As you can see in the video I have a lot of dull drill bits. In the past I've just bought new ones when the old ones got dull and didn't work as well. Now that I have the Drill Dr. those days are over. As you can see the tool works quite well at bringing new life into old, dull drill bits. It is important that you get the bit chucked up correctly however, if not, then it won't sharpen properly. I found that out during the taping of this review. The tool also sharpens masonry bits as well as left handed bits, both in a variety of metals.
That said, I think this is a good tool and something to be considered as an addition to any shop.

I've used the drill doctor for years, and it's really handy mid job, because dull bits are dangerous! I have the stitches to prove it. Dull bits require more pressure, too much and you have a broken bit. Stinks when your hand is what stops the sudden force. Never really did find the split to be terribly handy, but might give it another go after watching this video.

I work in a wood shop, and use the upper-end model. 700 or 750 or something. With as frustrating as it is to use a dull bit with wood, I could only imagine the frustration in dealing with metal.

But I have to say after getting this, watching your video because I don't have the directions, I was impressed with this thing. Great video. I pulled a 3/8" bit that I've had rolling around in a drawer for approximately 20 plus years, followed this video and DANG! I was impressed how sharp this machine got it. I bought one of these for my dad at auction for 10 bucks. I'm a machinist and I always sharpen my drills by hand, I've been at it for over 25 yrs. I thought this machine was pure gimmicks. After reading the instructions and showing my dad how to use it I was actually pissed off that I gave it to him. It works amazingly well and really does grind bits fast and perfect. I told my dad "I'm impressed" He said "wow I never heard you say that before"

If it came with a little chart called "anatomy of a drill bit" pay attention to it, itll reveal if theres a problem. Especially the relief behind the cutting edge. If it doesnt work right off you may have an issue with the indexing and the twist rate of your bit, experiment with it.

I like your honest tool reviews. Ive been wanting 1 for years but there are mixed reviews on the drill doctor. I finally got one and it works great. Its versitile, but that means people dont/wont know how to use them. After personally using it, i can identify the user errors that cause negative reviews. Im glad i finally got one.

Many corporations are too lazy and cheap to write good manuals as they cost extra money and that hinders their bottom line profit. Look at the computer industry if you want a good example look at Apple. I am surprised they don't say Good Luck!

I do this by eye with a grinder and a cutting disc... works like a charm every time! drill bits mainly get blunt if you aren't putting enough muscle behind it or have the drill spinning way too fast!...especially larger bits. cutting grease helps a lot too.

Beautiful bit Sharpener,for faster and smoother drilling on metal start the process by using a center punch and small amount of lubricanting oil and it’s also good to have a small magnet to collect all the metal burrs for safety and easy clean up.

Eric, I might have missed something, but I think you set the drill bit for 118 degrees (using the corresponding notch in the positioning jig) prior to the first sharpening, which you did in 135 degrees (sharpening jig). If so, it may be the explanation for the difference in burrs between the first (135, which was supposed to be "better finish") and second sharpening (118, which is supposed to be "more aggressive"). Also, in Drill Doctor video, it says to "always split the 135 drills".

From my experience with the Drill Dr. I always do 2 full operations of sharping a bit. 1 just doesn't cut it for me. lol I have the original version and the sharping wheel can be flipped over so you can get more life out of the wheel.

thanks for the review, it was very informative.looks like it can work pretty good,and the better your hand control. also allowing the spring loaded tip guide thing to align the bit,followed by turning off the unit after the cut-before you remove the hand chuck will help the end result. i timed them, and it took about 21 seconds to cut with the split , 17 seconds to cut with the 118 , believe it or not it took 17 seconds to cut with the 135 degree also.maybe the tip got nicked a lil when you were taking it out of the split port. resulting in a slower initial cut, i wonder how well it does the outside edge of a 1/2 bit which often goes south when gutting hard steel making it difficult to finish through the hole.

This is a great tool, I purchased one several years ago, it finally wore out so I bought the 750x. I even sharpen new drill bits, as the factory edge is not as good as the drill doctors.

I bought a Drill Doctor several years back. I also have several sets of drill bits collected similarly. The old sets that have become partials due to broken smaller bits ended up combined and resharpened; they suffice for most jobs. Due to the fact they were re-sharpened on the Drill Doctor (often during some cold snowy winter day when I'm not out working on something), sometimes the point is much better than the original. I've even kept a few old broken off bits that are now "stubby" that once in a while work in a tight space where a new one would not. These are the initial go-to sets that sit near my drill press and battery drills. If I don't find what I need, I head to the tool chest for 1 of 2 indexed sets I keep for just such use.

