I’ve heard that to make a good character design you’d need to be able to decipher the character as a silhouette, so I need some practice haha.

Mello Lieb drawning style has almost nothing to do with character design ... but More with your drawning lol ... also in aot d'signs most important Is their face.. after all, they have almost the same uniform

@Mello Lieb That depends how you look at it imo. Many individual character silhouettes aren't easily distinguishable in AoT, but what about the general silhouette of a soldier wearing the vertical maneuvering gear? Or of the weirdly shaped titans? Those immediately summon up brand recognition.

The issue I think that really holds back the characters is the colours. The colours look really chaotic even though they are well balanced it just seems that the colours are too varied which makes the characters less memorable. For example let's take Mario and his colours which are very minimal but very memorable

Good ol' red and blue

Mario and Luigi wear complimentary colors, Mario wears red and Luigi wears green. The same thing goes for Wario and Waluigi, Wario wears yellow and Waluigi wears purple.

The bit about "making clothes practical, imagine what it would be like if they were doing a movie" is interesting. When I started my comic, I tried to kinda ask myself:"Would someone be able to cosplay this?" As I designed my characters. I think that's a good tip.

I love both character designs, however she doesn't look like a 9 year old child, she looks like a woman with dwarfism, her body is too mature for a 9 year old, and her face is also very mature, as if she doesn't have the baby fat most 9 year olds still have.

I tried to apply these fundamentals and techniques several months ago to create OCs when I rekindled my passion for drawing (7 year gap). One of them's a maiden whose character and appearance is a cross between traditional Japanese culture and American 70's gangster culture. In turn, she looks like a fashionable samurai punk.

Practicality shouldn’t have to be an intrinsic principle of character design, something doesn’t have to be translateble to life to be appealing. However there’s a huge amount of inspiration and flavour that comes from figuring out how something might work, the way Whyt was thinking about an auto-zipper and a rack for Gideon’s cloak. It’s a choice, and if you make that choice it should be because it adds something, not that it limits your creativity, eh?
