Using D'Addario Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuners for the first time.

Read my little review below:-)These tuners are pretty cool. They lock and automatically trim your strings. In practice, I see these as being mostly gimicky at best. I'd prefer just to cut my own strings if I'm honest. This took way longer to string up than any other set of tuners I've ever used. Granted it was the first time, I still think the entire affair is a bit needless. Just get a pair of wire snips and regular old set of locking tuners for my money:-)

Thank You,not boring at all.The close ups showed me what I needed to know.Since the string angles down when you put it through the hole..It's as low as it can be on the string post.The Best thing about staggered locking tuners,is the 2 shortest tuners.Found that out after I'd had them a while.This is Exactly what I'm looking for in a locking tuner.That it trims the string is just a +...👍👍

Very useful close-up shots to understand how these work and so quick to restring too - I'm going to buy these specifically for my Traveler Ultra-light electric travel guitar as the stock ones are rubbish plus there is limited space to neatly trim the excess string manually because of the unusual design. Thanks for this video.

when i was stringing these i was having trouble with 1st thru 3rd strings because it would not lock or something. as soon as it would get to the point where it cuts the excess it would “break” the string

If you like ingenious little devises (I do) these are really nice. They are on a guitar I made a new head for (repaired) and I love the fact that no sharp ends are sticking out and work great.

Gotoh makes a set of self-locking tuners, they automatically grip the strings when you start to wind the tuner. Would be cool to have a set with both auto-grip and auto-trim tuners.

These are very fine. I will use them on my double-neck guitar. The description is kinda a downer, what kind of person likes to do things the hard way all particular and shit. I'm doing a rebuild using all the best parts, and these should make things so much easier and so professional.

No, I put these on an acoustic and could still loosen them and file the bridge just fine. I've also taken strings out of locking tuners before to do more tedious work and have always gotten them back in just fine.

I pull mine nice and tight. You don't want the string to wrap too far around the tuning peg, that's the point of locking tuners.

What do you mean come loose? Locking tuners clamp your string inside of them so there is no need for wrapping which gives you better tuning stability. The strings will stay connected to the tuner unless you unscrew the clamping mechanism on the back of them.

cool idea and I have a set but yeah it sucks because you don't have the proper amount of string to stretch and if you need any kind of adjustments ONCE they're cut that's it....gotta get a new string

I've left a tiny bit of slack with locking tuners before on guitars I knew I needed to work on or do an in depth set up and I could remove the strings and put them back on just fine.

If you don't pull the strings too much, before lock, the tuner will trim, but you have some extra string bifore the right tuning. The secret in non pull tge strings too much befkre lock them

Be careful installing these machineheads. I put mine on backwards and it cut my string in the wrong direction! D'oh!! I really like them though now I have them on the correct way.

Dont know if you are still here, but when you have to take your strings off to clean the guitar or whatnot, do you have to get new strings since it is cut so short?

You may want to add a bit of string around the tuning post? Tonal transfer is important even on electric guitars, I would recommend at least two machine heads spaces of length..

That's how they tell you to tighten locking tuners, not to put string around the post at all. Less string moving around the post when doing bends helps a lot with staying in tune, and thats why you use them in the first place. I dont think it makes a noticeable difference in sound, but who knows.

This defeats the purpose of locking tuners. The more you wrap them around the peg the less tuning stability you have.

You forgot to show ppl how to install these headache D’Addarios tuners to the guitar head ... I bought these 3+3 tuners and what a pain to install them. I installed them by just put them in head and screw them down for couple of them. Then the others tuning knobs won’t start threads with washers , one tuner I use finger tight then I flip guitar over then washer and nut disappeared under couch twice ..grr!!! What D’Addario screwed up on with 3+3 auto trims tuners is that once you open there box , none of tuning knobs aren’t mark on cardboard holding them in place for location on your guitar head... After sizing all of them up ...it looks like 3+3 knobs are all exact... So i install them and what a mess up tuners they are with some nuts barley grabbing any threads on three of them but other three installs fine .... I don’t get it and guitar head shows same thickness thru out the guitar head .....Now I’m going to try one more time to install them and it’s a pain I’ll put on my original tuners back on and never buy D’Addario products again!!! ... Question to you -- How were you able to turn nut on threads couple of turns with use of a washer on it for installation???

I think it's an elaborate money-making ploy for D'Addario. I can see beginners accidentally not allowing any slack and then when they realize they should have left more string to make at least one wind around the peg, it is too late to fix it because the excess was cut the second they turned the tuning key! Then they get frustrated, and buy another set of D'Addarios because they ruined their current one because of their mistake ;-) just kidding. I think these are pretty cool, actually!

You don't need to wind them all the way around the peg, that's the point of locking tuners. I pull mine as tight as possible when putting them on.

I must be the lucky one to have gotten garbage tuners. My 1st and 2nd strings WILL NOT stay locked no matter how tight make the locks. They ALWAYS slip (.009 and .011) and the guitar is impossible to tune. And you can't wrap a few turns around the post because they cut the string automatically after a half turn. I am VERY disappointed with these pieces of JUNK. I have gone through 5 B and 2 E strings so far and haven't gotten to play a note. I will be replacing these with good tuners that do not trim. I will use a cutter just like dad used to do.....

Weird, mine work great. Maybe you're doing something wrong? You know you're not supposed to wrap the string around the peg right? When you lock the strings you should pull them tight so they barely start wrapping around the peg when you tune up.

not ready for those tuners.. I have no problem with standard tuners as long as they are made by a quality manufacturer. I see no reason even to have locking tuners

Woodeso! Explain to the plain folk, why a set of 53$ tuners are better than set of 15$ tuner + 1$ side cutters? The Automatic cutting is such Marketing BS, to be honest they could've done that a hundred years ago, you dont need anything else except a file to make that cutting angle. Guess the guitar players are assumed to be lesser mentally

These cost the same as any locking tuners and have a great ratio. Trimming function is only a plus and i dont see any harm in it. Imho the fastest tuners for changing a string especially if you are on a gig.
