BERNINA Broken Front Casing Replacement

The front casing on these Bernina models have the tendency to break in a way that makes them loose. The screw holes eventually crack and disintegrate, making the mounting screws fall out.
The cover can get so loose it almost falls off the machine.
Luckily, Bernina supplies a replacement front casing with modified screw posts and screws.
The kit also includes a handy table extension/flat bed.
This video covers removal of the broken casing, swapping the facias and electronic components and assembly. There are also some other broken screw mounts that I fix up as required.

Very helpful, thanks. Your video gave me the confidence to partially disassemble my 440 in order to correct a problem with the light hanging down. The last person who had it apart was sloppy in reassembly and it was bugging me. I one small complaint- the last screw you installed when reattaching the front cover was one you had not mentioned during disassembly. I was trying to apply more pressure to get that front corner separated when I noticed that the light was now in the correct position. So I never needed to take that last step in removing the front cover. Of course when I watched the end of the video I saw you reinstall the screw that was stopping me from getting the front all the way off. Thanks again.

I am sure that this is a very fine machine, but one thing for sure, looking at what it's made of, I'm not about to trade in my vintage Elna Supermatic Star.

And I'm sticking to the vintage Husqvarnas. They have a bit of plastic, but it is controllable.

Great video, I have a Bernina 750 quilters edition and when the power is turned on there is only a flash of the light of the sewing light, checked the fuse near the motor and that seems ok, I guess I will keep checking the electrics of the rest of the machine, thank you.

I have this machine and the black race cover needs to be reattached as the two tiny rings holding it in place have popped off. One of them appears to be slightly cracked and I have two new ones on order. Could you possibly demonstrate the easiest way to reconnect the cover to the machine as I'm having difficulty imaging how it ca be done. Thank you for all your informative videos!

Great info. Thank you. @InStitches do you know the Bernina part number for the front panel+bench kit? I have the same machine and it's been looked after with minimal use but the case screw mounts have done the same thing.

Good video. What is your opinion on tantalum capacitor? New bernina s are having a big problem with them. They blowing up sooner than expected. Electrolytic caps are better?? Thanks

Hi. I know tantalum capacitors of a certain age (around 20 years +)can fail short circuit with a bang and puff of smoke. Maybe Bernina are cutting costs and the capacitors are not very good quality? Electrolytic caps have a bad habit of leaking an damaging components. Thanks.

First of all, thank you for a great video. It was cool to see the whole repair process and attention to details. You do a great job and even use ESD-protection! What was the price of the kit? Did you get any discount for it as it's "known design flaw"? I think it's a bad design from Bernina to fix only part of the problem as some of the broken posts are part of the face shield that is not being supplied with the kit. Can faceplate be ordered as a separate item? It was a brilliant solution for the broken hole. Part fitted like a glove! Imagine surprise on customer face when there will be a Honda Motorsports part in their invoice :)

Bernina did not supply any discount unfortunately. From memory, the kit was around $275 New Zealand dollars, about $170US. Thanks.
