This video looks at the User Input Routing that was finally implemented in the Behringer X32 and Midas M32 digital mixing platform. You have to have at least V4 firmware on the console to use this feature. User Input Routing removed the blocks of 8 limitation to soft-patching on these consoles. Anything can be patched anywhere, as long as you follow some basic rules/techniques. A lot of videos over-complicate this (IMO) by adding unnecessary information or tentacles to the process. Once you know the basics, much of the material they are adding and discussing is then easy to figure out. But until you know the basic process and the technique that is engineered into the system, the extra stuff just confuses the ability to grasp the basics. Hopefully, this video makes the basic process easier to understand, simplifies it, in order to allow users to do more advanced things (if need be) as situations present themselves. How about User Output? To show how to set up the mixer for total User Input & Output operation would be greatly appreciated. By the way, your videos are the absolute best! Super clear, without confusing non-essentials.

Thanks for suggestion! I try and focus on the 'why' in my videos as much or more than the 'how' because once a user understands the why they can more clearly grasp how to do other things that go beyond the video's initial focus. Or automatically understand other videos talking about further concepts on the same general idea. As you said the "non-essentials" can just confuse things sometimes. If I was to do a further video on some workflow ideas for user input routing, it would just 'click' for a viewer that understands the basics of it without confusing them. Or a video like this gives them a reference point to come back to and review. At least I hope it works that. ;)

@@AlanHamiltonAudio I agree. I would like to see a video on User Output - there seems to be multiple places for setting outputs, but inputs seem relatively simple...

That's a clear explanation and real-world example of user routing. I appreciate you taught that just one user block needs set up using User option instead of all 1-32. The AES50 can easily handle the rest of the blocks.

Informative. Straight to the point. Follow along instructions. Well done, sir! Thank you.

Just what I needed to know! I am about to add a wired talk-back mic direct to the console (X32/S32 setup). I know it would have taken me a while if I did not see this video. Thanks!

Wouldn't it be easier to just select user routing 1-32 from the start? That is how I set up the board. And then the user in 1-32 for the card.

I think for some users it definitely could be. That was one of the things I had in mind when I mentioned once users know the basics they could extrapolate other more elaborate setups. I think one problem I've seen with videos trying to explain things like user input routing is they get into the weeds trying to explain how and why making a default user input scheme might be a beneficial workflow, but then muddies the foundation of understanding how it's working in the first place. Or they complain about the channels being 'off' in user routing in the first place. But while they're doing that, viewers are still trying to grasp the overall concept and the video is talking details a few steps beyond that. I think some videos can get into the 'how' you do something, and then ignore or skim over the 'why', which I wanted to explore the 'why' you do things in the user routing setup menu so that viewers could then figure out further steps on their own. Or would intuitively understand ideas like creating a default soft-patch in user input routing when they see them suggested. Something to get the gears turning. It might be a good idea, now that I have this video in the library, to have a followup talking about things like having a default user input routing patch in the console and utilizing that as your normal input routing and making changes in just that one place (user input routing) when you do need to make a change versus the extra step(s) it is now.

@@AlanHamiltonAudio Thanks Alan for the reply. That is how I do it, I just have to make the change from local to AES50 in only one place.

On x32 edit, you can have a user screen and move channels where you want. Is there any way to have x32 mirror this?
