there's an error in this video regarding the compilation of the quran, and unfortunately its a very widespread common misconception uthman wasn't the first to compile the quran, it was actually abu bakr, who reigned for 2 years after the prophet passed away. after a battle with apostates, a sizable number of muslim memorizers who had the quran memorized died in the battles, which worried umar ibn al khattab, and he asked abu bakr to compile the quran. after much convincing, he accepted to do so abu bakr had the quran compiled at his time, and the quran was kept at his house during the reign of uthman, the muslim empire had already held a huge amount of land, and people generally had the quran passed around and memorized orally. issues arose when people on the fringes of the empire started arguing and debating on what the actual verses were, and so uthman got some scribes to make several copies of the quran, and sent a copy to the main districts of the empire, so that people in those regions, if they differ, they can go check the true version. and even after that for the most part people memorized it orally(and the extra copies were pretty much backups in case anyone messes up) thats also when uthman ordered the destruction of all other written copies, because the actual true one was already compiled by abu bakr decades before uthman's reign, at most 2 years after the prophet's death(im not sure exactly during which point during abu bakr's reign the quran was compiled, but he reigned for 2 years so its not more than that) so no, the quran wasnt written down in a whole book form 20 years after the prophets' death, but at most 2 years. and so theres a saying that goes "abu bakr gathered the quran, while uthman gathered the people on the quran", its still a pretty wide misconception even among muslims.

The Quran, at least in its early part is quoting much of the bible and especially Musa about 73 or maybe 74 times. It suggests to the Bani Israel to go back into their land in the name of Alla, and not leave. The Children of Israel are sometimes referred to as Ummat Al Kittab and there is nothing wrong with that. I wonder if in the name of peace we could stick to the good parts and put aside the less peaceful parts. Those who believe in the Hebrew Bible did it and nobody is claiming that an eye for and eye is justice. I think that some of the less peaceful parts in the Quran may have come from traditional and tribal times preceding or after the life if the Nebi.

Even if it's heavily influenced by Syriac literature or whatever that is, the question is became: How Muhammad can be able to recite it all back in Arabic while Arabic, Syriac and Aramaic is far too different to be able to bridged by a man who know nothing about Aramaic or Syriac? As we know that Arab's tradition of preserving events by oral and those kinda literature must be held by some people with high status like rabbi yet Muhammad family doesn't have such status, therefore probability of obtaining such text is slim, if not impossible. To be able to create a book (or oral tradition which later canonized) from other language to Arabic is just like asking some random shepherd from Mongolia to come up with a book like Art of War by Sun Tzu by hearing its content here and there in the original language.

The fact that his direct followers preserved the book by memory makes it a not-so-far fetched feat. Besides, the obvious differences between the Syriac and the Arabic story may then account for the paucity of information recounted from memory, plus its additions

Mind you, unifying nomaden Arabs and Mongols is hard, it is even harder using literature as the unifying aspect.

@@alfred2018 I don't think that the stories were that esoteric. While I can't speak with any degree of certainty (and neither could anyone else), it is entirely possible that Bible stories were common in the region he lived in. Moreso, the fact that Jews and Christians are referred to as the people of the book shows that he is aware of some book. And while the book wasn't as common as it is now, the stories were also taught and a lot of people memorised it like they do the Qur'an. It says that it took 23 years to receive all the relations. So I don't think it would be hard for anyone to memorize anything if they had 23 years. it contains just perhapses that's not knowledge that's an opinion and to be frank he cited some incorrect things like the Quran was not written in life time of the Prophet Muhammed that's not right because the compagnions of the Prophet did write it in his time and one of the very famous historical figure that did it was the first ommeyad Calife muawiyah ibn abi soufyan and it was compiled in one book called al Musehaf and the Book used by Uthman to standardize the Musehafs across the state was that of the wife of the Prophet Muhammed called Hafsa bint Umar ibn al khattab so he does not know that and for the Book being based on Syriac and as an Arabic speaker that is mostly a Bull shit, Syriac and Arabic belong to the same family tree everybody who tried to do this manoeuvre indeed tried to distort the meanings of resembling words that have different meanings in the two language and that is a deliberate corruption based on fallacies, for the Sanaa manuscript I don't know his position exactely but it has a very known story for a later time to tell but he is assuming that inconsistencies existed in the text that 's also a declaration made to out-proportion the dialectal differences in Quraysh tribe's ( the Prophet's Tribe) language that used to exist in the way of recitation, these differences are very minor and don't distort anything neither in the text nor in the meaning and the most important of that they are very known and classified and very very few dialectal differences , this Book is very well preserved because everybody in that time learned it by heart directly from a chain of well known people traced to the prophet so for the language beeing without vowel that's a void and wrong argument because the Book at that time was taught verbaly and no one was allowed to teach it or to recitate it in prayer without learning it verbaly from someone who also learned it verbaly from another till the chain ends up to the prophet, the one who learn it just from the mushaf was called a musehafi and it was a kind of pejorative description.

A minor correction at 20:25 : The Arabic language does indeed have vowels (all human languages have vowels), but rather it is the traditional Arabic script that typically or mostly does not express them in written form. Several other writing systems historically expressing other Afro-Asiatic languages, such as ancient Egyptian and Hebrew, also have this feature.

