@Mayara & Omar & Friends Have you used a Pentium 4 in the modern day? A low power i3 is several times stronger than a P4 with just one of their cores.
@dankrakes4648
@dankrakes4648 3 жыл бұрын
@Mayara & Omar & Friends Are you using a hard drive instead of an SSD by any chance? That may be why your device is so slow. If you switch to an SSD it should be much faster. From what I can tell you have a 4th gen i3, so if you have at least 4gb of ram it should work fine if you've got an SSD. The integrated GPU is indeed crap and you can't do anything about it though.

The second stick of ram is under the keyboard on the other side of the motherboard if I recall correctly. This was my first new laptop (but the amd variant), had it for years before selling it on. I remember when I bought it they advertised it as 'only weighting as much as a gallon and a half of milk' or about 8lbs. This thing was a beast and ran great the whole time I owned it.

Great review! It's always good to see these older Windows XP and earlier based laptops get a second life with more retro based tasks, as some pieces of software simply will not run on anything newer. Also, which SSD bracket do you recommend for older IDE hard drives? I have a few IDE hard drives that I might want to convert to SSD so it might come in useful to buy some laptop IDE to SSD converters (better than picking up used IDE hard drives, and IDE to SATA will not fit).

What a hell of a coincidence! I just picked up an HP nx9110 and it's basically the same laptop, just with a different paint job. It's in absolutely fantastic condition for such an old system- literally everything on it works, including the battery! And unlike a lot of similar systems from the era, it seems to do a pretty solid job of keeping itself cool even under load without too much noise. It's a surprisingly nice computer and I like it a lot. BTW, the other ram slot is under the keyboard. It will boot up with 2gb, but mine crashed shortly afterwards. Haven't quite figured out why.

These machines are very similar to the HP ZV/ZX5000 laptops. There were Intel/ATI and AMD/Nvidia versions of both these Compaq machines and the HP machines too. The Intel versions of the HP ZV5000 laptops would have the Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP in them. The ZX version, however were far different. They would come with either a 64MB Radeon 9200 or a 64MB Radeon 9600 or if you were really wanting some power, you could also get them with a 128MB Radeon 9600. I believe the highest GPU the Intel Compaq R3000s got was the 64MB Radeon 9200. I have the recovery discs for the ZV/ZX5000. I'm not sure if they would work on the Compaq machines though. And yes, that 2nd fan only runs when the CPU gets hot enough.

Unfortunately my machine powers on the screen flashes a Compaq logo and in less than 3 seconds the pc just dies. I noted that the Power Input states it needed a 90W DC Input, however I currently use a 65 W adaptor to power this machine. Could this be the reason my pc dies before even reaching HDD activity? Should I invest in a 90w 19 v adaptor? Also where can I get a IDE ssd?

I shouldn’t be surprised that this exists. If Dell had a super jacked up desktop class Pentium 4 laptop as well as HP, makes sense that Compaq would have one too. There is at least one or two of these super chokers that were made per company back in the day.

Looks nice for 2004 standards. Probably a good number of ports for expansion.

I got a 2004 Acer Travelmate ..its a Pentium 4 ..has TFT monitor ..its thick and weighs a lot too ..but frankly i love it ..think i paid £17 off E Bay ..compared to todays lap tops ..these are solid beasts . Somehow you get attracted to older machines nobody wants ..i then bought an Asus 8100 for just £1 in good nick !

That NordVPN sponsor shout out caught me way off guard for a second. Then I remembered there were a lot of dial-up users in 2004 still. lol

I bought one of these back in 2010, it was the athlon XP and radeon x200 model. I recently bought another and it was an athlon xp and geforce 4 440 model. What's interesting is the option for really old geforce chipset but the CPU is a rebranded K8 sempron, making it the only Athlon XP to feature SSE2. I tried up upgrade it to a newer sempron since it was s754 but it did not appear to be supported. Perhaps the radeon x200 model supports a newer cpu. The amd versions ran ice cold, though, and mine don't even have the second fan.
