I show how to sharpen drill bits with a Drill Doctor Drill Bit Sharpener. The model in the video is a Drill Doctor 750X. But the process is basically the same for the 500X. I bought the 750X model because I am planning to use it for sharpening some larger size twist drill bits up to 3/4". Too bad it won't go bigger, like up to 1" bits.
This is the Drill Doctor 750X that I used in the video:

Looked at drill sharpeners on KZbin on drill doctor came out on top. Looked at Amazon reviews, said look at KZbin reviews. You came out on top. Superb explanation and tutorial. I never considered split point till now. Just turned 72 and still going strong. You can always learn something new daily if you have a curious and open mind. A SC dude aka Butter Bean made the smartest statement I've ever heard.". Damn Y'all Know I Must Be Stupid Cause All I Do Is Learn". No arrogance or I know everything etc in that statement. I learned a lot from him and subscribe to that statement to this day 40 years later. Great vid again!

Concise and to the point. I just ordered a Drill Doctor this past week. It hasn't come in yet but I'm looking forward to using it. I used to sharpen drill bits quite well freehand by hand but I haven't done that in long time and my eyesight is not what it used to be so I hope this works well. Thanks.

Thanks for the review of the 750X. You covered all of he details nicely. I kept on misreading the manual and thought I needed the accessory chuck to sharpen 3/4" bits. But the 750X comes with that proper chuck. I have also had fun sharpening my larger diameter bits. And thanks for the tip on what the 135-degree setting would be good for.

I bought the 750 about ten years ago and have watched several videos including this one. If your drilling wood, plastic, or aluminum it kind of works. I have yet to see it work on hard steel. I have had at least a dozen other people try it and no one who has tried it wants a drill doctor. It doesn't work in hard metals. That's to bad because it would be super handy.

I've owned a 750X I bought new for 5+ years. I have never succesfully been able to make a split bit without the cutting/grinding wheel taking the new edge off when pushing in to make the split. Just tried it again after viewing this video on a 7/32 bit. Same results, sharpen the bit, then try to install into the split bit hole and it grinds the new edge off as well as the back side of the other one.

Thanks for this video. I picked one of these up at a yard sale but it didn't have the instructions. I work in a fabrication shop and the owner is hell bent on only using a grinder that has a wheel that's probably older than I am and doesn't have a flat surface on it. I'm sharpening every drill bit in that shop tomorrow.

Has anybody actually WORN OUT their DD? If so, what specific parts "wore out" or were they broken due to mishandling or carelessness? Also, if parts actually DID "wear out," how long did the part or parts last? As in how many drill bits were sharpened before something let go, shit the bed, imploded, etc.? I can appreciate that moving parts will wear due to ongoing contact (unless they were made of hardened material) but if the machine was able to sharpen, say, 10,000 PLUS bits, is that an acceptable number before said parts became so worn that the original tolerances were no longer met? Now if the tool or parts were worn out after only, say, 20 or 30 bits, then yes I'd say there was a defect or the worn part(s) didn't pass muster for durability and should be taken to task. But considering ANY component that rotates or has repeated contact, "wear" can be expected and anticipated, much like you'd expect from car tires, fan belts, bearings, etc. I would expect that rotating parts like the cutting device WOULD wear out after repeated and continual use, but that is their purpose and should be considered as "sacrificial" to some extent. So buying a spare grinding wheel (or spares in differing grits for stouter grinding needs) or other user serviceable components might be a good idea to have on hand if you expect to use this on a regular basis or over many years. Now if the motor that does all the hard work fails and requires replacement, you never know what the life expectancy will be. A lot of that kind of variable is dependent on the manufacturer and whether or not parts require periodic servicing to lubricate or remove debris to prevent gumming up the works, as it were. Also, if parts are purchased and assembled from outside vendor sourced parts, did the original manufacturer use QUALITY components or were they obtained from the lowest bidder? There are a LOT of variables you have to take into consideration in ANYTHING you buy. Inquiring minds wanna know. ;-)

Good one, but what about 1 inche and 2 inch drill bit?
@user-td1zo3tv9p
@user-td1zo3tv9p 6 жыл бұрын
Manojkumar Varsani, I think that for the purposes of this generic video, the DD presented is likely aimed at the DIYer type and (perhaps) a small shop that doesn't mass produce parts for world-wide sales. To that end, and to address your original question, I'm of the opinion that the typical or "average" user of the DD line of tools rarely (if EVER?) would have need of drill bits as large as you mentioned. When you are discussing a bit of that size, one would likely associate them with a larger manufacturing concern and, as such, would acquire a machine of much heftier construction. But if, in fact, a DIYer did need a bit of said proportions, it would be of light or intermittent need and I wouldn't think a bit of such magnitude would be used enough to dull said bit or bits on a regular basis. Just my $0.02 worth on the idea but YMMV. All that said, and in the interest of curiosity, I, too, am interested in what kind of tooling would be required to sharpen them outside of an industrial need. Anybody have a good answer or idea?

Here is a tip some may find useful. The machine can't read if a drill is chipped or out of shape. It can only polish what it sees when against the striker or anvil. Grind off a few thousands of the tip point with a regular bench or drill grinder and reinsert the drill bit against the anvil. Let the alignment paws grip the drill and continue as usual. You have just tricked the machine and totally new cutting flutes will be the result. I do it with most drills but the instructions won't tell you this trick. Problem solved. GATOR
@rhysbourke9077
@rhysbourke9077 5 жыл бұрын
I know you have only done the theory in your head..!!! Common Sense would make your theory practical but you may off missed the part after the the alignment caws where it sets the depth of material to be removed??? I didn't try with the grinder tst i used a sharp bit to begin with and it came out just like his (1/2 blunt) iv'e done t in 3 types of sharpeners all the same result
@gatorwing6231
@gatorwing6231 5 жыл бұрын
@@rhysbourke9077 You are obviously not paying attention. The alignment paws in the video are only gripping the flutes on one side because the drill is in bad condition. Grinding a couple of thousands off the tip lets the paws grab the drill using both flutes for proper alignment. The paws have nothing to do with the depth of material being cut but instead how aggressive material is removed per rotation. The paws set the rotation angle so the cutting angle on each flute is equal. The adjustment screw on the stopper determines the cutting angle of the flutes allowing different aggressiveness of the drills ability to remove material per revolution. You can observe that the finished product in the video cuts through the metal but the chips it removes are not like a new drill. You don't want either powder or different shaped fragments as that is a sign the flutes were not cut properly (nothing to do with the tip angle). An improperly sharpened drill makes a hole but not uniform in shape. I think you were daydreaming or lack experience. No I haven't only done my theory in my head. I have owned a machine shop for over 30 years. LOL

Cool tool . I am a retired carpenter and could have put that sharpener to good use . I've always just sharpened the bits on a bench grinder . Sometimes they be sharpened perfectly and other times not so much . If I could offer some advice it would be not to drill aluminum like that without clamping it down . I realize you were making a video but a small piece like that could have started spinning around .Especially if it were to climb the bit when you went all the way through . Trust me as I have learned the hard way and smacked my hands several times cutting corners . When you get ribbons of aluminum like that it tells you that the bit is sharpened good .

I had the blue XP. Total piece of shit. I'd be willing to try the 750 if Blowes carried it locally. This way when it sucks, they can have it back.
