Your work is very beautiful! I am about to do a portrait of a horse that looks very much like this one. I might try this technique and the Pastelmat surface. Thank you for sharing your talent!

Amazing how the colors pop when the water was added. Your tutorials are extremely helpful. Beautiful as always!

Hi Mary Kay, lovely to see you over here. Hopefully the little videos will improve with practice but yes, a lot of people compare it to those magic pictures you just added water to as a child

I was wondering about that . Can anyone please answer me this ? Is that water pen throwing just water or water color in liquid ? I'm confused lol but it seems from your comment above that it was just water that squirted outut. What's this pen called and where does one buy it ? ;)

This technique with the watercolors as a base layer is great. Have you also tried this technique on watercolor paper?
@madisquizz96796 жыл бұрын
I was just wondering, how do you get it so that the pigments dont all smudge together when you add the water? I have tried this technique before and had some trouble with the colors blending when i do not want them to. Do you have a certain way of going about adding the water so that they dont blend?

Might be a silly question but why not just use watercolour? Is there a difference using watercolour as opposed to watercolour pencils and if so what is it?
@AnimalArtbyLAW7 жыл бұрын
artbabe77 If I just use watercolour I usually end up in a muddy mess . The pencils allow me to place the pigment exactly where I need it to be and in what quantity and then I just add water. Much more control
@EKS497 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply, some don't bother. I have watercolour pencils but never used them as yet but I want to which is why I watched your video. I am interested in your method and how pencils give more control over a brush. Can you explain further or point me in the direction of similar videos so I can learn? Thanks.

I have some downloadable tutorials on my website but also now have longer videos with voiceover that take you through the whole process in detail on my patreon. I literally just got off a flight from the US where I have doing a workshop tour teaching this method to other artists

Ann what do you use to get your subjects outline traced out onto the pastelmat as using an eraser isnt an option if using a grid method.

Can the Albrecht Durer pencils be used dry just like Polychromos? Any differences when both are used dry? Thanks!
@AnimalArtbyLAW7 жыл бұрын
Hi Toby Yes, they can be used just dry too. In fact I only used them dry for the first 18 months as I was too nervous to add water. When dry they do differ as the Polys are oil based so have a sheen to them.
@AnimalArtbyLAW7 жыл бұрын
I actually used Polys for the top layers of this one, you can see the finished piece here facebook.com/AnimalArtByLAW/photos/a.468627769855504.125935.454629974588617/1373607376024201/?type=3&theater

Animal Art by LAW Thanks for the helpful replies! Do you mean to say the albrechts have a sheen while the polys do not? My thoughts are to get the albrechts since they can be used both dry and wet but polys can only be used dry. The albrechts seem to be more value for money in this way.
@AnimalArtbyLAW7 жыл бұрын
Hi, no, the Albrechts have a duller look as they have a small amount of water soluble was binder in the pigment. This dissolves when water is added. The Polys are oil based so they leave a very light oil effect sheen. You can use mineral spirits & other blenders to the Polys but they do work in a different way to the ADs. My suggection is that if you have a few certain colours that you always work in, but some open stock of both & try them before committing to a huge set.

Hi there! Thank you for replying, it gives a lot of insight to us beginning art lovers. If I use the water color pencils dry, once the art is completed, can I spray fixatives? If I do, I am wondering if the wet fixative will cause the pigment on the paper to run and spoil the artwork.

What paper are you using pls? Is it watercolour paper and does it need to be heavy weight? Thks.

Is the Pastelmat like the sanded pastel paper?
@AnimalArtbyLAW7 жыл бұрын
Which sanded pastel paper Sherida? Just so I know what you might be comparing it to. Thanks
@sheridaribordy43107 жыл бұрын
Pastel papers with coated surfaces are specifically designed to help hold pastel. The coarser or denser the texture is of the surface, the greater the ability to hold multiple layers of pastel. I copied this from the website that sells the paper that I was speaking of. I don't know the name of the paper but it is like fine sandpaper? I don't know what Pastelmat is.
@AnimalArtbyLAW7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sherida, sorry fpr the late response. It does sound similar to the Pastelmat which is patented by Clairefontaine. It is sprayed onto a backing & is like a very fine textured sanded paper. Not the same as Uart sanded paper that I have tried. Obviously it was first designed for use with pastels as the tooth holds the pigment without the usual need for fixative

Thumbs down! You are a skilled artist, but this horse was a terrified and horrible horse! A horse in a blue mask? Or is this a new race of horses?
@AnimalArtbyLAW3 жыл бұрын
Rex, this is the underpainting. If you go look at the finished piece he was not a terrified, blue face horse by the end. It was just a small part of the creative process
