Using Berninas BSR foot with a 400 series machine. Bernina 430 440 440qe 435 450.

I have had customers miss one simple step when trying to use a BSR freehand sewing foot with a 400 series Bernina. When the foot is plugged into the machine it does say BSR on the screen, but there is one button that must be pressed to start using this foot. Also slow down the movement of the material should you hear the beeping like sound. That is the machine warning you that you are moving the material too fast.

what if it doesn't say BSR on the screen? I had my machine serviced recently, and I've got the BSR foot on and plugged in, and BSR isn't showing on the screen. I have a 450.

billie84105 Your problem is either with the foot or the outlet on the machine. If I had this happen I would take a BSR foot that I know that works and try it in the machine to see if the machine is the problem. If the machine and the BSR outlet function correctly then you turn your attention to the BSR foot. Sometimes all that is required is a simple firmware update of the foot. This can be accomplished by plugging the BSR foot into a newer machine like a 830. The firmware in the foot will automatically be updated by plugging it into a newer model. At that time the foot needs to be tested in another machine to make sure it functions properly. In your case you will need to take your machine and the BSR foot to a dealer so you can find out if the problem is with your machine or the foot. Every BSR foot that I have had that did not work in a machine, worked after it was plugged into a newer model and the firmware of the foot was updated. The foot only needs to be plugged into a newer model like the 830 and the update will happen automatically. So a trip to a Bernina dealer or to someone place that you know they own a 830 or newer model to update and test the foot.

thanks for responding in such detail! I just got my machine back from being in the shop for 2.5 months. Most of that time spent waiting for our turn, and waiting for parts. I'll call the shop tomorrow and see what they have to say. I was thinking to try my BSR on another machine, and vice versa. Do you know if it's common to have something like this happen after servicing?

billie84105 If it worked before the repair and not after, this is not normal and would highly suspect that either your machine was not repaired correctly or possibly something happened during the repair that is now causing your problem. The outlet on your machine that the BSR foot plugs into has 4 wires running from it that end at a plug that gets plugged into a smaller circuit board. That smaller board controls things like your sewing light and several other items. The main print circuit board that is mounted on the inside of the front plastic of your machine plugs into that smaller board. I have no idea what was replaced. But some of these plugs are unplugged to take the machine apart. So test the BSR foot on another machine to make sure the foot is working. If it is, then you need to get whoever worked on your machine to straighten out this problem. Especially if you know that it worked before the repair.

Good question! Unfortunately I do not have a 400 series machine here right now to work with and give you a correct answer. I would think that you should be able to go into the BSR2 mode with your model. Though I can’t say for sure that I ever gave that a try. I always tested the door and machine in BSR1. Does the manual mention the two BSR modes? Sorry I could not help you out. Bill

As far as I know, information like machine hours are definitely stored on a ic chip that stays with the machine. Information on that chip can not be changed. That chip would need to be reprogrammed to change any information. I do think that the machines stitch count is also stored on this chip. When a Bernina is serviced by a service tech, that information is entered on the service screen. Now this will reset a service stitch counter but that does not change the stitch total for life time total on the machine.
