In this video, Greg and Erik put in the final piers of our barn build. They are using Bigfoot Footings for the corners, along with 18 inch sonotubes.
We are excited to bring you along on these beginning steps of our barn build. The goal for this summer is to get the slab poured (mid-June) and then to mill A LOT of lumber to use for the build. If you haven't watched our barn build process from the beginning, check out the playlist at the end of this video, as we have shared from the start of this process.
We are also finishing up our sawmill cover / sawmill shed build. If you haven't checked our that series/playlist, definitely check it out!
***If you haven't checked out our Sawmill Cover Build from the beginning, definitely check out the playlist. We have shared the process of building this sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and live in North Idaho. This sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between! We are excited to complete this project, so we can continue milling lumber for our barn build.
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we are building:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We will be sharing the entire build!

Thank you! The Bigfoot forms were Greg’s dad’s idea to anchor the corners. We are looking forward to the build, too and will be sharing more details about the barn and plans. You’re welcome anytime! 😊

Bigfoot Systems is a Nova Scotia, Canada based company and has been around for about 25 years. I remember seeing their Bigfoot forms used on an episode of This Old House in the late 90's or early 00's and never forgot about them, the name is pretty catchy. Excellent product!

What a small world, so did Lars, Greg’s oldest son! You’ll have to message me her name and we’ll ask him if he knows her. And, yes, the cross country shirts are definitely a part of the building attire!

Thank you! Definitely a lot of work in our future. Looking forward to watching your barn’s progress, too. We still have A LOT of wood to mill for this…I’m guessing you do, too?! 😅

These bigfoot footing forms seem BIG! But, we are happy with them and think they will be a great support to our barn build! Have you used them before?

Those BigFoot forms do two things , they are a great footing for the columns and they act as wedges to resist them pulling out of the ground .

You guys could have saved a lot of time and effort by using a skid steer with an earth auger attachment to drill the proper size holes for the bigfoot footings. There would be less disruption of the soil leading to less settling over time and it is less work as there is less to back fill. Could you have used the largest size bigfoot to avoid having to put two or three piers sistered together?

The soil type didn’t allow us to use an auger. Good topsoil for the first 12-20”. Then it turns to sandy gravelly river rock that does not keep its shape. Holes end up mushrooming out and for the size and depth we decide just to dig them out. It was a lot of work for sure. Thanks for watching! 😃
