yes absolutely. I would lay down a clear layer with softener and set it. Do that a couple of times. Depending on what kind of canvas you require. Layer it as much as needed. Then paint away. This way you have no bleed. Seal it then paint it. You wont need to thing it if you are hand brushing details. You can even fill a paint pen. I have some loaded for detail work.

Question for leather roller skate project. I'm doing a 3 color ombre look. To achieve this could I use dye on this factory painted white leather after I deglaze it? Or is airbrushing a far better approach? Thanks for your advice!

It may be painted white and not accept dye. A lot of times you can keep wiping after the deglaze and that paint will come off too. I would just use that as a nice base and paint them.

Which product would you recommend for faux suede?
@JoeKyser
@JoeKyser 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of times the faux stuff wont take dye at all. Even though suede normally gets dyed, in some cases of faux suede you just have to go for paint. There is no other option. What I like to do is be sure its prepped good. Its typically sealed. Hit with an acetone cloth. If you put masking tape.down on it and pick it back up that will get all the little pieces of stuff and refluff it. Then spray Angelus and make sure it has some softner in it. Real light coats and seal with sealer. I have really good luck with it and have been able to coat it and it not look like paint. Real thin coats is the key with softener and thinner.

What do you think is a better choice when working with the synthetic suede that Nike uses on Air Max 1's that seems more like felt. Would suede dye be a better choice, or acrylic paint with a fabric medium like GAC-900? I am very inexperienced working with both.
@JoeKyser
@JoeKyser 4 жыл бұрын
Thats a really good question. The synthetics can be tricky as dyes usually dont take very well. Using the paint with an additive like the softener is a great way to get around this issue. It's not always necessary though. I usually do a test on a tiny spot you won't see just to see if it will accept dye. I'd rather use a dye if it's possible. It doesn't build up like the paint does. I've made mixes with gac additive and liquid acrylics like ironlak that work just as well too but again if I can stick with the dye I'd rather do that. It always seems to work out much better. I've had good luck with them on synthetic suede. The dye will give a much better finish.
@BlakeSuperior_Beats
@BlakeSuperior_Beats 4 жыл бұрын
@@JoeKyser Thanks for your detailed reply. The main thing is I don't want the finish to turn out smooth like leather. I want it to still look like synthetic suede. I'm starting off with a completely white shoe, so I'm not sure there's anywhere that you wouldn't notice a test spot. Once you're done with dye, is there anything you cover it with to make sure it doesn't rub off on furniture, etc?
@JoeKyser
@JoeKyser 4 жыл бұрын
@@BlakeSuperior_Beats yes, I use 3m fabric sealer. It's in a purple spray can. You can find it at Walmart in the fabric section. There's also a green can that's for water repellant that works super good too. I usually spray them both. A coat of each. You have to be sure your 100% happy with the finish before you spray it on. Once you seal it, its sealed for good pretty much. It absorbs into it and does a great job of protecting it.

Question: I have DS Oregon 5's recent release. And want to dye some panels in yellow and red. What process to follow for suede to look like from factory? As I get it that applying dye on dark green will make it Brown etc...is there any white primer to dye/paint? Want to get it done properly. Thanks
@JoeKyser
@JoeKyser 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah thats the issue when covering another color. I would test spots to see how it reacts when you wipe acetone on it. I would want to see if I can take some of the green pigment out first. If its possible then strip as much as possible. If not its still good prep. You need to at least dewaterproof it with the acetone. Your going to want to lay a white base down before applying rhe yellow. The red can be prepped with grey for best results but may not be necessary.

If paint is scraping off, I doubt dye will absorb into it. Whats it made of? Is it real leather? If so you probably just need to take the protective coating off thats all. Nothing will stick to it permanently.

No it wont work right. Synthetic fabrics are hard to dye. They rarely accept the dye. It might Change the color but wont stay adhered to the fabric so it fades out real easy. Angelus paint with softener. Super light coats and full activation of the softener between coats will get the job done. You can soak the paint in and then activate the softner with heat for like ten minutes. That will be permanent, ive done fabric vapor maxes. I hate doing them to be honest but it is possible

I'm not going to say no because it's not necessarily true that can't use it. You can use it in some situations. I guess it all depends on exactly what you're going to be doing with it. The Leather paint is really flexible when dry. That's what allows it to stay looking the way it does.

I once had the Problem that the leather paint on the toe box area startet to crack after only a few days . I prepped the shoe properly and the layers weren't too thick too so I wasn't sure what I did wrong. Would mixing in a little bit of 2Soft in my leather paint only for these typical "creasing/wrinkling" areas help reduce cracking / chipping ? I'm using an airbrush btw. Thx for help 🤙🏻
@JoeKyser
@JoeKyser 4 жыл бұрын
Even if it's thick it should stay pliable at least for a few days if not months. One thing I can think is that maybe the paint wasn't mixed good enough. 2soft is really just meant for fabric. It's has heat activated ingredients in it. That won't help pliability. I make leather paints from acrylic paints. All I use is clear coat or neutral and high pigmented acrylic paint. That works great. I think the leather paint itself should be good enough and you shouldn't be getting cracks. That's a tough one. I don't have any experience with cracking to be honest. I'm not saying it doesn't happen at some point. Maybe after wearing the shoes enough. Did you put a finish over it? Oh I always make sure the shoes are cured for at least a week before anyone wears them. Thats why I always tell people it will be 4-6 weeks to deliver the shows. It gives me plenty of time to cure them before I send them off. I learned my lesson from that a couple of times when I first started. It cost me a couple pairs of shoes but I realized quickly I was delivering them way too quick after they were done. Once the customer receives them they want to put them on right away and weer them. Asking them to let them sit was like a joke. What kind of shoe was it?

@@JoeKyser I am having the same issue as this person. Buuut after reading your comment, I guess I didn't let my shoes cure long enough. I have been experimenting for a while and I have the fabric shoe painting down, it's just the synthetic leather that I am struggling with. I use the Angelus paints and their 600-Finisher and have had all my projects crack. I will try curing longer. Do you have any recommendations for other acrylic sealants/finishers besides the Angelus ones?
