thinner in multi-grades, the destruction comes from thermal equalization between the differing metals of internal components. A supercharger with an aluminum housing and hardened steel bearing surfaces and drive shafts will expand and contract at vastly different rates during warm up and cool-down. The proven method to insure safe warm up to prolong component life is to start car, let idle with foot off gas pedal for 5-10 seconds, put it in gear and drive moderately keeping RPMs low for 3-5 miles before subjecting the vehicle to high RPM and engine loads.. This is the fastest way to equally warm all internal engine components, thus reducing engine wear and prolonging life of same. If a performance car sits on a dealer lot for more than a few months, it is likely started and revved by hundreds of people, left to idle without ever being driven to equalize temperature. This defines the term "lot-rot" and steals many thousands of miles from the life-span of components. In buying a high performance car from a dealer or private party, always let the owner start the car and drive first. Observe his regimen. If this seller races the motor or subjects the car to high loads from a cold start within 5 miles, walk away at any price unless you are prepared for the expense of failures. It takes a certain personality to own and drive a car with over 400HP and this type of personality is not generally associated with patience and reserve. No amount of service or maintenance can overcome the damage to an automobile caused by careless operation by a bad driver.

Billy Owen Yes indeed. 2016 was by far the biggest year, and its single biggest reason why the prices are dropping. As these come off lease, there will be MANY choices for those of us interested in buying used. Therefore I’m in no rush at all. There is no excuse for presenting any car in that filthy condition. Shop fronts sell, it's as simple as that. Lazy dealership. Walk onto any car lot in New Zealand, especially dealerships that sell cars like the Hellcat ( here they are worth 100k and up ) they will be extremely clean. Inside and out. Even the 'new car smell'. AND selling a car with a very obvious SC issue is plain ignorant. I guess they are hoping either A) someone won't notice or B) someone won't care. Frankly anyone that wants one of these cars, has or should have, done their research and KNOW the bearings on these can be noisy and be a possible issue, like you Mike. Keep searching Mike, the right car will come along :)

Very clean, black paint and no detectable scratches inter very clean, bla, bla, bla. Priced at $47K. So Im interested and ask to take it for a run. Manager comes out and says can't drive it until we have a deal and financing arranged. I'm 66 years old, not a kid looking for a thrill. Manager says sorry that the policy on high performance cars. sachmo omhcas 66 years old and Hellcat shopping... I LOVE IT! Good for you, sir! Since making this video I purchased a Hellcat and it was well worth the effort to get what I wanted at a fair price. As crazy as that “no test drive” experience was for you, it is very common for the hellcats. New ones they typically don’t let you drive at all; used is hit or miss. I managed to do a test drive with a used one (with the red key) and it was only because I had been there before and had a beautiful SRT that I’d be trading in. The sales guy told me that lot of people come in just to drive them with no interest in actually buying, which ruins it for the rest of us legitimate shoppers. In any case, good luck hunting!

JuneBoulevard I hear ya. It was sitting so long that the elements really got to the engine bay. I will say though that the inside of the car was actually really nice - it smelled new, the seats were really crisp and not broken in much at all, the leather on the steering wheel felt brand new. But everything else you saw on the video was as you saw it - unkept and in need of attention. I actually shot this video about 5 weeks ago, up until about 10 days ago the salesman was still reaching out to me periodically about it. given that it sat for 16+ months, I’m sure they paid top dollar for it back when it was traded in and, with the flooring costs, they had a lot $ to make up. Oddly enough, they got a nearly identical car in after i made this video so they had TWO black hellcats with 10k miles sitting there! As it turns out this here is gone. The thing that got me the most though was the customer service. When i got there, I actually walked around the lot for about 20 minutes, then walked inside the dealership and looked at their trackhawk, and then went back outside again, and no salesperson even said hello to me. This is despite this car being right outside a huge plate glass window area where the sales team could clearly see me. I had to go out of my way to get a salesperson to show me the car.

@@mikebythesun just seeing this video now, the reason salespeople don't go up to walk ins is they don't think they will buy anything. The internet has taken over and they only help those that made appointments on the interweb. When I bought my SRT, I found it online but never contacted the dealer. Didn't want them warming it up or try to hide anything. I got to the dealer and like you, was left on my own but I found the car and my sister had to get a salesman to help. Had rusty rotors and was started cold, was able to check the car cold which is the first check anyone should do.

Smart buying man, take your time. Patience is everything with a purchase this large. People get burned everyday because they aren't patient, and there is always another car around the corner, and the cars continue to depreciate the longer you wait to buy. And for a car that expensive if they won't let you test-drive the vehicle even when you say you won't abuse it, then you run! Because they aren't serious about making a sell or they don't want you finding something out. The consumer has the power if he's willing to walk away, and it's better to have that gap room for unexpected repairs.

