Thank you for doing this. As a MacDonald, I am ALWAYS pleased to see us get ANY recognition that is not centered on the Golden Arches. A couple of points - Member of the Clan refer to it as Clan Donald. Most Scottish Clans use the whole family name (e.g Clam MacMillan,) Clan Donald is different . The family name is MacDonald (McDonald, Donnelly, Connolly, etc, etc) but the Clan name is Donald. Godfrey's title may be Baron, but in this context, he is known as Lord MacDonald, Chief of the Name and Arms of Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald. He is referred to as High Chief because there are four other Chiefs within Clan Donald: Macdonald of Sleat Captain and Chief of Clanranald Chief of Glengarry Chief of Antrim

My great great grandmother was one Johanna Mary MacDonald (born in Scotland but not known where exactly) who likely entered America through Castle Garden when they immigrated to the United States in 1864, lived in New York for a time before marrying my Norwegian great great grandfather, and then moved to San Francisco. My aunt had a friend who was a genealogist who did an amazing amount of research for her. However the only clue left before he died (he was really old when he did this book) was to include the family name history of the Clan MacDonald and the battle of Glencoe. I have been doing ancestry research since 2012 so this will be exciting to trace and see where she connects.

There’s an argument to be made that the Glencoe Massacre shouldn’t be included in the feud between the Campbells & MacDonalds- because it was orchestrated by the Lowland Dalrymple clan, & the government- a Campbell actually gave the fleeing MacDonalds shelter, but the former were able to use the old antipathy toward the Campbells to direct attention away from them... guess it worked, because that’s the perception we have after all this time- hell, it even worked at the time. I'm related to the Ennis family in Ireland through Sir John Ennis in Athlone from the 1700s.I don't know if the family lineage goes back to the MacInnis family of Scotland but would love to find out.

@@macbrns1438 That's awesome! Do you know anything about the lineage. I would love to know! We could be distant cousins lol!!

I was born with the last name Annas. It was changed from Ennis through the centuries from Ennis here in the states.

Heather Byerly yeah I know a bit. I actually watched this video to see if we got a mention but we didn’t. Somerled who is mentioned in the video was quite an important ally of our family though.

@@macbrns1438 Thanks for the information! There's so much that I want to find out about our family. I feel like there isn't enough taught here in the states about the Scots-Irish History. It's only told in families here in mountains of North Carolina if they know.

Can you cover clan Boyd? Because there’s a family legend that we’re related to them and when I researched it I got to the near 1800’s but then records vanished

Macdonald is a common last name but what about Smith? Also I'm curious about what happened to the MacDougall and Macrory lines :-)
@dukadarodear21764 жыл бұрын
Smith (name) = Gabhann. (Irish) Gabha Dubh = Blacksmith. Usual name version; "MacGabhainn" /Son of the Smith. Anglicised as MacGowan etc. Scotch Gaelic may be slightly different.
