I have question, I’m trying to power 12 3060 Ti (single 8 pin) each needing 200w (before OC). What I have in hand is 2 1200w PSUs and a mobo with 12 PCIe slots. Each PSU came with 4 PCIe cables. That leaves me short 4 PCIe cables. Do I have enough watts to power the 12 GPUs? Each 6 GPUs will need 1200w exactly before over clocking. What brand PCIe make good quality cables?

I was a little confused about the Radeon at 8:57 . If my GPU does draw 300 watts upon reset, but my VGA cable only provides max 288watts, then should I have connected my GPU with two separate VGA sources (not split) so I have a total of (288 + 288) = 576watts? In the video, I misunderstood it as using one VGA and then using another VGA source but with a 6-pin instead? (288+216) = 504 total? Sorry for my confusion. The video has been excellent so far! @MiningChamber

So, just to be clear. Since one pci-e power source can supply 288w, Technically I can plug 2 rtx 3060 plus both their 2 risers into one pci-e cable source, yes? Both cards only draw 236w after overclocked. I set a temp limiter to make sure the miner won't mine if the card reset to stock setting. So with two pci-e power source I can plug 4 rtx 3060 safely, yes?

Why do you have to plug the 2nd power supply into the motherboard?
@ramazanaktas36994 жыл бұрын
I have watched it all and I have a question. The PSU I got is an 1600W, 1560W is dedicated to 12V rails and I will use it to power an 8x RX5700 XTs rig. It has 8x 8-pin VGA and 6x 6-pin peripheral, I have used 8 VGA's, each is dedicated to a single card (8-pin + 6-pin, the cable is 8-pin to 2x 6+2-pin). I powered risers like this: 4 SATA each dedicated to 1 riser. 2 peripheral ports are left and I used them as each cable powers 2 risers through molex(so 1 perif 2 connections). It looks fine but here is the problem: I am out of outputs and cables. How can I power the motherboard? Manual says I should power with 2 Molex and 1 SATA in addition to 24-pin. How can I accomplish that? What if I plug 6+2pin to GPU and other 6+2 (+2 will not be connected) to riser? Risers have SATA, Molex and 6-pin options and 8-pin cables are already split. Adding manual just in case: download.asrock.com/Manual/BTC/H110%20Pro%20BTC%2b.pdf
@MiningChamber4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thank you for all that details. So from reading it seems like the only thing you don't use is splitters and if that is correct then it should be your solution! You can get a couple of splitters that then will help you power the gpu and the riser from the same VGA strand. Which will save you up some periph ports for your motherboard. Let me know if that works for you or I misunderstood you!

Using MSI afterburner to do your overclocks can help significantly with accidental overwattage. It will completely shut down your cards when things go wrong, reset them and get them back running again at the proper clock speed. @MiningChamber4 жыл бұрын
Hey! So just to clarify you got 4 single vga and 2 dual. But your GPUs are all dual vga and you got 6 GPUs. In that case you can use 4 single vga with splitters so that each vga powers one gpu. Then you can use the 2 dual 8 pin vga to power 2 GPUs each and 4 risers using 2 splitters on both vgas (2x 8 pin gives you 4 total 8 pin. 2 for gpu and 2 for 2 risers) Then you have 2 risers left unpowered, in that case you can use 2 molex strands to power the risers by one each. That will be your best safest method with what you currently have. Alternatively yes you can order another dual vga but make sure it's compatible with your PSU!

@@MiningChamber Thanks for taking the time to reply! From the research I've done the pin-outs are not the same so an adapter is *definitely* needed but I can't find any credible online resources on people doing it besides a real life friend who claims that its do-able as the CPU labeled slots on the PSU are used to power hungry processors, so powering 2 risers on them should be fine (75W * 2). I'm still a bit skeptical so I'll do some more digging. An alternative approach I was thinking of - which is based on the diagram in your video about PCI-E cable load. If I were to power a 5700 XT that required 2 8 pins and the power draw on the card is 225 Watt as rated by Radeon, can I use a Y splitter on one of the 8 pins and use that to power the riser? Is it ok to split one 8 pin pcie strand into 3 risers? I plan on using 5 5700 xts and power 5 cards directly with 8 pins from the psu. Would this be ok?
@MiningChamber3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is completely fine to power 3 risers with one PCIE strand cable. But if your also running a GPU on that PCIE cable along side the 3 risers then it is too risky. You can instead run 3 gpus with 2 PCIE cables by using splitters. Each cable covers 3 8 Pins in total 6 8pins which should be enough for 3 GPUs