Come on! Arabic vowels are central to the language and writing. The first letter of the Arabic Alphabet is Alef, which is a vowel! The letter Wao is our O, and it looks like the English comma, also means AND. It is part of the decimal system and punctuation of European languages - an Arabic vowel!!! A third vowel is Yaa, which sounds like i and e and y depending on the word. The Arabic language is based on 3 or 4 letter root verbs, and these roots often contain one or two vowels. If you trace the origin of the vowel-less legend about Arabic you will find an idiot or an orientalist, which is the same thing often. 😢

Yet I would have guessed that you, with your fantastic knowledge and experience would have been an atheist, an anti-theist (as I am), or at at most a pantheist or a deist - how come a theist? Sorry if it's a personal question, but it just doesn't seem to square! For all of those who think it is ideal if Muslim women are not financially dependent on men: Would it be ideal if Muslim men were not sexually dependent on their women? For example, would it be ideal if men could purchase (at low cost) harems of docile life-like forever-young sex robots? How would you respond to Muslim men who justified this by saying such robots are necessary to give men true independence, such that they are not forced to stay in relationships with women who are rude, jealous, controlling, manipulative, fat, old, or ugly? How would you respond to Muslim men who said that Muslim women need to "step up their game" such that men choose to be with them instead of a robot that is more friendly, beautiful, young, and thin? The cop out answer is to say sex robots are haram, but there are other conceivable halal alternatives that would do the same thing: flood men with cheap alternatives. Obviously, such alternatives would weaken and ultimately destroy marriage because it takes away the dependence that men have on women for sex. But that is literally what giving women financial independence does; it makes them independent from men. And that's why no society or religion ever did give women that independence, except for our current dystopia.

Hi! I just saw my first video of your series and found it very instructive. A - maybe silly - idea came to my mind: would there be a way to show, to tell a history of atheism as far as it is known? The background of my question ist: if there's something to alter nation state perspective on history, then it's the history of belief, isn't it? Umberto Eco wrote: in what believes a non believer? If we - ideally - knew that we are all schooled without really knowing what 'school' is, we ('we?') would become aware of our responsibility before whatever we know as devine. What do you think about it? Thanks for the video.

Perhaps this misunderstanding is caused by the people who had come up with the idea that the person mentioned in the holy Quran is to be taken as the one who lived for 200 years or 2 centuries. this idea does not make any sense, because it would employ that the person was of 200 years of age and he had already lived for 2 centuries at the time period during that story. again because you do not give a 30 years old person a name like ["thou al qarnayn" means "the one who lived for two centuries" ]

@@zitools okay so the thing is, the spread of islam was pretty fast. A major contributing factor to this quick spread was the fact that islam was offering equality to every human being, which if you go a 1000 year back, was a big deal. especially in places such as Indian subcontinent, which was plagued by a cruel caste system, in which privileged upper castes (which were a minority) ruled over lower castes, that lived their lives in very destitute conditions. When this population was introduced to islam, they were quick to accept it, as it was offering them an escape from the derogatory system they were used to off. Since the time of our Prophet, it has always been the poor who have been in the forefront to accept islam. The wealthy class obviously resists it, as it is beneficiary of the status quo. While this enables islam to gain huge numbers, the down side is that majority of them are poor and uneducated. Now, partially due to how world works, and partially because of our failure, we havnt been able to lift everyone out of this illiteracy, and impoverishment. Which means we have a sizable population among us with very little understanding of their own faith. Financial security causes frustration, which is vented out in the form of intolerance. So yeah, I would say about 50-60% of muslims wont be open enough to take the question in point academically. they tend to be more sentimental about these things. But i guess, this would be the same for any group of human beings.

I will answer some points , the last point mentioned by Luxembourg, Qura'an mentions that was revealed in Arabic to challenge Arabs whom are best known for a language can't be learned by other than Arabs and a challenge to their poetry which they took pride in. The mentioned stories goingback to the Bible are a challenge for people of the Book (jews and Nazarens (Christians now)) specially jews and a call for them to accept the new revelation which affirms the revelation they had from their prophets but with new jurisprudence , Qura'an even dictates what happened in the days of the prophet peace be upon. Qura'an also mentions stories unrelated to bible as Salih and Hud peace be upon them and tells the jews caliming the copying of their texts where those stories came from if that is true. Add to that if your claim are true , the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him is quite a man : illiterate yet learned armaic , assyrian greek and hebrew , learned the Bible, apocryphal texts, Talmud (which is recently wrote down) and knew about greek legends. Affirming that God revealed Quraan is easier than affirming that a man with those circumstances where people wage war over a camel came up with this new book after learning 7 new languages and thousands of books. There was no Arabic Bible and as such we find that there’s barely a place in the Qur’an capable of accurately describing what Christians actually believe. I cannot think of one, but there are many places in which the Qur’an makes errors in describing Christian belief. Furthermore, in other places, the Qur’an repeats the false folklore tales of the Syriac Christians, such as Dhul Qarnayn / Alexander as if it were real history. But we know these stories are not true and where they come from. It is clear that the author of the Qur’an was not too familiar with Christianity. This is actually a sign of it being all too human, I’m afraid.

