Michael Wagner, a student from The Bartlett School of Architecture, presented his Marble Maze production design on the antenna conference stage that took place at Dutch Design Week this year. Wagner’s research looks into blending architecture with performance and interaction design.
“Immersive is the new trend. Everything is becoming more immersive in terms of experience design, sound, lighting and video,” says Wagener
Experimenting with different immersive techniques and designs such as holograms and the hollencube, Wagner finally came to the thought of fragmenting a performance and rearranging a story so that it will add an element of complexity while keeping the audience members intrigued.
He thus created the Marble Maze. An idea inspired by the marble run, a childhood game of having a marble run through a path involving various obstacles.
The Marble Maze, shown to the audience through a short film of three kids watching the Mable Maze performance. The marble makes its way through a multi-story building and turns from an analogue marble to a digital one through screens, lighting and holograms. The kids follow the marble throughout the building until finally they’re able to pick up the physical marble. This physical element is important to maintain the audience’s interaction with the performance.
