I have ADD and find that I use audio for so many things. Cooking, laundry, driving... With so much content released for all of us to consume (KZbin, movies, TV, gaming...) audio media is a joy that allows you to enjoy great content without consuming chunks of your time. In a way it GIVES YOU BACK TIME letting you enjoy great content during times designated for other activities. I honestly believe we are going through a kind of audio renaissance - as people discover how this seamlessly layers into many of their other activities. Those who listen often listen a lot - and content creators are realizing how loyal, enthusiastic, and active this demographic is. Great suggestions made by other commenters. Check some of them out! :) (I realize audio content doesn’t suit everyone but I think it’s worth giving a try)

I listen to old time radio, and since they're public domain you can find a lot of them on archive.org. Meaning they're free to download. Shows range from the late 1930's to the early 1960's. My favorites are x-minus one, dragnet, suspense, and gunsmoke. They're old yeah, but it takes a healthy imagination to picture the show in your mind as you listen, great stuff. archive.org/details/oldtimeradio

I listen to a lot of documentaries on KZbin, because they usually go for most of an hour, can sometimes be related to what I'm doing (I do a lot of historical stuff) and I can look up at the screen now and again without being overly distracted. Most of the time a documentary will be interviews or long filler shots of trees or a city skyline - so you can watch without really watching. And the little bit you do watch stops your eyes getting sore from looking overlong at your models and getting eyestrain. Other than that, guys like your good self on KZbin have dramatically increased my inclination to paint all evening.

Not only for my hobbies, also when I'm at work and when not feeling like going out and excercise. I found out listening to podcasts motivates me to workout better than listening to music. I would like to recommend my favorite podcasts. Adventures in Design with Mark Brickey. Making it with Jimmy Diresta, Bob Clagget and David Picciuto. The Woodworking Podcast with April Wilkerson, Nick Ferry and Jay Bates. The Deep End Design Podcast with Wes McDowell, Mikelle Morrison and Nick Luongo. WTF with Mark Maron. The Freelancer with Paul Jarvis. Highly recommended not only for the specific topics but, for the life stories and problem solving situation. Greetings from Chihuahua, North Mexico. Atom you nailed it again. I listen to music or podcasts and it depends on my mood as to what type of either I listen to. Perhaps I am somewhat in the minority here as I am not a gamer at all, I paint on commission. What is difficult is that there are many times I will have a commission that I really don't like, I don't either like the miniature, the sculpt or the choices made by the client. A good example is Space Marines, for whatever reason they are something I just don't like painting, I cant get "the feel" for them at all, I find them mundane. Getting paid I don't use as a motivation as I think that takes away from the piece or pieces you are doing and it shows in your work. So what do I do other than music and podcasts. I try to personalise each miniature in my head, I try and become invested in the fictional character. I also think one or two projects ahead while doing the on the table project, this gives me motivation to finish what I am doing so I can start on the next one. I work on miniatures 8 to 12 hours a day 6 days a week so motivation is a big thing for me to try and retain.

Hei Atom! Listening something while you do something creative is critical and many artist use it. I know that many comicbook artists use same music same music throughout single project since it helps to get into same wave-length in mood and thought process as you were yesterday.

The trick to not be distrac is playing a movie that I already know, like LOTR, Conan flix and all that kind of classic film that I enjoy. That give my sometime the inspiration, ideas and The mood I need to enhance my painting! For me that make the hobby more enjoyable! A good movie is like a good song, always fun the listen!!! ;)

Music it depends what I'm doing, Buckethead's massive discography helps with that. i'm very new to the hobby so i don't struggle with motivation yet, i just can't stop painting, but i do have a few podcast recommendations! 1. the adventure zone: a popular dnd real play show by 3 brothers (travis, justin, and griffin mcelroy) and their dad, clint mcelroy. it's 90% goofs a d dick jokes, but when it gets emotional, it gets *EMOTIONAL* 2. directive: a short sci-fi "radio play" about a lone man taking care of sleeping passengers on a space voyage. it details how he got into that situation and how he deals with the loneliness. the ending is an emotional gut punch though, so be careful you don't get tears in your paint. 3. the penumbra podcast: another radio play style show with 2 main stories. one is about a detective from mars, the other is about fantasy knights fighting monsters. they both have a lot of gay and queer representation if that's important to you.

Podcast Reccomendation: Welcome to Nightvale Cosmic Horroresque writing, diverse casts and themes. The later stuff has more focused stories that will leave you craving more. But like uncle atom I'm sat in the backlog about 100 eps in I have a very mundane job and this really helps as of time of writing I think there's 130+ episodes about 25 minutes long.

One of my favorite pod cast is Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History". Audio books Honor Harington series or Jim Buther's Dresden files series. Among many others. Happy hobbying.