The earliest Quranic manuscript that has been reliably dated by scholars is known as the "Birmingham Quran manuscript." It is a collection of Quranic text fragments on parchment that were discovered in 2015 at the University of Birmingham in England. The manuscript has been carbon-dated to between AD 568 and 645, which is within the time period of the Prophet Muhammad and the early Islamic community. I like the way the history is being explored here. But as a muslim, I must make some notes. The Quran and its verses were preserved because it is one of the promises and statements of Allah. So if Angel Gabreil revealed the verses from Allah to Prophet Mohammed, there was no need for him to come across the biblical/torah stories from elsewhere where. Another pretty strong evidence of the Quran being divine, are the various scientific processes that were only discovered recently by scientists.

So it’s preserved because it says it is? Just curious, so why did god fail to preserve the earlier revelations? Seems odd. When someone claims that he was visited by an angel would you believe him, or note that those stories he’s relating were in circulation in oral and written form among the community he lived in? Which would be more probable? No, none of the so called scientific processes in the Quran are new ideas when it was written. As above, they were in circulation in the 6th century CE, or are so vaguely described that the claim is overstated.

There are three main stages of the preservation of the Holy Quran. 1. In the life of the Prophet Muhammad 2. In the life of the first Caliph, Abu Bakr 3. In the life of the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan The Arabic word Caliph comes from the Arabic word khalifa "خليفة", meaning "successor" or "next in line." Abu Baker was the first leader of Muslims after the Prophet Muhammad's death and Uthman Ibn Affan was the third leader of Muslims. 🔸 In the life of the Prophet Muhammad Allah granted the Prophet Muhammad the power to memorize the verses He revealed to him. Immediately, the Prophet under his supervision gathered his scribes and orally dictated the verses he just received to them to be written on whatever writing material that was available at that time. Since the Prophet Muhammad was illiterate, he directed his scribes to read back to him what they wrote to avoid writing other than what he received from God. Afterward, the Prophet Muhammad recited what he memorized to the Muslims around him. Muslims instantly memorized what the Prophet recited to them and started reading what they memorized in their five daily prayers. The Quran at the time of the prophet was preserved in two places: 1- The written pages. 2- The heart of Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad also directed his scribes where to place the verses in the growing body of the text. Allah promised to protect the Quran from being changed or lost: Allah says in the Quran 15:9 (Interpretation of the meaning) "Indeed We have sent down the Quran, and indeed We will preserve it." During the Prophet Muhammad's life, thousands of Muslims memorized the entire Quran, and after his death, the number of Muslims who memorized the Quran kept increasing until we find today millions of Muslims of different nationalities and ages who know the Quran by heart. And many of them do not speak or understand Arabic. ❓❓WHAT DOES THIS MEAN❓❓ It means that if we were to destroy all the copies of the Quran books that exist on earth, Muslims in a different part of the world would be capable of rewriting the Quran exactly as it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, from their memory, word by word and all the written Quran all around the world will match word by word and page by page. It further means that if anybody tries to add, change, or delete any word or verse in the Quran, Muslims will easily discover it and reject it. 🔸 In the life of the first Caliph of Muslims, Abu Bakr Abu Bakr, the first leader of Muslims after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, realized the importance of collecting all the written pages of the Quran into one book. He formed a committee and assigned two known companions who memorized the Quran to supervise the compilation of the Quran. To make sure nothing was written by mistake, they double-checked each written verse with the memories of each member of the committee. Finally, the first compiled copy was placed with the Prophet Muhammad's wife Hafsa, daughter of Omar ibn al Khattab. 🔸 In the life of the third Caliph of Muslims, Uthman ibn Affan One of the questions that many Islam attackers ask Muslims in an effort to disqualify the Quran we have today being the Word of God is: Why did the third leader of Muslims, Uthman, burn all copies of the Quran and keep only one copy during his reign? And point to Quran 15:9 where Allah says He will protect the revealed Quran verses from being changed or lost. They do not bother to learn because they want only to attack Islam. Please pay attention to what I will write to be able to give a satisfying good answer. When the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad there were different Arabic spoken dialects in the area. The Prophet Muhammad's spoken dialect was his tribe's Quraish dialect. Do different Arabic dialects mean different Quran meanings? Different Arabic dialect does not mean different meanings for the same spoken Arabic word, it means different pronunciation and is slightly differently written while the meaning stays the same regardless of what Arabic dialect different Arabic tribes speak. After the Prophet Muhammad's death, the whole Quran was memorized by hundreds of thousands of Muslims and nobody was reported complaining about other people reading the Quran using different dialects. By the time of the third leader of Muslims, Uthman ibn Affan, the Muslim population had spread over vast areas outside the Arabic Peninsula where there were many people of other cultures and languages. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamaan, the companion of Prophet Muhammad, warned Uthman bin Affan about the future dilemma of having the Quran written in different dialects. Uthman bin Affan acknowledged the dilemma of Muslims starting to fight about in which dialect the Quran should be recited. Uthman ordered the collection of all the written copies of the Quran. He burned all of them and preserved only the Prophet Muhammad's Quraish tribe dialect copy of the Quran. Afterward, he assigned scribes to write many copies of the Prophet Muhammad's Quraish tribe dialect copy of the Quran and redistribute it to all tribes. With Allah’s help and guidance to Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamaan and Uthman bin Affan, the Quran we have today, wherever you go, is the same original Arabic Quran that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in the Quraysh dialect. 🤔Think about it: Why did history not record any rejection from any tribe for burning its copy of the Quran? Nobody rejected, it because It did not make any difference for any of them since the Quran verses give the same meaning no matter in what dialect it is written or recited. Muslims always had ONE CONSISTENT Quran, which is still written in Arabic the original revelation language of revelation.

