Good video. 6 years ago I had a Pre Purchase Inspection completed on a high mileage 2006 Maserati GranSport. It had 60,000 miles at that time. The Maserati Tech who completed the inspection told me that cars driven frequently and have a little higher mileage are, in general, more reliable as opposed cars that sit unused for weeks or months at a time. Now my Maserati has well over 100,000 miles and relatively reliable….not as reliable as an Asian car, but about as reliable as a mid 2000,s Mercedes or BMW. In summary, if you have above average mechanical skills and you accept the occasional repair AND if you buy near the bottom of the depreciation curve, an Old Maserati is a great value!

The stupidity of having your "entertainment and navigation" system tied into your vehicle's vitals is just mind blowing. How the hell was this even approved by the NHTA or other alphabet agency. I work in aviation and the airplanes' engines and system STILL work even if the navigation systems are offline or removed, and entertainment is rarely tied into anything more than the main electrical system for power.

It always astounds me how absolutely stupid car manufacturers can be. There is NO reason thatthis car in particular can't be as reliable and cheap to maintain as say a Lexus ls460. How? HIRE A TOYOTA/Lexus engineer! And source ALL the ancillary parts (window motors, a/c sytems, etc.) From manufacturers that make QUALITY CHEAP UNITS. Why should a window motor/regulator cost 1, 500 dollars? Especially if it's failed after only 20, 000 miles? This car could STILL be sold for stupid money, the brand would skyrocket in approval ratings, AND tge bottom line would be raised by at least 40 percent. Can you imagine having a car that looks like this that is capable of 400 to 500, 000 miles and a yearly maintenance cost of 800 to 1, 500 dollars?

@@sjm5482 as someone who has worked in the automotive industry at the “designing new vehicles” part of the business, I can absolutely guarantee this is the case. 1. Designers create an initial design based on a set of criteria (which can include packaging, reuse of components, as well as aesthetic and market considerations, etc) 2. Engineers figure out how to make the design into a working vehicle. 3. Accountants, “project management” (those who agree the impossible deadlines) and legal teams throw in more and more limitations or new requirements that compromise both engineering and design until deadline arrives. 4. The history of Maserati is long and varied, with a number of owners including FIAT and Ferrari, so the engineering is most certainly Ferrari derived. In fact, the Maserati factory was modernised when it was put under full ownership by Ferrari in 1999, even though Ferrari had owned a 50% stake since 1997. In 2005 Ferrari sold a large percentage back to FIAT and FIAT set about reorganising both Maserati and Alfa Romeo into a “group” using Ferrari engineers to help in developing cars for both brands, which now included Abarth, and setting up their R&D departments. FCA sold their stake in Ferrari in 2014, but many Ferrari engineers remain in the FCA group and work on both Alfa and Maserati models. To say this isn’t a bargain Ferrari when the Ferrari California uses nearly the same underpinnings is not correct. Compared to the price of a Ferrari, these are bargains. Unfortunately, unless you get a 2018 or 2019, you have very old school tech in the car and the radio unit is dreadfully antiquated. Then again, for the sound you get and the beautiful Italian leather and Ferrari engineering, it’s still a bargain if you like to drive something different. They are great to drive.

I also agree with you, that on certain cars, you can peak at the issue, but if you don't have access to the tools, developing a relationship with your dealership instead of making things worst is the way to go. All new cars including cheap and simple Mustangs run all their systems using CAN BUS....I was dealing with a dead head unit after my battery voltage went extremely low and I learn how your OBD / PCM / TCM /AC / Radio / Amplifiers / SRS (air bags) / etc, etc are all on Hi speed or LOW speed CAN and every single module has a software code specific to your VIN. So with some nice Internet software you can flash and over write software and check communication. I assume Maserati has something similar to have all their systems communicating, I think it's standard to most cars. Now, is there any generic software out there than mortals can download to work on Maserati and do your own troubleshooting? I bet there is!! I heard that AUCAR unit is the best way to avoid messing with any communication in these cars.

I’ve had my GranSport since 2006…like any car, if you maintain and drive them you shouldn’t have any problems….deferred maintenance is also another reason. Drive the car, maintain it and find a good independent mechanic and you should be fine. The problem is is that these cars are super cheap to get because of maintenance…then, they end up in the hands of people who can afford to buy it but can’t afford to maintain it. I’ll take my normally aspirated 420 horsepower (after exhaust mods) any day over the new generation of V6 turbo cars. New cars today are boring and dull.1

Brake job was $6K?? What type of brakes? I just did 4 pads, machined all 4 rotors, and flushed the fluid on my 360 Modena for a hair over $1200. If I'd replaced the rotors, that'd be another $4K for the rotors. That's still under $6K though.

Threes things, the car looks much better without a sunroof, nothing beats a conventional auto box and yes, $1500 well spent at the dealership for exactly the reasons you stated, win win, you got the results without incurring any damage to your Masa as a consequence. I hope your wife gets lots of pleasure out of owning it.

interesting that you just didnt find a can bus module for that radio you have in the dash now. I just installed a apple carplay/android auto touchscreen unit for the hvac and infotainment that came with a can bus communicator. works great.

It's very stupid that any other system goes through the *stereo.* But other than that it seems a very lovable car. No proper stick shift reduces the appeal, I suppose, but if the automatic paddles do what they should, OK. (I think for that genre I might look into an F-type Jag with the stick and nice-sounding V6, so pretty, but that's pretty too. :) (I'd prefer saddle-brown inside to red, but it looks a lot nicer than all those black and dark grey ones I see. That hides those lines.)

This is an automotive channel with 150K subs +. Nice size channel. You're clearly an expert. So I don't get how a laymen like me knew immediately that you just can't swap the radio out of that car without removing a significant portion of its brain at the same time. Maintain the Maserati battery , if it's 65,75,85 percent good you should connect a battery maintainer often so your car and electronics don't give you dashboard lights and it's got lots of lights.

$1500.00? Ouch! But I do get it. When you get into cars at this price point you have to be prepared to pay a lot for repair parts and the shop rates of highly qualified technicians that are familiar with them. The sheer level of needless complexity they seem to build into them is mind blowing. It's not like someone really good with their own cars can't fix anything. But with the specialized tools you need for some jobs? Plus practically needing to be an electronics engineer to figure out what a warning light on the dash really means on these rolling gas burning computers. All that being said I really do love the wife's car. I could see myself being very happy if I was to own one like it. Can't wait to see what new wheels you picked out and hear the exhaust after the upgrade!

Nice car. I hope your wife enjoys it. One thing however, Maserati is not the luxury brand of Ferrari. Maserati and Ferrari developed the V8 engine together and Ferrari built the engine for Maserati. The rest of the car was developed and built by Maserati in their own plant. Maserati and Ferrari were always two separate car companies.