So 1x PCI-E 8 pin cable cab deliver 288W of power. What will be the power output of a PCIE cable from the 8-pin head AND the daisy chain ? Is it total 288w ?
@wiggsak87213 жыл бұрын
I am under the same confusion. So my understanding is if you plug in an 8 pin into the psu the max out is 288w. So if you split the first 8 pin on the chain to plug two 8 pins into the gpu and the second 8 pin on the chain to 2 6 pins you can only use a total of 288w. So if you were needing 300 watts on the gpu you are overloading the cable at the psu. You would be pulling say 2x288 into the gpu and 2x75 into the riser. Total draw potential on psu connection could be 726w. Realistically max you would see is 375 (extra 75 on the second riser) that’s still pulling well over the 288w connection. Am I missing something maybe I’m dumb with electricity but I am making the assumption that every time you split you aren’t resetting the draw. Maybe I’ll put it this way you can’t pull 288w at the end of both 8 pins that were split. It really would be 144w max on each end of the 8 pin split and you wouldn’t be able to use the other 8 pin on the chain. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

Great video. There's only one thing I don't understand. at 15:20 you say that if you buy 8 pin to dual 8 pin cables, you should make sure they are compatible, but not for splitters? I want to buy some pcie 8 pin to dual 8 pin cables to power my rizers and psu's but Gigabyte doesn't sell them, and I'm afraid that they might not be compatible? But I see you using black and yellow splitters that are clearly a different brand than the PSU so I'm confused... I think I figured it out while typing this, if someone could correct me that would be great: The cables only need to be compatible if they are plugging directly on your PSU, so splitters don't have to be the same brand because they connect to the original PSU cables...

Great guide!! I've watched this video over and over again and still have something on my mind. I only have 2 pci-e cables(with 2 6+2Pins each cable) and the same for the molex to power 4 rx 580(8pins). Which is the most safe option?? a. use splitters on both pci-e cable to power 4 rx & 4 risers b. not using any splitters to power 4 rx with pci-e cables only & power the 4 risers with 2 molex cables with dual connections c. please put your recommendation "a" option: is it okay for the pci-e cable to power all the gpu and riser? wont the cables overload? "b" option: power load for gpu & risers would be split for each cable
@MiningChamber4 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Honestly both of your options are reliable, option b does have the factor of molex which I don't like much but option a does have the factor of possibly overloading your cables. So I would use 2x or 4x molex strands so that you power 1 riser or 2 risers per molex. Or you can even power 2 RX 580s and one riser with the pcie strand and then 1 molex for the last riser and repeat for the 2 other GPUs!

Hey, I have 3060ti in my system with a Thermaltake 750W PSU. I've been mining for a month now and I decided to buy a 3060. My PSU is not modular so I have to roll with what I have. There is only 1 cable coming out of PSU but at the end of the pins there is 1 more PCIE connected. Kind of like an extention. Since my MOBO doesnt have any other slots for the second GPU, i'm going to use a riser. In that case i need a splitter as well. But i only have 1 spare PCIE. I'm trying to figure out what u said at 7:00 but i'm still confused. Is it safe to get a splitter and plug it to the spare PCIE connection that i have and plug the other sides of it to GPU and riser? My 3060ti uses 120W while OC'd and 3060 will be near that too. But if OC gets crashed somehow, the total power draw will be more than 288W. Since all connections are on the same cable, isn't that going to be dangerous or is my logic wrong here? I have spare molex cables coming out of PSU as well and i'm not sure if i should get a splitter and just use PCIE connections or use 1 spare PCIE for the GPU that i'm going to get and power the riser with molex OR get a whole new modular PSU. I feel dumb for asking these but i'm completely new in this whole mining thing and i just wanna make sure everything's ok.