The other books mentioned as sources of the Quran from a secular perspective, are there any manuscripts for them that indicate exactly when they were written? Also, there is a lot of scientific information that was not mentioned in any book before the Quran, such as the development of the fetus and the rotation of all parts of the universe. What does the secular perspective say about them?

Interesting you should mention embryology in the Quran. It’s almost the exact same as Ancient Greek beliefs on the subject, written before Muhammad was born. You’ll find that nothing in the Quran is unique, you just aren’t aware that these ideas were already in existence prior to the Quran being written.

The secular perspective is that there is no scientific information in the Qur'an. The development of the fetus was copied from the Greeks (also copied its error), and astronomy was repeat of six century knowledge (including geocentricism and flat earth). It is Muslim apologetics who reinterpret old verses to fit the new Science which is common for all religion.

Yes he forgot to mention that, bt rather skipped to when the standardization was completed under Uthman. Umar made the suggestion to Abubakar, who began the process but the process was completed under Uthman! This is a vital point that shouldn't be ignored. He also made a baseless argument that their wasn't any written manuscripts of the Quran during the Prophets lifetime when infact several of his companions had such copies but were discouraged to wait till the revelations were finished so they do not mix Quran with Hadith! He never made any statement that several Companions memorized the Quran wic was why it wasn't tainted, and the concept of memorization is what makes it the most untainted religious book in history!

@@cramax4871 Yes those factors can influence once memorization ONLY if that person stops reciting it daily to keep it their memory. Good thing the Quran exists in written texts that can easily read! For a person who memorized a musical lyrics and sings publicly, a slight mistake like change of a word could be easily recognized by any random fan who knows such song, not because he reads The lyrics everyday but constantly listen and mym it. Say what you want the Quran is not like the Bible that needs to be reedited by random fellows for selfish reasons everytime they need to print new copies. People minds are different when it comes to memorization that's exactly why not every Muslim has the entire Quran memorized but most Muslims always have a copy they read and indeed the 5 daily prayers is also a factor that keeps such memory fresh.

Well Quran was written during the life of Prophet Muhammad PBUH during his life, however it was on individual pages, Caliph Uthman unified it in the form of a book. You can still find several such pieces today. 2nd thing is than the different versions of Quran were different in dialects like waladwaleen vs walazwaleen vs waladaaleen. No version was different in text.

his whole claim is retarded and shows that he is ignorant in the three books (quran ,torah,bible) here is why : 1)there was no single Arabic translation of the Bible till the tenth century CE, i.e., three centuries after the Prophet’s death. The available texts of the Bible were either in Syrian, Greek, or Hebrew. If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) could have any direct access to the Jewish or Christian scriptures, he would have quoted them, being in dire need to challenge his opponents. 2) The Prophet peace be upon him was illiterate, does not read or write, and it has not been proven that he saw the Torah and the Gospel, or read in them, or transmitted from them. 3)let us examine the two texts, the Qur’an and the Bible. The Qur’an was revealed over 23 years in installments to match multitudes of events, issues, and queries, which were finally compiled into surahs, each having a homogeneous flowing narration. On the other hand, the Bible is a collection of 58 (plus 16 disputed) books written by several human authors and groups. These books were originally not intended to be holy scriptures, but were selectively made so by the ecumenical councils of the Church, several centuries after Christ. An academic or even casual hand-on examination by an impartial sound intellect could never fail to witness the deep contrast between the superb text and context of the Qur’an, compared to the fallible human texts comprising the Bible books. 4) If this were true, his enemies from the polytheists would have taken it as a pretext for them, with the aim of defaming it. 5) Further, the Qur’an has vehemently unveiled the Christian and Jewish distortions of the original messages of Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them). The original Injeel and Torah are no longer available. Please read, for example, the Qur’anic correction and reply to the Biblical distortions: - Abraham was a Jew: 2:140; 3:65 - Allah tired from act of creation? Allah forbid: 50:38 - Jesus the son of God? Allah forbid: 9:30; 5:17 - Trinity: 5:72-73 - Sanctifying the Church: 3:64 - Solomon blaspheming: 2:102 - The first Qiblah: 3:96 Could a copy (i.e., the Qur’an, according to the allegation) correct the claimed original (i.e., Bible)? 5)What happened from the agreement in some of the rulings does not indicate that the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, was taken from them, and he learned from them, but because Judaism and Christianity have their correct origins that are consistent with the principles of Islam, had it not been for the distortion, change and alteration that they experienced. 7)The rulings of Islamic Sharia were descended gradually according to incidents and facts, and the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, depended in ruling on some matters until revelation came down to him, which indicates that he had no prior knowledge, and he did not ask the People of the Book. 8)The Noble Qur’an exposed the Jews and Christians, exposed their veils, and slandered them allah says in quran '' O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His apostles. Say not "Trinity" : desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah. Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs." (4:171) 9)Again, could the Qur’an learn from the Bible? There are, of course, points of agreement between the Qur’an and the Bible, e.g., the main aspects of the stories of prophets. That is natural as far as the original source of information being the same, divine revelation of Allah through His Messengers teaching essentially the same message. But here again, in the stories of the prophets we witness the profound differences between the Qur’anic narrations and those of the Bible. Compare for example: the story of prophet Joseph in the Qur’an (12:4-102) and the Bible (Genesis 37-45). Here, the brief to-the-point yet lively objective Qur’anic narration to emphasize advice and exhortations can be contrasted to the marginal details listed in the lengthy once-upon-a-time style of the Bible. While the Qur’an gives due respect and reverence to the prophets as Allah’s chosen inviolable human beings, radiating His guidance to their contemporaries and future generations, the Bible frequently portrays them dishonorably. Consider for example: Genesis 9:20-24: Noah being drunk and appearing naked in front of his sons Exodus 32:3-4: Aaron shaping a golden calf for the Israelites to worship 1 Kings 11:9-10: Solomon worshiping false gods 2 Samuel 11:4-5: David committing adultery Genesis 19:31-36: Lot committing incest with his two daughters