Some dealerships wait for the right buyers. Sell the problem, then upon 2nd owner return try defuse the situation by repair. What comes next is only a partial warranty coverage so the 2nd buyer pays large. At the same time, the factory is paying 100% coverage. In other words, the dealer gets all the parts free and paid for labour by the factory AND THE CUSTOMER!!! A double slam! (Nobody would be the wiser).

I wish I could show you a 7k mile Hellcat I found on CarGurus, the car had all kinds of performance mods wich immediately lead to believe the owner probably only drove it on road courses or the drag strip to not put miles on it and not lose value. That car must have been pushing at least 800 whp, and the owner probably used every single one of them everytime he drove it😂

Hemi Mike I did hear from the guy a couple of times and actually I could have made another video just about that. I checked back in with him about the car and asked what pricing they were willing to consider and he actually quoted me a an out the door price that was HIGHER than what they offered when I was there. HIs explanation for that made no sense. Then a couple weeks later he reached back to tell me that the asking price of the car had dropped $1k, though that price change had already happened when we spoke on the phone for the first follow up. Unreal, to say the least. Since then, the car has disappeared.

Honest question: That car sounds and looks like it hasnt been started in most of those 16 months. I have heard bearings sounds similar (bearings that are good) when they sit for so long. Is it possible they sounded rough due to sitting so long? I mean the car sat so long the battery died. If they lowered their asking price to 42-45k I would say its still a great deal but I wouldnt be taking it for service to that dealership, they clearly dont understand basic sales and inventory management!!
@mikebythesun
@mikebythesun 6 жыл бұрын
Its a fair question and you may be correct. But the bearing failure issue on the 15s and early 16s is well documented and there are a number of videos on youtube of failed superchargers. I wasn’t about to roll the dice. FCA changed manufacturers to resolve the issue. All that aside, I wasn’t really all that interested in this car (all black, etc), hence my comment at the end of the video when I say even if they meet all my requests I MIGHT consider it.
@rodclark669
@rodclark669 6 жыл бұрын
There is obviously an issue with supercharger bearings. These things spin at a very high rpm and I believe (just my opinion) that there is a design issue and it probably has to do with lubrication

Oh my god I just had this same experience! I have a 2013 Dodge Avenger I'm trying to get out of because even though it is a 4 cylinder sedan that dosn't even make 160 BHP it is classified as a sports car, my insurance is 235 a month! The dealership I purchased it from very shamelessly took advantage of my naivety just to get my check. But all the dealerships I go to now won't work with me to try and trade it in. it books currently at roughly 8,600 dollars value wise without mechanical issues, and I had a dealership have the BALLS to offer me 2,500 dollars for it. Keep in mind this is a HUGE dealership located in the heart of Atlanta Georgia! Then not only did they offend me with that offer, they continuously tried pushing me into a car that is 16-17k to "eat the negative equity". But if I get a total loan of about 20k, then it dosn't matter if the insurance on the Toyota Camry is only going to be 90-130 dollars, THE PAYMENT IS GOING TO BE 350 INSTEAD OF 170!! Dealerships do not care at all and they all try to take advantage of people! I'm glad I learned my mistake quickly and will never purchase a car like this again, but it sucks I have to deal with it now!

The way it works with dealership is complicated but they are not actually selling cars, they are selling a mortgage. Not everyone goes in and drops 90 grand so they finance their new car. look at how much those alleged deals cost you in Interest, fees, balloon payments etc etc . They lose big time if you insist on paying up front. So a car can sit on the lot for months as it isn't costing actual money ,just space which costs X amount in leases each month.

The Hellcat Red Eye is the one to buy. I would get one over the Demon. 797 Hp on pump gas. Demon is 808 Hp on pump gas. You need 110 octane to get the 840 Hp out of the Demon. The Hellcat is a little better driving on the street with the wider stance (hugs the curves a bit better).

That black cat is nice. Sticks are indeed worth less, but... With some $$$, can be made even more durable: better clutch, delete clutch delay valve, better shifter.🤔 I'd pay 40k, after supercharger replaced. My opinion based on owning 3 of these, the first one a stick. With the latest Hellcat releases like RedEye, maybe 38k. That leaves budget for fixes & improvement. (Like the battery🙄)

As a salesman myself you guys think youre so smart doing your "homework" on aged units. You forget how the sales process works my dude. The longer a car sits, the more the price drops. The dealership is already cutting losses. Youre the one asking for too much, not the dealer. Keep in mind that maybe at the time, the dealer mightve been over doing it taking it on trade in. This does not give them wiggle room on the price. No dealer is taking more than a 2k loss on a hellcat. Instead of bitching about how they didnt give you a great deal, you should be grateful they dropped the price at all. I wouldve offered to fix the bearing issue for you before delivery since ur getting ur panties in a bunch bc of that too. Just my 2 cents.

Those bearings get noisy from lack of lubrication. This could very well induce metal fragments in the engine oil. A magnetic drain plug could possibly reveal that. If it were me, I would walk away from that car. The only way I would consider a car like that, is if I were the original owner, and I walked it through the break-in period myself. You know whoever had that car last, most likely ragged on it before they turned it in.
