UPDATE: Apparently overclocking the RAM on Phenom CPU's isn't really worth the effort, since jumping from 1333 MHz 1700 MHz does not seem to increase performance (unless you also tighten the timings of course). Thanks to @John Bovay for providing the information. Thanks for watching! Just wondering, the Phenom II X6 1090T had SSE3 and 4a ( www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20II%20X6%201090T%20Black%20Edition%20-%20HDT90ZFBK6DGR%20(HDT90ZFBGRBOX).html ), did you investigate the reason why you had problems with this? I had a 955be in my main pc until this summer, when I switched to i7 860. It makes a very good media center once undervolted to 1.19@2.9ghz; it's also faster to boot up than the i7 based system, both with ssd or hdd. The sleep function on phenom is also more functional than i7

I'm using a Phenom II chip.. an 960T I got to try and unlock the other 2 cores. I was unsuccessful sadly, but it's been a great little quad core for me for going on 10 years now. Obviously I don't play a lot of games any more, but it's rocking a Debian base OS with Steam built in and I do play my older games no problem. This is my main system too. :)

If you can unlock the cores and enter Windows, but only have stability problems, I recommend using AMD OverDrive program. This allows you to set the frequency for each core. Fixing clocks of core number 5 and 6( 2000 ~ 2600mhz), core boosting off, more likely to work without problems.

I'm currently running a Phenom II x6 1055t @ 3.8ghz, it performs okay for games at 1080p low - medium settings, upgrading to a Ryzen 3600 or 3700x next week though so that will help.

I've got a 3600, tested on asrock x570 extreme4 and gigabyte aorus x570 elite Wi-Fi, tested stock and most up to date bios' on each. I used the larger tr2 cooler, and temps at stock approach high 80's to 90's at high loads on stock configuration, precluding any overclocking, and believe me, I've spent 20+ hours tweaking and trying. It is my conclusion that at 1.45 volts demanded even at just desktop loads, (at least with the chip I got), the proc is demanding far more voltage than necessary. If a stranger can offer advice : skip the 3600, go for the 3600X. I believe you'll have far better results.

I owned an X6 1055T until 2013, and it ran at 4.1 Ghz / 3 Ghz Northbridge. Northbridge handled the memory bandwidth, and overclocking it would often make a huge difference on Phenom II‘s in games. I bet that you could get a few more frames if you tried hitting 3 Ghz on the Nb

Hello Valantis, it has been a very long time since I last used my Phenom II X6. Here is what I can remember, but I can not guarantee that it is perfectly accurate: I used my Phenom II X6 1055T with a Scythe Mugen Tower Cooler and two fans at 1600 RPM speed. The X6 would do 4.0 Ghz rather easily, I think at around 1.40 - 1.45 Volts. 4.1 Ghz on all cores was much more difficult and required a crazy high voltage - I think 1.525 Volts at 4.1 Ghz. Almost all of the later Phenom II's can hit 4.0 Ghz - anything beyond that however is luck. Even if your X6 does not overheat, it may run into instability at such a high clock. I can also remember that the Phenom II's had a low maximum temperature. My X6 1055T would crash when the temperature reported by motherboard exceeded 63 C (CPU Core Temperature). At 60-62 C the processor would work fine. Hope that helps!
@SensitizedX
@SensitizedX 3 жыл бұрын
@@valantis7901 By the way, I also tried to get the highest possible clock on this processor. I was only able to use 2 cores at the same time (4 cores disabled in bios), but then I managed to hit 4.4 Ghz haha. That however required an even crazier voltage at 1.5375 Volts. You can see an old video of mine with 4.4 Ghz here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qabNq3p5rK1mj9U

@SensitizedX
@SensitizedX 3 жыл бұрын
@@valantis7901 Northbridge overclocking can help a lot in games! I was able to achieve 3000 mhz Nortbridge. The normal speed on my motherboard was 2000mhz @ 1.175 volts. I think that 3000mhz required around 1.325 volts for the northbridge. But 3000 is a very (!) high speed and not guaranteed to work. A "safer" speed to try first is around 2700-2800 mhz @ around 1.25 volts. About GPU: A lot of new games from the past few years can still work on the Phenom X6 when you overclock it like I did. I know that Witcher 3 can run at +100 FPS when you use GTX 1070 at 1080p high graphics. Some games like "Apex Legends" sadly require a new CPU Instruction called "AVX2". The Phenom does not have this instruction and can not start such games. If you use the Phenom X6 in 2021 for gaming, check if the games you want to play need "AVX2". I would say that using anything higher than GTX 1070 is a total waste on this processor. You will not get any benefits from a faster GPU, unless you really play at 4K resolution ;).

