The Glencoe massacre (and the MacDonald/Campbell feud) was referenced in the show "Mad Men". Pete Campbell tries to get his daughter into a private school where the headmaster is a MacDonald. The headmaster politely refuses to accept her, and when pressed to give his reasons, he starts raving about how Campbells aren't to be trusted. Funnily enough, Glencoe itself isn't mentioned by name, but both men, Americans in the 1960s, know exactly what issue is being discussed. Pete's wife, meanwhile, stares on in bewilderment as she has no idea what's going on.

I am Australian descended from clan MacDonald, of Australian-born parents. Three anecdotes illustrate the bad blood. 1. In 1960, my father worked in northern Nigeria, and met a MacGregor. "Oh and there's another Scot in town" said my father "Jock Campbell". MacGregor's look soured and he said suspiciously "They fought against us in the '45." That's SEVENTEEN-forty-five. 2. In 1980 I lived next door to a Campbell and visited him in hospital. "You know you're not a bad bloke" he said, "for a MacDonald." 3. In 1987 I visited Scotland and near Glencoe the sign on the pub door read: "No dogs or Campbells".

I have watched most of your videos and this is one on your best. I also admire your valiant attempts at Scots Gaelic pronunciation. I was a bit disappointed that you did not bring in the Dutch flag and national anthem upon the mention of William of Orange (only joking). A possible area for you to do another video is on the Norse-Gaels (from whom the McDonalds descended). They were the people who evolved into many Scottish clans and took control of many areas of Scotland. The Norse-Gaels also (in terms of DNA at least) also settled the Faroe Islands and Iceland. Could it be argued that the fact that the Icelanders, uniquely in Scandinavia, produced a vast literary record of their culture because of their Gaelic literary heritage?

The way I see it, is that despite what happened in the past, the MacDonalds and the Campbells have to forgive each other and end their feuds. They are not their ancestors. Both clans have good, kind and generous people. As I always say, Love, forgiveness, compassion, friendship and trust always win the day. They stop us from completely destroying ourselves. What the Campbells did back then at Glencoe and other places were wrong, but it's only by Forgiving that we set ourselves free. They are both great clans. My maiden names Campbell, I had a good friend who was a MacDonald. Though we both knew our history it was history. We never once hated one another, his family was like a second family. Both our families traveled from Scotland to America and as far as he and I were concerned that was then, this is now. God bless!

I have a friend (haven't seen him in years) who is a Campbell, while I'm a McConnell (MacDonald). We were very close, but one New Years eve on the outskirts of Belfast we got into an argument. We decided to climb a nearby hill and fight, which we did. We were both very drunk and fought shirtless, and my friend Campbell had his cheek cut, a week before his wedding. We turned up his flat shirtless, muddied and cut, and made the excuse we were jumped because we were both terrified of his girl's wrath! Anyway, as a McConnell/MacDonald, this was payback for an ancient betrayal (I won), or so I tell myself. Easier that than admitting we were both idiots : )

Make no mistake, these were British troops at Glencoe. Some Campbells were among them, but they were a tiny minority (and I'm happy you mentioned this) among the various other names of lowlanders and even highlanders. It's interesting to note that the first Jacobite rebellion split the Campbells deeply, and even by the second one, many Campbells fought as Jacobites, albeit as individuals without the backings of chiefs.

I remember hearing that the MacDonalds of Glencoe did swear loyalty, but a day late for the deadline. And the soldiers said they were going after another nearby clan, which is why the Macdonald's trusted them. If this true, why did you leave this out?

There were late taxes involved also. Not the only clan who were late paying but an example was made. Scotland History Tours has a video that goes into more specifics of Glencoe. Some of the clan my surname is a sept of was also among other clans with the Campbells. I hope none were my ancestors. There are other videos with different details. One said a woman was stripped and sent into the snow to die a day later of exposure. Evil reigned that night. Many say 70 were killed.
@dotWayton Жыл бұрын
Further Context: The clan Cheif of Macdonald at the time left for a fort which happened to not have a magistrate so he was unable to sware fealty to the recent new King, from they had to travel further south to another fort which cause the delay past the deadline. They were made an example of all though numerous clans were late aswell.

I was at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games one year, and there were many of us gathered around the fire having a good time, when a young man came up and joined us. Someone asked him about his tartan, and when he said "Campbell", everybody went dead quiet. After an awkward few seconds that felt like hours, he turned and walked away.

" William of orange re-established protestant security in Britain" That's a nice way to say that 8 guys invited some foreign monarch into Britain to overthrow the king simply because he was a Catholic, and then wage brutal wars in Ireland and Scotland to secure control, and switch sides in a foreign conflict in mainland Europe. And the Episcopalian nobility in Southern England just went along with this.

Good video which achieves its main dual purpose to be entertaining and interesting. Even the idiosyncratic graphics work strangely well. However, if there is a second edition, you might want to correct a few errors: Somerled was around in the C12, not the C10; Dòmhnall Mac Raghnuill was around in the C13, not the C10, and the Battle of the Boyne took place in 1690, not 1692.
