There is so little content about heather shield use, and even less about heather shield and spear. Thank you!

Love the spear grip with the shield. Is it just a speculation from your experience or you also have some source you got inspired by? :D

This was very good - well presented. Plus timely. I am in the process of assembling a short spear (6 feet; 2 meters) for hallway defence in a non gun area. I was wondering how to go about incorporating a shield and this is so helpful. Now all I have to do is make it bulletproof and light weight. Oh, yes ... they get to have guns ...

Hypothetically, I wouldn't use a spear in a hallway. Not unless you have multiple people on your side with them. If I did have a spear, I'd also have a backup short sword.

reenactors have been using the spear/shield combination for a long time as depicted here. But this is a good study nonetheless.

I've seen some theories about a guige strap making that holding out less fatiguing on the shoulder and arm, maybe because the back is taking some of the weight because the strap braces it. And a cool thing I saw where the shield could be quickly thrown onto the back to hold a sword with two hands. Lemme see if I can find those...

Great video. You've got me very interested in the heater shield. I practice a lot of sword and buckler, mostly Liegniczer and bolognese concepts. Would you be willing to sell a heater with that configuration? How much would that cost and how would I go about ordering one from you?

Hi, thanx for your thoughts. I copied the same shields straps and would like to add one thing I found on mine. When you hold the forward strap I can grab one of the main straps with your thumb. This give me the same control as if I were to hold the two main straps. If in clear I can link a short clip.

@raphlvlogs271
@raphlvlogs271 3 жыл бұрын
were cutting pole arms also used with heater shields?
@BladeFitAcademy
@BladeFitAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. Cutting pole arms requires generating power by crossing the body and activating the hips. Add dexterity considerations and there's no room for shields. With spears you don't need a rotational axis to generate power, just stepping hard and following through is enough to pin an unarmored man to a tree.

Did you have to do your own straps or can you find sheilds pre-made with that configuration.

I made my own. Thrift stores have inexpensive genuine leather belts to be repurposed. That's how I started. Now I just buy leather at wholesale for projects that I do.

you could also use a shortspear (1.20 to 1.50 meters) with a thiner shaft (lighter and doesn't need to be that resilient because you would be using your shield to block, not your spear)... why don't I see that in the videos?
@samuelbishop1701

Usually harder to beat a sword user if you don't have a formation. You lose alot of manuverability with only a single hand. Not impossible to do though with practise.

Could this be done with a kite shield?
@BladeFitAcademy
@BladeFitAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on how the kite shield was strapped. We have many examples of different configurations. But I suspect the vast majority of kite shields wouldn't allow for spear to be in two hands. As primarily a cavalry shield, the kite shield wouldn't usually have focused on that sort of thing. This is conjecture on my part.

I train for HEMA and Modern Sword Fighting tournaments. Honestly though, the more time in I have the less important the labels we use. I've done a smidge of Buhurt and have practiced SCA rules as well. Every expression is another simulation that has a valid focus on a piece of the whole.