The system I am on has a Phenom II X2 that is unlocked to an X4 on an Asrock 970 mobo. Running at stock 3.3GHz, with 32GB of DDR3-1866 ram(ram is running at 1600 though of course). Samsung 840 EVO boot drive. Because I don't game, I haven't had the need to upgrade this system. With SSDs and so much ram it runs everything I do with no problems. I really really want to build a Ryzen 5 3600 system with 64GB of ram, but I don't have the money for it at the moment. But that's okay. This system runs great, and eventually I will build a Ryzen system.

Why do you need 32 gb of ram with such a weak processor...the most you will probably ever use is 8
@SirReptitious
@SirReptitious 4 жыл бұрын
SeaLife: Multitasking! These days a browser can use many gigs of ram alone(I use a fork of Firefox called Pale Moon). The usenet program I use is called Forte Agent, and that program will happily use whatever free ram you have because it's database files grow to be huge. Add to that mIRC, utorrent, Total Commander, Multipar, Winrar, Media Player Classic Home Cinema, Winamp, Foxit, etc. Trust me, having a lot of ram is great, even when a lot isn't being used by programs, just having it cache recently accessed data can help a lot. And I bought it many years ago when ram was as dirt cheap as it is right now. I have 4x8GB DDR3-1866 Kingston HyperX that only cost $129. At the time I was planning on only buying 16GB, but I decided since it's so cheap(and I knew from experience that ram goes through high and low periods) why not just max out the motherboard with 32GB? It was a decision I do not regret at all.

The only programs that will use all 32GB are Agent, Multipar and Winrar. And Multipar and Winrar only use that much if the rar archive is ~20GB or more. When those three programs aren't actively working my memory use is only around 8-10GB.

I ran a 1090t for years on my XT and later 10 system but I started doing HDTV video captures and recoding and it was slow at that. Back in the day I played a lot of games on it with at the time a okay video card. I was upgraded to a I7 980 and the 1090t is a slow dog by comparison doing video recodes. It is a old chip now too but it was a cheap upgrade 5 years after it came out. If I was just running my plex server and playing older games it would probably still be fine but my usage has changed and the extra virtual cores on the i7 chips make a huge difference in video editing and recoding. My latest box is a I7 4960x with 32 gig and it's about 25 percent faster than the 980. I still have the board around just in case as its a big part of my history and I had a lot of fun and used it hard for probably 10 years. I agree though if you have all the parts and a low budget you can use it nicely for things and non demanding games to this day. Other than that a top end older i7 using ddr3 is a great upgrade or a early ryzen if you have a bit more money for memory and like that. I never overclocked mine and maybe I should have tried it but I was going more for reliability and stability and it ran rock stable for years.

The Phenom II is slow primarily because it only does 3 micro operations per cycle, where the i7 does 4. And the memory controller is slow and no hyperthreading. I went from Phenom II X4 @ 3.6 to i5 3570 3.6 all core turbo, and it's a big difference. Same RAM.

You need to disable the power management and turbo core then you should be able to use multiplier overclocking with stability. You can also get a lot of performance by running the North Bridge at 2800 to 3000. , my 1100 t is stable at 1.425 volts and 2800 North Bridge with 4.1 gigahertz 20.5 multi-player., I can run 4.2 gigahertz faiveley with a 21 multiplier but it uses too much voltage not worth it I have to move the voltage up to 1.5. I also run the Northbridge voltage at 1.4v. , compared to my new ryzen 9 it's really starting to show its age and as you mentioned with it missing the new instruction sets it can't play newer games

Nice video. I'm still using a Phenom II myself, an 1100T. I currently have it paired with an Nvidia GTX 950. I have not tried overclocking, but maybe I will to see what benefit I can get with certain games. Your GTX 970 is too powerful of a GPU for the 1090T. According to pc-builds.com/calculator/ this combo produces a 39 percent bottleneck. So using an even more powerful GPU wouldn't have made a difference in your benchmarks. A perfect pairing for your 1090T would be a GTX 1050 which comes out at less than 1 percent, .13%.

Do you overclock? If you do, you need to raise the CPU-NB multiplier. That's the memory controller multiplier, and you tighten cache timings as well. The memory controller was still a little weak on Phenom II, give it some more speed. Just keep the voltage on that below 1.35, give it some margin. 1.3 volts will get you from 2000 MHz to 2800 MHz probably. Also keep the HT link at the same multiplier as the CPU-NB, that one should require less voltage.

Actually by lowering the resolution youve forced your processor to take all the work from the game and didn't use the GPU at its maximum performance. By not using a resolution of 1080p you actually created a bottleneck scenario in which the load is going to the CPU instead of the GPU. I'd recommend to remake the tests using 1080p settings.

