That was terrific. The melody part is what's going to keep me moving forward!

The way to have third or sixths double stops under your fingers is to do as Andrew suggests and practice them. You’ll learn to recognize them in other people’s solos, and will start to see how they can be added to your own playing. The first step, however, is to practice thirds and sixths in all the scales you generally play in.

Excellent lesson Andrew, I am going to use this as a lesson for my one student this evening. Very simple but a good example of the harmonized scale. Many thanks, Jim H.

Can you post up a video with double stops in every key? I am having a hard time trying how to do them in all keys. So will you show us how? Thanks

Andrew i just wanted to say that you are a wonderful teacher and very knowledgeable. i remember having questions about pitch axis theory, and i found one of your videos on it! You've helped me a lot in the past year, thank you for being someone i can go to when i couldn't afford to have lessons.

No, it starts at 0:0. He explains that the concept is called - double stop. Knowing that, a beginner like me can search for 'double stop' elsewhere on the web to know more. Also, he explains how the 3 & 6 relate logically, so you don't have to remember this and can come up with the notes for any scale etc.

I have always had this issue when playing tabs. What do I do with the middle/ gap string where I don’t place my fingers. Play it? Play it muted? Not play it?

What really helped me is understanding that the shapes correspond to the intervals of the major scale. Your key signature tells you that the scale degrees are major minor minor major major minor minor major and remembering major scale steps ( whole whole half whole whole whole half) helps me undertand the spacing between the patterns. Am I seeing this correctly?.

great lesson! Thank you. What key would you say your solo is in? Key of C? Since these 6ths are shown in the key of C (major and minor), would you say that all of these double stops in C sound great with C - F - G chord progression? So if I move this to the key of A, I can play the same melody to A - D - E chord progression? Thanks!

Andrew; Maybe finally I have found someone who can validate my understanding of the "3rd's" vs the "6th's" theory concept. It's a "flag" I've been carrying for almost 50 years of playing guitar and learning music theory. I'll continue to carry the "banner" to my grave.... I 1000% believe the following concept: They're NOT 6th's, they're ONLY 3rd's that are inverted !!!!!!!!!!!!! The concept of them being 6th's is BUNK !!!!!!!! Now, the reason this is so, is this; In a two note chord, or harmony, there are 2 notes (duh!!)l The critical thing to understand about the 2 notes, is that one of them is the "root" , or melody, note. (Those are the terms I use to best convey what I mean; there may be a more technically correct term for it; I would be glad to be corrected on this specific terminology) The other note of the 2 note chord, is the harmony note. All harmony is based on starting with the "root" note, i.e. any given "melody" note in the music's predominant melody line. Then, if you want to harmonize that note, you start with the root/melody note and identify which scale note it is, in the context of the scale of the key that the song, (or portion of the song) is in. Then, for the harmony note, you go UP 2 scale degrees, and this note is the "3rd" above the melody note. This "3rd will be a major 3rd or minor 3rd, depending on the number of semitones between the melody note and the note that is 2 scale degrees above the root/melody note. So you add this "3rd" harmony note, and play that with the "root" or melody note, and you will get a pleasant "harmonious" sound that compliments and enriches the melody note, but still leaves the ear hearing the melody note as the tonal center for that note in the song's melody line. Then, if you want a variation of adding the 3rd as a harmony note, you can play the same 'root", or melody, note, but play the 3rd harmony note an octave lower than the original "3rd" harmony note, which puts it below or lower than the root/melody note. But It's Still the same note, and thus, Still a 3RD Harmony !!!!. Just because you drop the harmony note one octave lower so it's lower than the original root/melody note, Does Not change the harmonic function of this note. But If you then try to analyze the harmony relationship between the 2 notes by starting with the harmony note, and then counting UP the intervals to get to the original root/melody note, this is where you erroneously come up with some type of "6th" interval harmony concept, which just isn't accurate, or helpful for understanding what you are creating musically. There's some music theory basics involved here, so an understanding of basic music theory, such as octaves, scales, intervals, degrees, semitone/whole tones, etc, will certainly be helpful in understanding my explanation Thanks

It is like Andrew’s playing in sixths, with the melody being the higher note and the diatonic sixth below it being the harmony.
