Can't believe I didn't find your video until *after* I solved the issue this exact same way. I've been looking for a solution and tried everything from running a cable from a different socket (didn't work due to a silently faulty extension cable) to buying an active UPS (which was *way* too loud on its own, but helped me find out that the extension cable was faulty) and even ripping the ground prong out (fire hazard!). I ended up buying one of those as a final resort before just living with a high-amped signal on low speaker volume, and it works like magic. Bless the engineers.

Just got my version of a ground loop isolator from my focusrite TS -> rca -> ground loop -> stereo. It works well. One thing that may or may not be interesting to know is that it supposedly inverts the output. Which is not problem if you only listen to it. Thinking of my own setup with monitors I suppose there could be a potential problem with different inversions with headphones running at the same times as with studio monitors. I do not have grounded outlets and the outlets for the stereo is from another wall outlet than the computer. I *believe* one way to have fixed it would have been to have all electricity taken from the same outlet (although haven't tested).

The ground loop isolator is transformer coupling your signal. It may reverse the polarity, but that's not the real trick. The real trick is the transformer prevents DC from being passed through. DC is not a big deal when it's small and clean but is problematic otherwise. Yes it will have a small effect on sound, it will tend to reduce transients and sustain "body" producing what musicians refer to as "sweetness". This is similar to a musician using a direct box between their instrument and the PA system except the musician's direct box will also alter the impedance of the signal while the RS unit is likely 1 to 1 affair.

USB audio interfaces amplity it also , i have gone from using a pci sound card to a usb interface and i never had this high pitched whine with my pci card , only now with this interface. Very anoyying , i'm using a digital spdif output from my synth into the interface and no whine from that , but my mic pre amp has an xlr or jack output to the interface and that's where the sounds comes into my chain , and for vocals its the worst because even very faint whine in back ground is noticeable on vocal track ! not sure how i'm going to overcome it but going to need to try something !

Thanks a lot Matthews for your kind and prompt reply! I assume this kind of Ground Loop Isolators boxes are also effective to remove those annoying high frequency pitch noises that are coming from the computer for example when I load a sample instrument into NI Kontakt or copying files from one hard disk to another. I had this issue for a long time and tried all sort of strategies to eliminate it without any success. At some point I thought it was to do with my firewire audio interface ASIO driver which is several years old now but then tried a new USB interface with recent drivers and the problem still remains... Hope I will get to the bottom of this issue with one of those Ground Loop Isolators box. I assume that to operate one of these Ground Loop Isolators boxes, I will plug the XLR cables from my active monitors into one end of the box and then use another two pairs of XLR cables to go from the box to my mixer, is this how it works? Thanks and best regards, Max

I know it is frustrating having nice equipment and hearing unwanted sounds in the speakers. Assuming the signal is coming from your mixer into your speaker, I believe you would need to put the Isolator some where in that path. i.e. mixer output > isolator > speaker. Just like the isolator is inbetween the output from my sound card into the input of my speaker. This enables it to break the ground loop. My current knowledge is limited about the subject, but, I know the ground loop isolator that I bought stopped the sounds that happened when moving my computer mouse, loading a program, or loading plug ins. I don't notice any loss of sound in the speakers either.
I had HORRIBLE ground loop on my lsr 305s. Solved it by buying a cheap dac and(most important part) connected it to my PC via optical toslink cables.

Make sure you have the most current PC driver installed. I just installed a Yamaha mixer which hooks to JBL powered studio monitors. As soon as I hooked the system to my laptop USB port, my speakers started popping and making all kinds of unwanted sounds. I had to d/l the genuine Yamaha Steinberg USB driver to 100% fix the problem. Wow, I am relieved because my electrical outlets are not grounded - neither are the Clubs I work at. Grounding is important but the correct driver makes all the difference. My system is all digital now until the signal leaves the mixer. All my connections are balanced. RCA cables are unbalanced plus the ground loop might be limiting your fidelity. Hope this helps.

I heard the ground loop isolator flips the phase

Hello. yes i know the video is from 2017. The problem with desktop computers is that everything is connected to house GND from 110V - 220V power. This means that the audio signal GND is the same as the Power GND. This is something I do not like but unfortunately this is how all stationary computers are made.

What is interesting is that I think changing out the hard drive with a SSD solve the issue. I can't say for 100% sure, because I messed with a bunch of settings before taking off the ground loop issolator, but using the exact same gear with a SSD provides no issue. I tried 4 different USB interfaces, new studio monitors, balanced cables, changed settings, all the stuff that people in the comments suggest, but none of that worked until I replaced the hard drive.

@@MatthewStratton Not for me. I have an SSD computer, and a pair of JBL 305P MKII, and still have that noise. But I just thought it's because I use unbalanced cables.

@@ethai1 I tried changing cables to balanced cables and plugged them into speakers with balanced inputs. Neither helped.

@@MatthewStratton Dang it. Some people suggest using balanced cables, and others (like in this video) suggest a ground loop isolator and im not sure what to do.
@MatthewStratton4 жыл бұрын
@@ethai1 the only way to know is to try it. Can't hurt to have balanced cables anyway. The only thing is that if it doesn't work, then you still will need to find what will.

isn't it ironic, this has been true for me in other ways, its not even what i produce that makes the most hits on youtube or an audience, its what you produce about 'how' your producing lol that gets the most hits its strange how things work. it reminds me of written classical music sometimes

I found out how to fix my problem. I bought a Vizio flat screen and when I hooked it up to the computer I got a buzzing sound. More so when the screen was white, less when there is color. I tried changing resolution and so forth. Didn't work. So I took the vizio remote and tried the menu and nothing worked until I turned down the volume on the remote and there it was. You see the computer runs its own volume to the TV from the sound board and the TV increases the noise from the compute not the volume.

I bought a 70" Vizio a few weeks ago and the RCA audio outputs have a nasty high frequency noise/ground loop going on...very noticeable on my stereo when volume gets low or you pause it. I'm hoping an audio isolator will fix it.

The issue sounds like the monitors are not " Shielded " or that you simply NEED to be using balanced TRS cables. A shielded monitor means that it is protected from the feed coming from your computer and a BALANCED cabled is almost always the fix for this issue. I can also highly recommend NOT using RCA cables to hook up speakers. TRS or XLR. Done.
@MatthewStratton6 жыл бұрын
I explain Everything in the video, but here is an update. 1) There are no TRS inputs to this monitors. 2) I tried my new monitors (Yamaha HS8s) WITH TRS balanced cables and there IS still an issue when I plug in a USB cable to that computer. The issue is with the computer not the cables. I can use the speakers fine on my mac mini and also fine on my windows 10 tablet using a USB interface with no ground loop isolater. Thanks for the comment and suggestion.

If your monitors only have RCA jacks it sounds like upgrading your monitors is your best bet. No since in buying a dress for a pig.

what if i have xlr cables running from my speakers to my mac through the headphone jack?? Didn't have this issue when i first bought them, if i did id move the power cable from my mac and it would stop.. now its constant.

Dade Lewis there are ground loop isolators that you can buy that you can plug your cables into. You would have to search for your specific cable type. Haven't tried them though...but they should work if you are having the same exact issue as me.