Some things important if you want to extend this topic, you have to search on how quran could provided many prophetic verse, provided scientific signs accurately and solved many problems in modern society.

Length may appear to be the pattern on arranging the chapters, but that's not totally accurate as some shorter chapters are placed ahead of longer ones. There're different says on how it was arranged, the most popular one says it was based on how the prophet read them (i.e. when he recites the full book).

No! It means it was written by Mohammed et al! Who wrote the Quran - Mohammed, his wife Khadijah, Omar and Khadijah’s cousin Waraqa ibn Nawfal (‘a clever Christian’). What sources did they use, everything that had gone before! But unable to erase ‘religious history’ they plagiarised and then modified it suit their own agenda! During his lifetime people knew he was rewriting myths, tales and other peoples religions. The Quran mentions these critics of Muhammad; for example Quran 25:4-6 says the critics complained that Muhammad was passing off what others were telling him as revelations. (I can give at least three occasions where Omar admits to feeding Mohammed ideas which were then incorporated into the Quran). Those who disbelieve say, "This is nothing but a lie that he made up, and others have helped him at it (Khadija & Omar). Tales of the ancients; he wrote them down; they are dictated to him morning and evening." * If he ‘wrote them down’ then even the traditional ‘fact’ that he was illiterate is a lie! The scholars indicated that this text had been subjected to *distortion, and that it was subject to always for long and short additions* (1) Even the scholar *Becker* described it as an *“open text”* because it is an expandable commentary (2) , and that it *"appears to have been revised in a belated way in the Middle Ages."* (3) And it was stated in the *"Encyclopaedia Judaica 7/449”*: *"There are several parts in Genesis Rabbah whose style, language and exegetical character do not represent an integral part of the original midrash, but rather they are late additions"* The story of “Ibrahim” with idols and fire appears in chapter 38 of the Midrash, *it is among the chapters that scholars have said that it has been subject to distortion and belated revision.* And although it resembles the Qur’anic story, it is noted here: *The Midrash story contrasts with the Qur’anic story in detail in many ways.* * This midrash has been subjected to *severe change*, and Orientalists and evangelists do not have an argument for the *authenticity* of this story in this midrash or for the proof that it existed in it before *the time of the Prophet Muhammad,* noting that the oldest manuscript of this midrash in our hands today: (Vat. 30) dates back to 400-500 years after the appearance of Islam!!(4) Also, the text published today in the original language, which was prepared by Theodor and Albeck (1929 AD), does not match any ancient manuscript due to the many differences between them! *#################################################* 15:29 *(Mary And the Palm Tree)* You said, *"a very similar story is told about Mary and the palm tree"* and claimed that there is only *one difference* between the two stories. But the truth is that there are at least 6 differences between the two stories *(in the place, time, characters of the story, what miracle happened, what caused it and who did it)* 15:40 You said, *"Pseudo-Matthew was written around the same time as Muhammad lived"* But many scholars such as *(Robert Miller, Lynette R. Muir, J.K. Elliott, and J. A Tasioulas)* say that it was written in the eighth or ninth century, i.e. *after the advent of Islam.* (5) 15:58 You said, *"its more likely is that this was simply a well known story that was floating around at the time and that both authors were familiar with it"* But the scholar *(G. K. Eliot)* explicitly stated that the *Pseudo-Matthew was not known in the East* Stephen J. Shoemaker said, *"It appears that the apocryphal gospel of Matthew was written somewhat late, which prevents it from having an impact on the Qur'anic text, and most importantly, this apocryphal gospel was composed in the beginning in Latin somewhere in the Christian West and was completely unknown in the Christian East"* (6) *#################################################* 16:12 *(SLEEPERS IN THE CAVE)* As for the story of (The Seven Sleepers), it is a historical event mentioned by the Qur’an in order to take a lesson from it, and the Qur’an never claimed that there is no other book that preceded this story!! . And your saying that it is a well-known story to other nations, this supports the fact that this story occurred because it has historical testimonies! *#################################################* 16:12 *(DUHL-QARNAYN)* You did not mention any book before the Qur’an that narrates the story of Dhul-Qarnayn, but you most likely mean the book of Alexander Romance, especially the Syriac version of it, which some orientalists claim to be a source of the Qur’an, but the truth is those Syriac versions of Alexander the Great were written after the advent of Islam under the Islamic rule. Ernest Wallis Budge says in his book (The life and exploits of Alexander the Great: being a series of translations of the Ethiopic histories of Alexander by the Pseudo-Callisthenes and other writers, with introduction, etc) about the *Syrianc versions of Alexander Romance were inspired by the Arabic culture and were written under the rule of Islam* This means those Syrianc versions were written and inspired by the Arabic culture, *not quoting from the Greek ones* He also said it was written by a *Syrianc Christian person who lived in the Islamic countries under the rule of the Abbasid Caliphate during the 10th century AD* B. M. Wheeler says, *"A more discerning examination of the different texts show that the later recensions of the Alexander stories are dependent upon the Qur'an as understood through the medium of early Muslim commentators. Key elements of the later stories, such as the appellation of "Dhu al-Qarnayn" attributed to Alexander owe their origins to the commentaries"* (7) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1- The Jewish Encyclopedia, 3l64 2- Chaim Milikowsky, ‘On the Formation and Transmission of Bereshit Rabba and the Yerushalmi: Questions of Redaction, Text-Criticism and Literary Relationships,’ in The Jewish Quarterly Review, New Series, Vol. 92, No. 3/4 (Jan. - Apr., 2002), p.526 3- Scott B. I'm Muslim and I must say after watching the entire video that it is very informative and very insightful and most of it actually doesn't challenge the divinity of the Quran. Knowing that Muhammad was a trader before he settled with a well known tradeswoman and his first wife, Khadijah, he met all sort of people that made him question the paganism in Mecca, it was God's will that he meets those people, the ancient Christians and Jews and doesn't settle for worshiping the idols. There is one hadith where Muhammad tells us to debate Christians and Jews and they'll teach us a lot about our own faith and he is right, here I am learning more about my faith from a Jewish man, thank you so much. Also even the Syriac thing is very plausible, remember, the Quran standrised Arabic, and if that standardized Arabic was influenced by ancient Syriac Christians then that fills me with joy as well because I'm Lebanese, my ancestors were probably those people, and therefore we are the same people as ancient Arabs we didn't just adopt their culture, we merged.

