I appreciate that you show and discuss your bad shots. It’s nice knowing even the pros have some bad ones.

Thanks! Yeah, I think if you're learning this stuff, it's important to see what the messed up shots look like, that way you get a better feel for knowing what the settings and outcomes will look like.

Hi, great video. I was wondering how this technique could be integrated into the Sony A9ii since it uses an electronic shutter primarily. I shoot motorsport and would live to introduce a flash/strobe

Hi , Congrats for this video and this pics. At minute 3:35 which flash mode did you use?
@BrentHall3 жыл бұрын
Idk, that was a few years ago now. If I didn't say in the video, then I was probably using manual mode.

Hi Brent - Are you ever concerned about the Flash effecting the riders and possibly causing a problem with them? I have never shot bike riders, but I am always hesitant to use my flash at my Grandson’s basketball game for fear that the flash would disorient the players and just wondered if you ever have that issue with the bike riders?. Love your videos - they are very helpful!
@BrentHall5 жыл бұрын
I've never had a problem with it. I've photographed thousands of bikers, and have been photographed with flash as a biker myself.

Brent, watched your excellent video about using flash at a criterium. Recently I went to a crit and I did not see anyone using flash so I got cold feet not knowing if there are any ethical concerns I wasn't aware of. Have you come across any thing about the ethics of using flash at criterium races? Love you videos.
@BrentHall2 жыл бұрын
I've never had a problem with it. I've talked with a lot of cyclists about it (and am a cyclist myself) and most everyone says that during the day like that it's really not too noticeable or bothersome, especially since it's not overpowering the daylight, it's just adding a little bit of fill.

@@BrentHall Thanks Brent. I was in a shaded area and so were the racers as they went by. Would have been nice to use flash but I got pictures anyway, just not with the pop.

Hello, Just finished watching this video.I thought it was full of some good information. However, I would like to know if the flash interferes with the riders at all? Also, just for my own info, may I ask what flash unit you are using? Thank You
@BrentHall5 жыл бұрын
Hey Daren, I've never had it be an issue with bothering the cyclists. I've shot this event for over a decade, as well as ridden in it and I've never had an issue. The flash I'm using is linked in the video description.

Brent, could you please tell me why is flash needed to light the photo and not the video? Is it because the cyclists are moving so fast in the video that you can't see the shade on the cyclists?
@BrentHall5 жыл бұрын
Well, if you were doing video and had a scene with a lot of dynamic range and you needed some light in the shadows, then you could definitely get you some good quality and high powered continuous lighting, but that would be expensive and pretty hard to set up and deal with in a scene like a bike race. But yeah, essentially the riders are moving too quickly in the video for it to matter as much as it does when you're freezing them for a photo.

Hello how are you? Congratulations on the video, I just found it in a KZbin search. Can you help me understand something? How can I, a Brazilian photographer, work as a freelancer in sporting events such as races, obstacle races, trail races, etc.? Is there any company that hires foreigners to work as freelancers? If yes, what do you need? My intention is to start at the beginning of 2024 at sporting events around the world. My dream is to be a sports photographer around the world covering this together with a team. It's a shame that here in Brazil we don't have much information about access in America and Europe. I thank you for your attention.

Good video. I've photographed (or at least attempted) many bike races -- my son races. I like the idea of using a flash in a panning shot during a crit. I've been wanting to try, but didn't know what set-up to go with. Knowing about 2nd shutter and 1/4 to 1/2 power on the flash is good info. I look forward to trying out this technique in upcoming races. Thank you for the advise and good content! @133.steve.t

Can that flash light distract bikers,can those light afect on their eyes and male them blind on second and maybe fall from bike?
@BrentHall4 жыл бұрын
It's unlikely. I've been both photographing these cyclists and other action sports for the last 2 decades and am also a competitive cyclist and I've never seen any issues with that, nor have I ever experienced anything like that while I was competing.
