Was an electronics hobbyist decades ago and always used big, thick, flux-core solder, never giving a thought to the flux or what it did. Now that I’ve gotten back into it, I’m using super-thin Japanese solder paired with brush-on, liquid flux. It makes soldering so easy it’s ridiculous. Also dipping my desoldering wick into right the flux bottle before using it makes it absorb solder 10x better. I’m so glad I finally figured out flux!

Like some of the other posters, I've been soldering with just rosin core solder and no flux other than that. Most sources I found mention about the flux cleaning properties but very few explained the wicking and how it makes the solder stick to things and flow better. Excellent video and right to the point.

Me too! I’ve thrown things away because I thought they were just impossible to solder due to age or something. Flux core solder has been the only reason I ever fixed stuff, probably. Someone told me once it was the best, but didn’t say why so I just bought it.

I’ve been soldering for around 10 years now not using flux and spending time globing solder and hoping it sticks . Redid my boat trailer wiring last year and it’s going to crap already because I didn’t use marine grade wiring and connections . Tackling that project now and glad to know to use solder / flux properly . Thank you

Flux makes a huge difference helping solder to stick. But working on marine wiring, it may also be necessary to use some steel/brass wool to scrub the surface first. If there's too much corrosion, flux can have a hard time getting through it.

I was putting in a water heater. My plumber father was watching. I couldn't get the solder into the pipe joint and said I'm in over my head. My father said, "just add more flux". Boom, Bob's your uncle. Turned out perfect.

😅 I spent a whole day trying to stick wires with solder to a plug that would just unstick every time. How I managed to stick it without knowing this in the end is a miracle considering it was an ebike. Thanks I think every one who solders without flux needs to see this. Thanks! 👍

Wow, fantastic video! It was really interesting to watch the copper wire get as bright as new. Really makes sense that when repairing copper water line, using flux is a must because the old copper gets very dull and tarnished.
