Tens was a great suggestion, initially for me when some exercises were painful!

The large foam knee elevation pillow they sent home with me was the biggest life saver the first six weeks. I iced and elevated constantly the first two weeks. When I went for my 2 wk checkup the MD said you've been doing your elevation/ice routine. Most patients have black/purple/blue down their leg. The only bruising I had was above the new knee. No swelling or angry red color around the incision. I've used a TENS Unit for years for Lumbar back pain. So glad that this is included in this video! I did not use any compression during first six weeks. Now 2+ months out - when too active and feel aching from knee I now find a compression sleeve feels good at those moments. The correct placement of TENS pads is a great help!! I always use a cotton ball with a little alcohol and go over spot I will attach pad to. Let dry. When removing pads place them back on plastic sheet they came on. Will extend the "sticky" life of the pads. TENS 7000 is my go to! Less than $40 on Amazon now. I find a heating pad sometimes gives great "aching" pain relieve. When I feel leg pain is more "inflamation" I go to ice. Amazon also has reasonably priced Long Leg Elevation Foam pads. Keep knee above your heart when elevating/icing. Pretty high but it will help your knee not get into the position that can cause "scar tissue"

Thank you so much for all your help. I’m in my 6th week and I’m at 90 degrees. I have done your exercises and have been so helpful. I left PT 2 times in tears. I think they pushed my knee back to much. Thank you so much for all you do. God bless you

From one Tony to another and a "Cincinnasti" native here, THANK YOU for mentioning that a barrier between the ice and knee is not necessary. I have always used the ice directly on my skin and it's so much more effective for me. I don't feel the coldness when a barrier is used.

Thank you for saying ice is not necessary. It has caused me such severe pain.

Again, I learn even more from you! I have been using my TENS unit at home for 3 weeks now , ( I am 6 weeks out from TKR). I do the ice cover, but never heard of the wrap, will try it moving forward… Thank you again for your spot on advice and videos!!

Tony, I hope you know what a super service you are providing all of us. I'm scheduled for total knee replacement in a few weeks and been watching your fantastic videos. The one question I have is do you ice and use compression BEFORE doing your therapy workout or is it better to do it AFTER PT. Thanks so much again for all your video's.

Thank you. After partial medial knee surgery, I’m having serious pain in the inside area (pes anserenus?) area. So rotating my knee really hurts. This sounds like a good idea to try. Thank you

Thank you for all the tips and advice. After the knee surgery sometimes the knee gets heavier. Is there any reason for this.
@totaltherapysolutions4 жыл бұрын
Could be mechanical factors like increased swelling and muscle fatigue. Could be sensory factors like the leg feels heavier but on a scale it would weigh the same. It is common and will improve as your strength and endurance improves.

Loving your videos, I'm 4 weeks out from a TKR. Problem was that the first 6 days my Quads wouldn't fire so after 2 weeks I only had 75 degrees. Then I panicked and pushed too hard. You and my excellent PT have calmed me down ~ now I have 115 to 120 degrees but still a lot of pain at night. A question for you Tony ~ over the last 2 decades I've used cuffs with magnets inside on my knees and they've been a great comfort. Are they ok to use with a metal implant ? Look forward to your reply.

I love your vids ! But I will say my surgeon and my therapist say push through some pain to get better 🤷🏼♀️

Some is reasonable. I use the word discomfort. Once it switches to pain I find that most patients start to resist the motion and I don't gain benefit.

On the TENS unit help wake up my quad muscles
@totaltherapysolutions4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no, but it can reduce some of the pain and with a little time the quad will be kicking again! Pun intended. It has been 3 days, any better now?

The other day I started watching your videos and I ordered my tens unit. It is different than the one you showed today but it is the one you had in the description. Today I am trying to figure out how to use it. I have a stationary bike, would it be good to use after I get my knee replaced? Thanks for the video.
@totaltherapysolutions3 жыл бұрын
I have some videos on this channel that discuss using the TENS unit while on the stationary bike. It is a great combo.

Any tips for a patient with a low pain threshold, and who also HATES the way pain medications affect her? Having a very difficult time rehabbing. Developed infection, went back to surgery to clean that up, then manipulated my knee to break up scar tissue. Not doing much better with exercises this time.

My leg has a knot in the calf and that's where mine hurts bad. I put ice on top and bottom but it seems not to help. What should I do?
@totaltherapysolutions2 жыл бұрын
Have you watched my rolling pin massage videos. It works amazingly well for calf tightness. Are you still in therapy? You would want to make sure the symptoms you are experiencing are muscle tightness and not a blood clot.

I am thinking if buying a tens unit fir the pain and swelling to. I am a month from having partial knee replacement surgery in October 21 2021. On my left knee. I had my right knee on May 3 2021. And again in the right knee on July 29 2021

Can use ice 1 year after a knee replacement is it useful after any effort
@miriamortiz92473 жыл бұрын
Just had my left knee replaced 3 weeks ago today. Is it too soon to try this? I have strange pains that shoot down my shin and some that shoot up on the outside of the knee. I'm looking for some relief from these phantom pains, they're draining.

one of those ice things was put on me at PT and my knee was so hot, it melted the ice, my PT said it is painful PT, you just have to work through it, there is something wrong, but no ones listening

Try lidocaine gel or patches, they numb the area.

With this kind of gel pack it starts warming up as soon as it leaves the freezer. I would be more concerned if someone was using something that was actively being chilled.