Maxwelhse Yes, the drill doctor is a very good tool. It allows me to have all those old mixed-set drill bits that had become discarded sharp and ready to use. By having the Drill Doctor, these "rejected" bits that once I didn't care about anymore now form the core of the tools that I pick up first.

I work as a fleet mechanic and do a lot of van body repairs which involve drilling steel and aluminum regularly. A Co worker of mine showed me how to sharpen the bits on a grinder and it works absolutely fine and perhaps even quicker than this.

I have the 750X I think the only difference is it can handle bigger bits. But You can buy the chuck to accommodate the 135* is supposed to keep the edge longer than the 118* I like the 118* split bit

great review -- great pointers on using the drill dr. wow, this was posted over 4 yrs ago and i'm just now finding out about the drill dr.! i gotta' crawl out from under this rock that i've been liven in! got one question. when you inserted the drill bit at the 1st station, you set it up for 118 deg., yet when you put it into the actual cutting/sharpening station, you set it to 135 deg. why is that? also kind of related to that is, what's the purpose of the different degree settings at the 1st station if you only have 2 sharpening choices at the 2nd station (118 and 135 degrees)?

had to go back and look at this again because the manual is so unclear about the alignment set up ... IMO, the white lines on the chuck mean nothing but rather go by the stepped projections on side of the chuck to align the chuck/bit combo at the 118 mark. Done this and the bits sharpened perfectly.

Heres what you need to know about the DD. The indexing system doesnt work with every brand of bits because many use an odd twist rate. If the twist rate of your bits is compatible, nothing on the market compares to the results. If the twist rate of your bits isnt compatible, its just going to be a frustrating mess. I have a set of snap on bits, they come out perfect every time. It just ruins a set of makita bits I tried.

I think you are mistaken on the angle notches. The manual states that 135 is the mark to the left, or toward the - of the 118 mark.

A lot of people like the DD and a lot don't. It's better to learn to sharpen a twist drill by hand, on a bench grinder. Learn your drill point geometry. DD is made by the company that makes the Darex drill sharpener. Awesome machines but very expensive. I may buy one of these for small drills. My old eyes aren't what they used to be. Remember, check your drill points with a protractor and ruler. Angles and lengths are important. Using a punch mark will help keep the drill from walking. Thanks.

You can grind your bits on a bench grinder. I use an angle grinder with a tile cutting blade. Very easy to do by eye with only your fingers fellas.

It's not at all easy to sharpen a drill bit **correctly** on a bench grinder. That was the final in my machining course in college after having completed several lathe and mill projects that were toleranced to 0.0001". If you can free hand a drill bit to 118 degrees, *easily*, I'll dunk the moon through the rings of Saturn and sell a baby a bridge. Can you make a marginal impact on a grinder? Sure... It's won't be right though.

Maxwelhse if you think that a tool like this will sharpen a drill bit perfectly for a job "toleranced to 0.0001"", you don't belong in a workshop. not to mention that for a job with a tolerance in that range, you cannot use a normal drill bit. this tool is to get a ruined drill bit back to a useable condition, not to bring it to brand new.

Just as in chainsaw dust size, tells you how sharp your blade or chain is. Fine dust is a dull blade and course dust is a sharp blade. Sharp blades cut while dull blades grind, hense the difference in dust particle size. You can see the details here. These are amazing tools and they are made by a company in Bend Oregon. The proof is in the pudding, but in this case it is the dust.

That was a nice review. Nice job. On those titanium Coated drill bits, once the coating is gone, it's gone, so, that drill will wear out faster, but it did look sharp. A Cobalt drill bit is solid metal, and will stay sharp longer every time. Looks like a nice tool though. Thanks for the review.

Titanium Nitride actually isn't all that hard nor does it reduce friction. It's mostly a marketing gimmick. If you drill 10 holes with a Ti bit the coating is gone off of the cutting edges.

Everybody talks about cutting oil but get some bit wax and you'll never use oil again.I believe the stuff I get is called Brute,I use it on bits,air saw blades,metal hole saws.....good stuff.

Eric has covered this at length, but, since I'm really bored and pretty much on a tare right now I'll hash it out for you. What Eric says, verbatim, is "buy the best quality hand tools you can afford". What I say, is buy the 400-ish piece Craftsman set (and Eric started wrenching with Craftsman too), $100 worth of Harbor Freight hammers, punches, test light, and pry bars, and go get to work. That's all you really need to get started. To be dead honest, a good 1/4" drive set and screwdrivers will get you through 80% of all automotive repairs.