From an academic point of view, I would conclude that you intentionally injected some fallacies into your rhetoric. For example, Muslims assert that the current versions of the Bible contain fabrications, thus making them not a different text from the Enjil (Evangel), Tawrat (Torah), and Zabur (Parts of the Old Testament). There are no original books that were conceived and then shown as a new mutilated version. Instead, the books were compiled many decades, or sometimes centuries, by different schools of either Judaism or Christianity, leading to the emergence of different versions. The Islamic Quran did not undergo this versioning issue. However, opposing to what you mentioned, the Quran was compiled not 20 years but only 2 years after the death of Muhammad. All other versions were destroyed when a total standarizing of the book took place after 20 years of the prophets death ( The standarisation included a standard sorting of the "Surahs" and standard orthograph). Unfortunately, this argument reflects some of your biased colors. The Quran was compiled with the existence and agreement of the people who lived with Muhammad, many thousands of them. The versions that you noted are not variations of the Quran, but rather scripts with orthographic errors that lead to different reading issues and no contextual changes, I say it again No contextual changes (as proven by the oldest pre-unified version of the Quran called the Birmingham Codex of the Quran). Comparing this to the versioning of the Bible, which is a historic account of the life of Jesus, the Bible has different versions in terms of words, meanings, and even the number of books. This is evident even if we only consider the canonical books standardized by the Romans at the Council of Nicaea as the most correct. Yet, the majority of scholars agree that a "Q" source is missing to justify some compilation differences. This Q source could be considered the closest version to the true Evangel, if we can put it this way, or perhaps the farthest. The book you referred, The Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Koran is too problematic from its German (?) author to methodology from examples to thesis. I’ll take a simple review from Wikipedia: Francois de Blois has postulated that Luxenberg is not German, rather a Lebanese Christian. He believes that the individual is a dilettante whose Syro-Aramaic reading "does not actually make better sense" than the standard classical Arabic reading. He notes that the theory is not novel, rather Luxenberg seems to adapt earlier works by James A. Bellamy and Günter Lüling without citing them in his bibliography, which "poses questions about [his] scholarly integrity." He posits that Luxenberg has an articulate knowledge of dialectal Arabic, passable (though flawed) command of classical Arabic, and a basic (though "very shaky") command of Syriac. He ultimately concludes that German academics have no reason to hide their identity; “It is necessary, in conclusion, to say a little about the authorship, or rather the non authorship, the pseudonymity of this book. An article published in the New York Times on 2nd March 2002 (and subsequently broadly disseminated in the internet) referred to this book as the work of 'Christoph Luxenberg, a scholar of ancient Semitic languages in Germany'. It is, I think, sufficiently clear from this review that the person in question is not 'a scholar of ancient Semitic languages'. He is someone who evidently speaks some Arabic dialect, has a passable, but not flawless command of classical Arabic, knows enough Syriac so as to be able to consult a dictionary, but is innocent of any real understanding of the methodology of comparative Semitic linguistics. His book is not a work of scholarship but of dilettantism [amateur].[19]” You were expected to be more scientific!

