Tiger shot 65-69-71-67 for a 272 for the week. If you took the best score from the field for each round they would've went 66-70-68-69 for a 273. Think about that for a second, if the other 150+ best golfers in the world used the best score any of them came up with for a given round they still would have lost to Tiger. That is mind boggling!

The chart shown at 07:20 says it all. Tiger finished at 12-under. Tiger had already been lighting it up a few years, but it took this US Open to make the golfing world realize he is the best that golf has ever seen.

32:06 Retief Goosen was basically a nobody at this point, at least on the PGA tour. He had relative success on the European tour. I remember seeing this shot as a kid and becoming a Goosen fan after that. I'm pretty sure he had the very first tee time on Saturday and ended up tied for 12th! Sure enough, the following year he won the 2001 US Open. Then followed that up with another title in 2004, and was consistently one of the top 10-20 golfers in the world for most of the 2000s.

The US Open on NBC had more of a special feel to it compared to coverage these days for whatever reason.
@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 4 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Kato not only was NBC better and Johnny Mr. US Open Miller the perfect face, but the tourney itself better as its gone wandering and completely lost its identity as the supreme test of driving accuracy in the game, instead the USGA sets up the courses easy while throwing mindless gimmicks at the players (tilted tee boxes, changing pars, making holes drivable, shaving down banks, etc), also constantly injecting itself into the competition in various ways. The Fox broadcast isn’t bad (except for that first year, before they hired all the ABC people), but feels much more mundane and like a normal event as opposed to the pageantry NBC presented the tournament with.

people ask me who was better ? jack or tiger? I dont say anything and just show them this tournament. Yes, Jack has 18 majors and 19 runner ups..and Tiger is still better. Tiger dominated a sport that is statistically so much harder to dominate than tennis, basketball, football, pretty much every other sport, because the variables are so huge. id say peak Tiger was by far the most dominant sportsperson the world has ever seen. Love to hear other opinions....

Who counts losses? That’s sad that old white men - in order to have a great white hope have to stoop to going so low as to count a man’s losses in order to try to better a man’s record to try to beat a clear prodigy. This does not help Jack and is pretty shameful. Jack is the greatest major winner - by three. Tiger is the greatest player in all sports much less the greatest in golf.

If you notice, a lot of these professionals change the way they grip a putter! So many varieties of grips and lengths of putters! As far as I know, Tiger has always used the same grip and length of putter thru out his career! I think he changed putters at one time but other than that the same! I always thought that was impressive in itself!
@TheLocalLt
@TheLocalLt 4 жыл бұрын
Blessed4ever yep he changed his main putter after his first masters win in 1997, and then experimented with some new putters in both 2010 and 2018 while trying to find his stroke. But I believe he won the 2019 masters with the same putter he won his 1999-2008 majors with.

"Might be noted that this golf course, especially with two windy days, is an awful lot tougher than Baltusrol ever thought of being." See, this is why I don't know why they bother with 'Lowest Score to Par' metric in majors. They play on a different course every year and conditions and course set-up are always different as well. The only major where that metric makes any significant sense is at the Masters because at least it's the same golf course every year.

He also used prototype golf ball made by guys at Bridgestone although it said Nike on the ball! Better in the Wind and Longer than his competitors ones they played! They got the idea for the ball from mark O’Meara the one he played 1998 and won Masters and The open and tied 4th PGA , they researched it to get it as close as possible to mark ball without breaking patents! They even flew to Germany for Tiger to hit latest update on it close to the open!
