I have a 4 blade victa mulch and catch and I am so happy I took the other two blades off and just used two blades that are left. I noticed a big change in the way it cut the grass. I find that it makes a cleaner cut and scoops up all the lawn clippings whereas the 4 blades sort of rip the grass and they leave some lawn clippings even on an empty catcher. My mower is designed to have 4 blades but I’m just keeping the two. It sounds much better as well. I’ve been looking for a video about this for a while now and I’m glad I found this one 👍🏻

I have a 23 year-oldish Rover 'Scott Bonnar' Green Keeper. It has been used with 2 blades since purchased. I decided a month ago to put 4 swing back blades on as it had another 2 holes for it. To my surprise the cut quality was way better/cleaner in terms of finish. Smoother and level. Seems quieter/different pitch with a lot more suction. Big benefit as thick grass use to block the big open rear catcher entry. Also 4 blades kept cutting denser grass even when the RPM plummeted under thick dense grass. 2 blades would stall every time under thick dense grass but would resist initial RPM drop underload more. My guess is the extra high lift and 2x cutting frequency is mulching the grass much finer reducing the load on engine despite the increase in contact patch with the lawn. Regardless which option you go with. Keeping the blades sharp make a heck of a difference.

My experience is that quad blades are much better at cutting thicker/ longer grass.

I could never notice a difference in results. I took off the two worst blades on my four blade Victa over a decade ago. I haven't run four on it since. I do like the whirring sound it makes with a four stroke, not so much a two stroke, which is why I recently fitted two extra blades on my Briggs SupaSwift, which I had been running with two and it cut just as well. A professional mowing contractor said he noticed the clippings get cut finer with four but I think two is absolutely fine (excuse pun).

I’ve always wondered if I should get a quad cut holder for my Viking mower. It’s getting old but I always keep it serviced and recently gave the old girl a birthday with a new fuel tank, belt and full carby clean. Glad I didn’t get a 4 blade system now after your vid. I catch 90% of the time anyway. Would you be able to test which setup fits more in the catcher? That’s why I was thinking about changing. Also 4 blades probably last twice as long as 2. So wouldn’t be such a cost offset.

Whistol Mowing, what I mean is. Well what I have observed is that with dull blades my catcher will fill quickly with poorly cut grass blades that are longer, where as with fresh sharp blades the grass is cut quite fine and the catcher fits more and is noticeable heavier once full. I was thinking that the 4 blades might cut it a bit finer again and fit more in the catcher.

Not that its a major issue, cause we should all wear hearing protection when we mow, but the two blades are also marginally quieter. Did that on my AL6000 Masport 21" quad blade with the bag, and it went from standing behind a 747 at takeoff loud, to standing behind a 737 at takeoff, from a greater distance, ohh, and as everyone else says, less dust. Why the heck dont Masport design a new catcher thats 55 - 60 lts? Surely R&D for the little 44lt one has been recouped by now!? Hows that 850ic engine holding up under commercial use?? Mine has been excellent, but its only a couple of residential lawns.

How do you find swing back blades like on a Honda ground job compared to a fixed blade masport? I always had a great job with swing back on a Honda...my masport seems to be not quite as good.

I guess the only thing with a two blade system is that you may need to replace the blades more regularly. Especially if the blades wear out at the tips such that the overall diameter of the cutting sweep is reduced.

What about fuel consumption? Is the 4 blades fuel consumer lesser than 2blades ??

This doesn't surprise me. I have been using Victa 2 strokes that are between 30 and 40 plus years old, and they are all 2 blades. No difference in cut between them and a new Supaswift 4 blade commercial. On another note, there is a noticeable difference between 2 and 4 blade usage on dry, dusty lawns...if you don't like being hit with a mega dust storm, stick to 2 blades.

RPM should increase with only two blades giving higher suction and cleaner cut. But I guess the downside is the two blade should wear quicker than having four

Everytime I turn over my mover, oil floods the carburetor and filter. 19 dollars for 2 blades for a victa at bunnings. Rip off