How come that Muhammad was not sucessfull with his message in Arabia? The pagans didn't buy his early teachings leaning to a non-trinitarian christian creed with Jesus as a messiah figure. And he could not sell this story to the jewish tribes around Medina later, who could clearly see that he got lots of jewish tradition wrong (i.e. like David and Solomon titled as "prophets" when they were kings for the jews.).

There are some misrepresentations in this. Most Muslims believe the Quran was written down in the time of the Prophet. The Prophet encouraged this and had dedicated scribes. This collection of writings were gathered together during the reign of Abu Bakr, immediately after the Prophet's death. Importantly, there were several spoken forms of the Quran, somewhat like how different dialects pronounce the same words differently - this was approved and accepted in the time of the Prophet. In the time of Uthman, as the Muslim community expanded massively, there were fears that different spoken forms would lead to conflict, so 6 skilled Quran scholars were appointed to compile a definitive "version" of the Quran. This group used the Quraishi dialect and interviewed all available companions in Medina who memorised parts of the Quran to compile a robust version. This version was cross checked with the Abu Bakr version. Thus, there were no material differences in the Quran, there were just oral differences that were aligned under Uthman. This is a key difference in understanding between Muslim scholars and Orientalists.

Yet he argues that there isn't any evidence to back it up 😂 which clearly is ironic lol! Muslims do believe they received such revelations wic became tainted over time. But no Muslim argues that he/she has the untainted version lol! So there is this super intelligent, all knowing, omnipresent God with a very important message for humanity which answers all their problems and will give them salavation. So what does he do? He chooses to appear to someone In a desert, a warlord and who also happens to be illiterate and reveals the message to him in private. He then goes out and recites it others. Some memorise it (coz they can't write too), and some who can write, note it down. After 20 years of his death, his followers compile it into a book from their memory through oral recitation and some from written texts, while destroying other variants before coming up with a final version. My question, is this the best way for a super intelligent God to reveal his message to each and every human on this earth? Is the system of revelation based on oral recitation not flawed? How do we trust the authenticity of the message or the revelation, as it cannot be independently verified as it's 1 man’s word against the rest of the world? So there are 2 possibilities. Either this God does not exists, or has a very poor understanding of logic and reasoning and standards of evidence as to what should convince a person to believe in him. Personal revelations via a third party have to be the worst possible way if God wants to convince the entire world of his presence.

_"It was interesting to see the stories found in earlier sources because the Qur’an describes itself as a confirmation of revelations that came before."_ Correct, however, you need to consider the nature of those texts: they definitely are not "revelations" in many cases, as they are human commentary on the Jewish scriptures. It seems the compilers of the Quran didn't know the difference. You also have to consider whether the Qurans "correction" claim makes sense in light of the actual texts. What we actually find in many cases is the Quran copies random details that don't make a lot of sense by themselves, but make perfect sense in the original story.

Have you ever heard of the Pali Canon? If not, I have to disappoint you. The entirety of the early Buddhust scriptures were memorized orally for some centuries before being written down to preserve them from being lost due to political turmoil. Even after being written down, the oral memorization continues to this day among certain groups of Theravadins. During the sixth Buddhist council in the 20th century, when official versions of the Pali text were decided on to be transcribed into the Singhalese, Thai and Burmese national scripts, elder monks who memorized the Pali Canon were an essential part when deciding on the details of the doctrine. The closest disciple of the Buddha, his cousin Ananda, is attributed to have had an exquisitely trained memory, to the point where he could pretty much dictate the entire life of the Buddha 3 months after the Buddha's total extinguishment (Parinirvana).

I was waiting for this episode; great and informative series overall as a Muslim, I have two corrections to make: 1- the Quran isn't ordered by length as you mentioned. in fact, the second-longest Surah, by the number of words, is the 4th Surah, whereas the second-longest Surah, by the number of Ayat, is the 26th Surah. You can also see that the shortest Surah is the 104th Surah as opposed to being the final Surah. so simply saying that it's ordered by length is a huge misstatement. 2- while the Quran was indeed standardized during the reign of the third Caliph Uthman, standardization is a completely different process than compiling the written book itself. most religious scholars date the first compilation of the book to the first Caliph Abu Bakr who died only 2 years after the Prophet's death. also, as you mentioned, Uthman ordered all variant copies to be destroyed which simply shows that in fact there were multiple written copies of the Quran by that time. in fact, most religious scholars believe that Uthman used these written books to issue his standardized version of the Quran.

I can't wait for your "who wrote the book of Mormon " video to come out!!!! Just minutes before you mentioned it, I was already thinking of leaving a comment requesting just that lol A little back story; I was raised Mormon, but wanted to learn about other religions when I was 18. I knew very little about Islam and Muhammad at that point, except what my father had told me...which was they believed in father Abraham because all Arabs were desendents of Ishmael. I was never told their faith had anything to do with Jesus. So when I started learning on my own, not only was I shocked about the belief of jesus as a great prophet, but also about the story of Muhammad and the Quran. It was a case of deja'vu lol... the story was eerily similar to the story I had heard all my life of Joseph Smith and the book of Mormon. I have my theories these days, but I'll keep them to myself (spoiler alert, I don't think Muhammad copied Joseph Smith) I'll be fascinated at any other similarities you find, either to Islam or other texts/sources. If you would like any information about the book of Mormon or the church and what it teaches, I'd be more than happy to answer any questions. Wonderful video and content!!!