I have a Phenom II x6 1045t machine that I built in 2013 as a gaming machine. It was actually pretty cheap to build even then - had it paired with a GTX 650 Ti. That machine is now in the hands of my 15 year old cousin who thoroughly loves it. Apparently he was able to get a bit of a OC out of it and he put a used RX480 and 16GB RAM which apparently has it running his Overwatch, Minecraft, and Rocket League just fine. Basically what I'm saying is that these processors have plenty of juice left so long as your expectations are reasonable.

I used my Phenom II X6 1090T for about 8 years, and it was great. I eventually demoted it to a home theatre PC and finally retired it last month, in November 2019. I’m now using a Ryzen 3600X, which feels like a worthy successor. The Phenom got better with age. It launched at a time when most games were only using 1 or 2 cores, so it felt like a lot of its potential was untapped. Phenoms finally hit a sweet spot during this console generation, when suddenly applications started to get more multi threading support. It was probably a much better processor at the time of its release than any of us thought back then ... it was just a little ahead of its time.

This was a decent chip for people to upgrade to a year ago if they had an old Athlon from around 2011-2012. Just to keep playing for cheap. Since the release of the 3000 series Ryzen and the fall in price of all the other Ryzen chips this is no longer worth it.

I had a 1045T that was somewhat stable at 3.6Ghz and i do still have it with motherboard sitting on a shelf, but i dont think it would be viable in 2020(without compromising settings) however, another processor from around that time i think would be is the xeon x5690/i7-990x for high end gaming, i'm still using (two watercooled) x5690s with gtx 1080, however i recently found that my motherboard was bottlenecking me, my board, being a server board, has several PCIe slots, but none of them are wired higher than PCIe 2.0 x4(even though 3 of the 5 are 16x length), if i had a pro board like the EVGA classified SR2(lga1366) i could not only have 2 PCIe x16 slots, i could also overclock these processors to 4-4.7Ghz. in some games my dual x5690s perform similar to a 3770k and bottlenecks the GPU(in theory, running at x4 basically halved the performance of my GPU from the start), but in other games that can take advantage of more cores, it acts more like an 8700k and is bottlenecked by gpu, especially sinse it is running at 4x speeds, but even then should still be bottlenecked at full 16x. I just wish i had realised this before i ordered my 3950x system(using 1080 for now as i am waiting for rumored 5900xt

Long live the Phenoms man i'm still rocking an X3 as a daily driver from 2010 for surfing and office work since i don't play games any more and if i do i mostly play old games that my HD6850 and phenom crunches for breakfast. Has been running since 2010 @3.65Ghz 1.428V 1800Mhz Ram @ 9-10-9-27-36-1T and NB @ 2700Mhz 1.3V Out of curiosity what was your NB voltage to get this OC? 4.1 is really good for those chips especially using an air cooler!! Just keep in mind that the temps are quite high. Generally you want these chips at or under 50C for every day use, the thermal shutdown or throttling i don't remember which one is at 65C i think so you are just 5C shy from it. Also in order to get the most out of these chips you need to OC the NB. You get more performance from this than OCing the cores the system becomes a lot more snappier as well. Try for 3Ghz and don't go over 1,35V. You will need an AM3 motherboard probably since the 9 Series wasn't really optimized for Phenom that's why you had problems with the multipliers..

My chip went to something like 3.5Ghz and 2.5NB on stock volts and then needed crazy voltage to get just a tiny bit more. Also it hated temps over 50C when OCed past stock volts. It is "ok" option for ultra low budget, but my recommendation is Ryzen 1200 as entry level, and later upgrade to Ryzen 2600 which is best bang for buck... From Intel only i5 2500k ( i5 2300 and 2400 only if it is cheap as Phenom), and for little bit higher price i7 2600k or non, if you want new go for budget coffe lake motherboards B360 and i3 9100f, performance are insanse... With Phenom you can play games, some will run worse and some will run better, but it is outdated cpu and it is time to say goodbye... Stay away from FX cpu's they are piece of shit, you can use it temporary, because it is dirty cheap, you can upgrade your Phenom using same AM3+ motherboard, but you will have low fps and bottleneck, only bit better in newer games than Phenom... i'm using tyhe phenom III x6 1090T with a geforce 210 bcoz my GTX 770 died a few months ago, this GPU is aful it's like an obsolete potato it can't run CSGO at 60FPS even using a lot of tweaks like: overclocking, using lowest settings, the lowest resolution available, some launch options and an exec to improve performance

..have a 1100t looking for a cheap but decent mobo to give to my nephew as a okay to decent enough gaming pc and his first overall as well as a great, imo desktop-internet machine .. for him to be on the web for himself.. Pairing it with the still very useable 7990 triple stack dual GPU should fair well as also already have a 1200 watt kingwin psu laying around and a ssd/hd and matx case on order.. I may sell my x79, add some money to the pile left and grab a xeon 2690v4 or even maybe a 2683v3... thanks for the cool video..