Not recommended to use Sata for risers on cards that are over 75W and use the PCIE x16 slot as a main source of power. Example: GPU Card has 1 six pin power connector but is rated for 150W. Standard rating for 6-pin is 75W. The PCIE x16 slot can provide the other 75W. In this case the Sata is only rated for 54W and you would want to use 4pin molex or 6pin for the riser. If the gpu card came with two 6pin power connectors and you use both of them to cover the full 150W, then Sata would be okay for powering the riser.
@MiningChamber4 жыл бұрын
Awesome! That is great to know thank you for the information!
@sirsmeghead3 жыл бұрын
Precisely, if a card uses more than 54 Watts, then you should even consider using SATA power for it's riser (and since the PCIE connector itself is rated for a max of 75 watts, powering it with a cable that's only rated for 54 watts is asking for trouble in the future). Either use Molex to power that riser or perferably a GPU power-cable to power risers. Not a single person I've ever talked to in various Mining Discords (several other Mining KZbinrs etc) has said you should use SATA power to power a riser, not even as a last resort. So personally I'm sticking with GPU-power cables, and if I don't have any more of those, then Molex, and I think everyone else should too.

Hello Mining Chamber, is there any difference between the 6pin to 8pin dual and 8pin to 8pin dual? You say that in windows, there’s a chance that your GPU may have to reset it’s over clock, causing an increase in wattage usage. Is this also as likely to happen in Hive OS, or should I not worry about it?

Great video! Just a follow up question though, I’ll be running an 8 GPU rig with dual power supplies that I already had (1000 and 850 both platinum) I’m also using 5700 XT THICC III ULTRA’s all around. Would I be safe using splitters? I’ll be plugging 4 and the mobo into the 1000 and the other 4 into the 850 and have the 24 pin splitter. Also, all of the cards use dual 8 pins, do I run one Y splitter for each GPU and just go with the 6pin straight to PSU for risers?
@MiningChamber4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can use as many splitters as you can just follow the rules of balancing the watts between all cables. It is recommended to power the gpu and riser with the same PSU so try to distribute your connections properly so each PSU takes a number of gpus and risers. Only thing you need to worry about splitters is to not connect a splitter into another splitter!

Yes that is the regular vga strand! Goes from psu to gpu
@michaeltan5114 жыл бұрын
My experience is that not all PSU's will allow you to use PCIE splitters on their VGA strand. Example - I have a Silverstone Strider Platinum 1200w, and they come with 8 VGA strands (single 6+2 pin only). When I try to add a splitter to power the GPU (which requires 2x 6+2 pin), the whole rig just will not turn on. If I then try to use a different VGA strand from another PSU model and plug them into the VGA port, you get the same problem it just will not power up at all. Maybe it has some kind of intelligence built in to stop people from mix-n'-matching their cables to avoid litigation in case of electrical faults etc..... Do you have any PSU recommendations for 6x 5700XT's?
@MiningChamber4 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard of that before! But I do know some PSUs have different wiring so if you try to use cables from different PSU that isn't compatible or splitters that are made differently then you will have a high chance of damaging your hardware!

Depending on which gpus you have. If you have GPUs that are low power such as 1660 ti or super then you can run 2 on one strand. It's all about the # of wires !!! SATA and MOLEX have one 12V wire and multiple connectors on the same wire, while VGA has 3 wires. The amount of splitters is not relevant since power needs to exit the PSU on multiple wires. You just need to count the 12V wires from the PSU. I didn't know it might use up to 72W from the riser card, that's the most valuable information in this video. I'm also no sure a motherboard could provide something like that in normal use. One more thing, do you know if it's safe to mix power from multiple PSUs on the same video card? I feel that having a common power rail might be beneficial to scale up, but at the same time overcurrent protection is gone. Same with the server PSUs, it can melt a GPU before any overload protection kicks since it's designed for a lot of power.
@MiningChamber3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the info!! I have a section in the server psu video dedicated to this topic so if you don't mind checking it out to give the approval on it, it would be awesome! Yes you can do this for sure and it's really safe but in some scenarios you will end up not having enough strands to run all cards, that's why using splitters is a good way to be able to power more cards with your PSU