great video, but I have a question, if the case for the Quran to be a product of it's time and stories that were floating around, yet the Quran it challenges people to get a verse like any verse in the Quran, not to mention that there is still to this day a debate about who is the two horned guy ( meaning that the guy was not known). another point to make about the Arabic language is, Arabs to this day take pride in the fluency of their speech and poetry not to mention that Mecca was the meeting place for poetry battles (Arabs are really crazy about their language) so it being based on syrieac is debatable.
@kyoungd
@kyoungd 4 ай бұрын
What do you mean by a "verse like it"? What qualifies as a "verse like it"? If Muslims can define the challenge, we can create a verse like it. Your last point about Syriac origin is probably right. It is a fringe theory.

@@kyoungd so the verse in quastion was this "And if your are In doubt concerning what we have sent down to our servant, then bring a surah like it, and invoke your helpers besides Allah, if your are truthful". the quran had three challenges, bring a book like the quran(they couldn't), then bring 10 surahs ( they couldn't), then bring a surah( like the verse above says-they couldn't) . a surah is at least 3 verses, you have to bring 3 verses like it acourding to the Arabic language (quranic arabic) with the right grammar ,Pithiness, Eloquence and Phrasemaking. arabs like I said are crazy about the Arabic language, and if an illiterate arab like Mohammad can come up with the quran, then surly another more poetic arab can, or even a group of people can come up with it, being like what's said in the video a product of it's time. (sorry for confusing a verse with a surah- it's only 3 verses at least 😅)
@kyoungd
@kyoungd 4 ай бұрын
@@farhanaljarrah9310 Let me clarify my question. Who decides if a verse has the "right grammar, Pithiness, Eloquence and Phrasemaking" and what criteria do they use? What you described is all subjective and that is the problem of this challenge. If I say, create a verse like "Stan Lee" of Marvel comics, it would be the same question. If someone worships Stan Lee as the greatest comic book creator of all time, they will always find something to disagree with. Qur'an is not magical. There are non-believing Qur'anic experts who disagrees with the divine nature or the best eloquence narrative. Even back in prophet Muhammad's time, there were those who did not think it was the best among the Arab poetry. This narrative was developed and adopted centuries later.
@farhanaljarrah9310

@@kyoungd the best linguists among Arabs or non arabs if they are good, you only need to be good at arabic to know those criteria , even a real bedouin would do as a judge. and here i would ask you do you know arabic? it would be much easier this way. the quran came in a form which was not used by the arabs in there literature, to say that stan lee came up with his own thing is not true, you have many competitors, batman and joker alone can top any one of stan lee's creation. noble prize candidate taha hussain couldn't do much, he only said that the peotry before te quran was not true, but that was his limit. let's say that I agree with you that the quran is not magical( which is not btw, it's divine) who are the people who came up with a book like the quran, many did during the life of Muhammad and after, to this day they still pop up, and who are those non-beliveing experts and where is there version of the quran? I'm really asking, I'm not thick headed about these things. people at the time of Muhammad before madina told him we will make you our king and will make you rich and you will marry the best looking girl in Arabia if you stop, sounds like a defeat to me. and again I say if it's not the best eloquence or it's the best poetry etc.. where is the thing that tops it?

Secondly, it was widely believed by scholar of Quran that Dhul Qarnain was Cyrus the great, not Alexender. The description in Quran matches more to Cyrus then Alexender. Correction: The first compilation of the Quran into a single book occurred after the Prophet's death, within a period of less than two years during the time of Abu Bakr. Most of it was written down during the time of the Prophet, and the rest was preserved by many of the companions. During the time of Uthman, five copies of the Quran were written and distributed to five cities in the Islamic world following its expansion. Additionally, from the time of the Prophet until today, the primary source of the Quran is its memorization by Muslims, not the written book. There are millions of Muslims who memorize it now, just as it has been throughout history.

There are 40 scribal errors between the four books distributed to each city. It is amazing that they made so few errors copying by hand. It was a remarkable accomplishment. Modern day Qur'an has about 2,000-word difference from the earliest known copies which accounts for about 3% of the Qur'an. That too is an incredible dedication.

Fearing that it might become lost or corrupted, Umar requested that Abu Bakr authorise the compilation and preservation of the scriptures in written format. The caliph was initially hesitant, being quoted as saying, "how can we do that which the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless and keep him, did not himself do?" He eventually relented, however, and appointed Zayd ibn Thabit, who had previously served as one of the scribes of Muhammad, for the task of gathering the scattered verses. The fragments were recovered from every quarter, including from the ribs of palm branches, scraps of leather, stone tablets and "from the hearts of men". The collected work was transcribed onto sheets and verified through comparison with Quran memorisers.[80][81] The finished codex, termed the Mus'haf, was presented to Abu Bakr, who prior to his death, bequeathed it to his successor Umar.[82] Upon Umar's own death, the Mus'haf was left to his daughter Hafsa, who had been one of the wives of Muhammad. It was this volume, borrowed from Hafsa, which formed the basis of Uthman's legendary prototype, which became the definitive text of the Quran. All later editions are derived from this original