Maxwelhse That is a very good comment. I always ending up getting more. As soon as I do, I end up using the new tool a lot. It's unbelievable how much time you'll spend suffering getting to a hard to reach bolt, but when you have that one more angle with a wobbler socket or universal joint, then you'll have options you didn't have before. I'm always needing a different length extension for my sockets. I don't want to repeat myself, but it's unbelievable again how much you can get done if you can play with the lengths how much easier it can get. I avoid using universal joints to get at a different angle just because they won't stay put. Even if you aren't using impact, always buy impact universal sockets and wobblers. Otherwise, I always see them break.

Hey Eric Question for you about a tool. Not sure if you have used one or not,but wanted to know if you have any input on it. It the Ross tech VW scan tool. I need to reset the basic setting on my 1999 cabrio and i also have a 2003 jetta that has a abs code. Anyway what do you think or have you another scan tool that you recommend?

I'm not Eric, but I can tell you that spending money on the the best OBD-II scan tool you can afford is a very wise investment. Research around and try to find something that will data log (which is to say that it will record sensor data as you drive), and obvious take ABS data as well. There has to be dozens on the market and most are around the $200 price range on Amazon these days. If you have a laptop the Auterra A-302 is very interesting, but you may want to do more research on it based on the lackluster Amazon reviews. I've had their scanner/logger for Palm OS (that's what iPhones were 15 years ago except they weren't phones) for over a decade and I've been very pleased with it.

Not to bust your chops but, I used a drill doctor and found they didn't really do a very good job. I have better results using a bench grinder or a vertical belt grinder. Like your videos though and keep up the good work.

the best price of a known place where I have shopped before is Northern Tool And the price is not too bad for $99 500x or $129 750x. Just wondering if a bit is broken, which is another problem other than dull that I run into a lot. Can a broken bit be grinded off even then sharpened with the DR??? I mean if it is only broken off near the top

Yes. I got one of these years ago, they don't even make the one I have anymore. Ive broken tons of bits. Just run them through a couple of times and they're good as new. I have bits that are a fraction of their original length but they still cut great.

EricTheCarGuy Yea, I know. I knew what it was for. These drill bit sharpeners have been around for many years now. I was just giving you a hard time since you did mention it at the beginning, and it was laying there on the table at the end. But then again, most folks that do this type of work but have not used this type of drill bit sharpener before, probably figured it out as to what it IS used for by the end of the video. As most good mechanics are usually pretty smart guys!

I don't like the way these sharpen on these tools. I drill through a lot of stainless steel at work and they don't work all that great after being sharpened with it. I can put a better edge on it with a bench grinder, takes a steady hand but it can be done. I personally think they are better ground perpendicular to the edge if you understand what I mean.

You eliminate walking by punching a small mark onto the material before you drill.

Never touch the just drilled hole with bare finger, it may be hot or sharp edged to cause an injury.

I just did it today at work and it worked just fine.just know if its broke you have to work a little longer to get past the bad meat on the bit. But yes for me it did work

Okay I tried to go to the Web page but would not let me type the question do to too many characters. 1. Will the Drill Dr. sharpen broken bits? (Will it put a new tip on the bit) 2. Will it sharpen left hand turn bits like the kind used for easy out drills? The small ones in particular it is not that they get dull as much as they just brake too easy. Maybe because they are dull I am putting to much pressure but when they brake it would be nice to put a new tip on them.

Yes it does broken drill bits. Typically it simply requires doing the procedure twice to get it perfect depending on the angle you choose. Like eric said, listen to the machine. You will be able to tell when it's no longer cutting. Then simply re-chuck the drill bit again and repeat. As for left hand drills the standard setup cannot accomplish this task. The machine can do this but the chuck is different for left handed drill bits. You can purchase just the alignment chuck for left hand drill bits for this machine. This machine can even take a blank shaft and put a cutting tip on it.(obviously without the fluting). It also can handle carbide bits. I do not recommend using this with aluminum drill bits with carbide insert tips however. (generally the average joe doesn't have aluminum/carbide drill bits anyways). I highly recommend drill doctors to everyone.

I used the stopwatch on my phone and your last hole with the split actually took 4 seconds longer.

Yes, even without timing it, the last one actually seemed to take longer as well. Something did not seem right when he said it was faster. The first two seem to take about the same amount of time(excluding "walking" of the bit), the last one took the longest.
