Hey man, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say something. Thank you. I've had to medically retire from the fire department after 18 years and your videos have helped me to have the courage to take on pottery full time. Even though, I have only bought 100 pounds of clay and have $200 wheel of Amazon. The funny thing is none of my stuff has been fired (lol) amd i got recyclingmy clay down to a science (lol). However, i did buy a 10 x24 building and i am in the process of making that my studio. Oh, I almost forgot, that video you did at the end of December in which you just talked really helped me. I hope you’re doing well. You remind me of my (late) dad. After joining the Marine Corp, serving in combat, retiring from the military, signing up for the police academy, spending many years working his way up from state trooper, patrol officer, then becoming a detective, all before helping a friend build up his business before retiring one last time… he joined the fire dept. Dad was found by the roadside with his dogs during his daily five mile walk (tho I remember when his five miles were runs; it was something we did together for many years 😊). He had collapsed. He needed stents in his heart. After he was cleared, he went back to the firehouse. Sadly, a couple years lately he was diagnosed with glaucoma. He wasn’t able to go back to work fighting fires. Instead, he volunteered to work in the office doing desk work until the glaucoma progressed. That man started serving his country, his community, & his fellow firefighters. He didn’t know how to not serve. And in his words, glaucoma be damned, nothing was stopping his five mile walks. 😆 I lost Dad about eight years ago. Since our kids are grown now, I’ve been able to create a pottery studio this year, I really, really wished I could have shared this with him. I know he would have loved it. Matthew leave the water on the outside of your bat close to the bottom of the pot while you torch the bottom. Save your bat from warping. I use plastic bats often and they start to stink and warp if I don't protect the base with water for the first 30 seconds while I really get the base, Just using the small torch. You have the incinerator out. I blast with a fan directly after the torch and it drives the water out quick. You are the master.

I love the torch, I use the torch more than most. Lately I have been torching my cups or two parts, hit then with 20 seconds of a strong fan, get then almost too hard to trim. Then get the wheel spinning really fast, take a spray bottle, hit them with a couple sprays and take off the skin with a sharp trimming tool. I do that usually three times and can get everything much thinner that I can get them using any other method. Trim them down to paper thin. I'll throw a cup, torch good, fan it, trim the foot, spray it, trim it thin, handle it while it is still stuck to the wheel. Cut the flip them fix the bottom of handle and bang you are done. Love the torch. Love it.

Great video! Good tip on how the clay on the bottom adds a good amount to work with on top when you flip over. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

I watched you use the torches in earlier videos and thought that I could use my electric heat gun for the same result. I haven't tried it yet because my pottery room in the basement is unheated and it is too cold to do anything until spring. I will definitely do this. It does seem like it would be better than waiting for the lower part to stiffen up under plastic.

Yes a heat gun will definitely work but maybe not quite as quickly as the gas torch. Good luck and let me know how well it works.

@@katlady5000 I use a heat gun all the time for pottery. Even a hairdryer works well, just a little slower. The studio I work in won't allow open flame.

@@vzeimen Thank you I'm just starting to throw with porcelain and it gets soft fast. Throwing with less water. But I think the heat gun would also be helpful. Open flame does made me nervous.

Would a heat gun work instead of a torch ? I'm struggling a lot making pots that are over 9 inches tall. I'm a self taught potter, never took classes and I have to make a 12 to 16 inches tall vase. I've been trying for 3 days now and can't get it over 9 inch. I still don't know what I'm doing 'wrong' specially since I even used 5# thinking it's the amount of clay, and it doesn't matter if I use 3.5# or 6# I always stop at 9 inch, can't get it higher. Positive thing about it is I have a lot of 9 inch vases now ! I thought maybe if I dry it a little it would help me get some heights. I love that you explain what you do it helps understanding the process or finding what I do wrong.

I remember mentioning to you a long time ago that I like to make and finish a pot the same day by using a torch!! I am delighted to see you doing this Matt. However, HAVE YOU CHANGED your sound system? there's a loud hum from the wheel that is louder than your voice Matt! Which `for me` made this impossible to watch with sound turned on. I did watch eventually BUT with sound turned off. Beautiful end result Matt.

My wheel seems to be loud no matter what I do… I may start looking for a new one… the torching definitely made the process take longer than making several bottoms and letting them naturally dry but it was a fun experiment.

Yes I agree that using the "torch method" for section pots is slower than your normal methods, but does help in completing a pot the same day. I'm glad you experimented with this idea. An amazing pot that you made though! I really enjoyed the video, thank you.