I launched this video mainly out of curiosity of the title (I'm a subscribed, for clarification), but I had this happen to me, where I just got out of the hobby because I lost motivation. This method got me back and even on to where I'm considering going professional with my hobbying (maybe). Anyway 8-12 hours for audiobooks are the SHORT ones! Check out The Song of Ice and Fire (especially if you've read the books, because its a completely different experience) they're 30-40 hours each. Star Wars has a seemingly endless library, and the money to get great readers. My brother is way into the Tom Clancy books, which are also long as... well... you know. Anyway, westerns are typically long and engrossing (check out Louis L'amour). And of course... there's the Black Library. *dramatic music plays* Another couple things I like are TED talks and Big Think. Those are both fascinating and most of the time very visually light, plus you can crush your friends with FACTS about STUFF! (seriously, real-world, groundbreaking and ingenious discussions about any topic you can imagine by some of the finest minds this race of humans has to offer! ALSO THEY'RE FREE!)

Audiobooks are my painting companion of choice. I am currently listening to the 47 hour reading of The Stand by Stephen King. Great value for your money on Audible. I would also suggest a grimdark fantasy trilogy by Joe Abercrombie called The First Law Trilogy. I just found this space and I really appreciate Atom's efforts.

I am just getting into 40k and been loving your videos. Here are some podcasts to check out. We're Alive (zombie survival radio play), Hardcore History with Dan Carlin, basically anything on the Maximum Fun Network. Such as Sawbones (weird medical history), The Adventure Zone (starts a little slow as they learn, but EPIC D&D play podcast), etc.

I watch mini painting twitch streams whilst I paint. That way I get the audio motivation, the visual inspiration, possibly insights to new techniques and the ability to ask questions whilst painting.

I've been bingeing your videos lately, just getting into painting minis and with an art background. But I'm an art instructor and already do this exact same thing when creating my sample paintings for my classes I teach. I already listen to the last podcast on the left. But others I really enjoy are my favorite murder, and that's why we drink, serial, any Stephen king novel, (see a theme yet? Haha) Dresden files series, lore, crimetown, and a bunch of others.

All the Disc World audio books, then the Harry Potter audio books read by Stephen Fry, by the time i have got to the end of this long list, i can start it over again and it does not get boring, also a lot of the Star Wars audio books are great.

I do a mix of all the things you mentioned. I never do movies on Netflix while painting though for the same reason, I will find a series I've liked but watched a few times, I enjoy listening and can already visualize whats on screen from watching it many times. Id been going through the various star trek series recently. My main Pod cast is Privateer Press Primecast, and i have a few Pandora lists I sometimes que up when not in the mood for the others. I really want to try the audiobook thing now though.

Oh boy something I can actually contribute to. Here is my long list. I'll try to break it up by genre. Comedy/Entertainment: RoosterTeeth Podcast Off Topic Podcast Lizard People (A show about Conspiracy Theories) Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project Informational/Educational: Freakonomics Radio Question of the Day Dan Carlin's Hardcore History Common Sense with Dan Carlin The History of Rome - this is completed series and is amazing Revolutions Podcast Stuff You Missed in History Class Stuff They don't want you to know - 3 guys talk about conspiracies and talk about them in an unbiased fact based approach not really tin foil hat people Criminal Serial This American Life Narrative: Welcome to Nightvale Alice isn't dead Lore - I have never been more terrified listening to anything with some of these stories Myth's and Legends Podcast - I put this under narrative because the host/writer combines multiple tellings to come up with the most coherent story The Breachside Broadcast- Wyrd's official Malifaux fluff podcast Limetown As for Audiobooks the Dune series on Audbile has multiple actors to play the different parts so it is almost like a radio play and is very enjoyable if you like Space Opera. Other Audiobooks I suggest are: Starship Troopers (nothing like the movie and helped kick off Spess Mehrens), Zoo, Guns Germs and Steel, the Vampire Chronicles series, On Killing (is a veterans view on militaries attempts to make normal men into killers), and of Course Game of Thrones are great values when it comes to cost/hour. I listen to a lot of spoken audio content as I am sure you can tell. Spotify also has audiobooks and comedy routines that are free even for basic accounts. There is Arch Warhammer if you like Warhammer lore. CPG Grey does great youtube series as well. I think I'm starting to get rambley here so I will step away from the keyboard. If you want more info on these just reply or PM.

For me, it's Sirius music channels...my paint station is in our dining room so if I'm at home alone and painting, I fire up 90s on 9, Liquid Metal, or one of the alternative rock channels on the TV and have that going through the sound system as my background.

I do the same. In mini crunch time I forbid myself from listening to podcasts or books when not painting. Mmy favorite Podcast is Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, which is on itunes and his website. The book I'm listening to now is SevenEves by Neil Stephenson. Great book on preserving humanity after an apocalypse. Hint for you if you use audible a lot. Audible narrations usually run $12-15 dollars on the audible website. Sometimes if you buy the kindle version of a book you can add audible narration for the book for $2-5. Often the price of the kindle book + narration is less than just buying the narration alone from audible.
