The timing for this video couldn't have been any better! I had some water damage and crumbling tile in my shower, and I was thinking about doing a surround but don't want to replace my cast iron tub if I can help it. I want to use the direct-to-stud method as you did. THANK YOU!!!!

I'm doing a very similar remodel I have a old cast iron tub in a slightly different design than yours. I'm using the Delta 500 wall surround. I cannot for the life of it get it to match up to the tub flange on the fixture side. the rest of it works out and fits really well 🫤. Thank you for this video - it was definitely helpful in encouraging!

Thanks for making this video. As you said, not a lot of info out there about if you can do this, or how to do this. I just removed a direct to stud surround with a cast iron tub that the previous homeowner put in, and am about to install a new one. Some things I noticed that the previous homeowner did that may help others who watch this video: Where there were gaps between the surround and the studs, I found high density foam had been glued to the back of the surround. This helped fill that void and made the wall feel more solid when cleaning them or bumping into them with an elbow while showering. The previous owner also used some tile grout along the bottom of the surround to hold it in place better, then covered the grout with caulk for a nice finish. I think I'm going to try some of these tricks on my new one.

This was a very helpful video. We're not really wanting to have to yank this original cast iron tub out if we don't have to! Good to know a straight-to-stud surround will probably work for our situation.

Thank you. We have a house built in 1954, and we needed to pull out the old tile of the basement bathtub to locate a leak. Then, we thought of what you did, and are so glad it can work. Put another video up of your refinishing the cast iron tub!! Thanks.
@fastj143 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I didn't video the refinishing process. But it went pretty decent. Good prep is key. Used a kit we got from Lowes.

Do you think using the silicone at the bottom will make water come out onto the wall on the outside?
@fastj148 ай бұрын
@@chelseamccormick4063 I feel like the shower curtain keeps water from the wall. And water that drips down from the surround to the tub should end up back in the tub. My tub had a slight angle towards the inside so that water would run back into it.

Man, I can't remember the exact model number. It is an American Standard brand surround. I think we purchased it at Menards. Looking back, I wish I would have documented the model number and stuff.
@terrim.6023 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! We are doing the same thing now.
@bortz02302 жыл бұрын
I advise people not to get this American Standard surround. It's manufactured so that there's air gaps behind all those inset sections that you see in the video. Those insets can't be flush mounted to the wall because of it's natural 1/2" gap to the wall, so every time you clean it, the surround moves and breaks the tub to surround caulk seal, causing a re-caulk job needed every year. Pay more for better.
@fastj142 жыл бұрын
I have re caulked each year, but honestly with the old surround it was no different. It still looks great, no major issues and holding up nicely.

Did you have to use the liquid nail?
@fastj143 жыл бұрын
I would recommend it. I'm not a professional or anything, but with an application like this, there is nothing to hold the bottom in against the wall. So if you were to not use Liquid nail and just caulk it, it would probably have quite a bit of flex and movement to it resulting in cracked caulking.

Thanks for the video and reply!

You're welcome! Hopefully it was helpful. Ours has been holding up just fine oh, other than I need to redo the caulk already. I think I'm going to go with silicone next time.

@@fastj14 it was very helpful. Me and my brother are putting a surrounding in at my moms and was wondering what held it to the wall besides the screws around the top. Not a lot of info on KZbin about that kind of thing.
@anitawheeler1773 жыл бұрын
What part of the installation did you use liquid nail? We just had this exact surround installed and the area under the faucets and on the back wall in that lower area flex and break the silicone. We haven't finished the walls yet so I suppose we could remove the surround and reinstall with whatever additional steps you did.
@fastj143 жыл бұрын
I used it on the studs behind it. I found that the bottom of mine also flexed to the point it would crack the caulking. I'm going to try using a more flexible silicone soon.

@@fastj14 maybe a bead of silicone on the tub before you place your tub surround could help keep it intact too.
