Spoilers Essentially, the Doctor technically got away with it, but the team really did try everything to get him. Since there is no illegal crime or witness who wants to come forward, the Dr. Gilbert is safe. The one family who could come forward don't because of a sad and a bit twisted reasoning. They don't want to because it would reveal that their second child was merely conceived on the basis to save their first sick child with Leukemia. They didn't have matching bone marrow, so they placed their odds with Gilbert to help them conceive a child with matching marrow, but it was already impossible because it's Gilbert's sperm, not the fathers, so it was never gonna work. The Leukemia child passed away eventually, while their second child is still living. The parents want to testify because Gilbert essentially lied to them which they believed caused their daughter to die, but they don't want to admit that they only had their second child just for the parts.

@javierpatag36094 жыл бұрын
Like the lab doctor explains, it'd only happen if the babies hooked up with someone else who has it- - such as one of their half-siblings by Dr. Delbert. Yes, CF is bad, but that's on top off these kids having committed *incest* with a half-sibling. And that's very plausible because Delbert's patients would have never known they all had the same sperm donor, with medical privacy laws keeping Delbert's identity secret. It's only because the NYPD and DA were investigating him that they found out.
@Treblaine4 жыл бұрын

@rustinstardust20944 жыл бұрын
@Amilah Sure, most kids without two parents yearn at some point for another parent. Just like most kids with two parents yearn at some point to *not* have two parents. The grass is always greener on the other side. And btw, I've actually known plenty of people who grew up in single parent households who couldn't care less that they didn't have two parents.
@rustinstardust20944 жыл бұрын
@Amilah Actually, they have registries where siblings can contact each other. The kids really love meeting their bio brothers/sisters for the first time and comparing what they have in common. Of course there's a chance a sibling might hate the others...but there's also the chance an in-house sibling might hate their brother or sister. As for encouraging incest...that's already a problem for people who aren't aware their father isn't their birth father because the mother had an affair. It's kinda scary how many people are unaware of their lineage and could potentially hook up with an unknown sibling. At least my kid will *know* there's that issue, and if he/she hasn't met all fifteen (or whatever the cap is; it depends on the bank) of their siblings, they'll know to look out for signs they could be related. Worst case scenario, there's always a blood test.
@rustinstardust20944 жыл бұрын

For a long time, some of the doctors you went to we're saying that radiated iodine is the only solution for her, even though it might make her radioactive for a little bit and would increase her chances of developing some kind of cancer. It made her extremely anxious, terrified, and got her crying through the night. But she was able to get a second opinion and what suggested surgery for her thyroid. Well she'll need to be able to take meds to treat the hypothyroidism that comes after the surgery, taking those meds the only downside to that. I'm fascinated by the fact that every time someone says the name of the doctor it's been dubbed over. Sometimes very poorly. What could have changed between filming and going to air? Did they find a doctor with the same name at the last minute? It couldn't have changed too much because you can see they're saying roughly the same thing in some close ups where they dub over the original line. After hitting up IMDB it seems the name was originally "Gilbert" but was changed to "Delbert" at some point in syndication but sometimes the original audio comes up as "Gilbert" while the location card that flashes during the "duh-duh" still says "Delbert". There's no reason given but the only thing that could necessitate a change like this had to be an actual doctor with that name not wanting to be associated with the episode. Maybe there's something else but that's the only thing I can think of.

One of the things watching this episode that I've come to appreciate far more is that when originally given the news about the pregnancy being terminated the doctor says that he feels for the parents more than the cops could possibly imagine. Brutal foreshadowing laid out plain as day early in the episode.

There's quite a few real cases of fertility doctors that used their own sperm, this episode was probably loosely based on one or more of them.

It's amazing the level of production TV programs have achieved since they began. I mean production in how well developed the writing, the stories, the acting; everything. Totally targeted at enticing the viewer to watch and keep watching, and sell advertising time.

1:26 1:33 and 2:24 they dubbed over Logan’s lines whenever he says Delbert. You can hear a slight change in audio quality, and the background noise gets drowned out. Interesting, could be that when they first filmed the scene that Logan maybe pronounced Delberts name wrong. By the mouth flaps sounds like he says Dillbert.

@@GosieKin It's called evidence of the affair, but it's only available on the internet archive now. Go to the law & order subreddit and you'll see a few posts on this topic, I believe linked to in the side navigation bar. Someone took the list and got video clips of almost everything.

Alright, I know it is a serious show, but it feels like a SNL sketch. They go back and tell the parents the truth, and the parents are happy the sperm is from a doctor.
@Hermititis4 жыл бұрын
It's based on a real case. SNL did a skit with John Goodman on the real case.

just watched the rest of the episode and the voiceover has me dying! they really weren't able to pronounce the Dr's name so they had to do it in post 🤣 0:10 2:20 4:16 5:05 and then 1:30 couldn't they just reshoot the scene?
@neconeconeco3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was a pronounciation issue. I think it's more likely they ran into legal trouble with a real Dr Gilbert (original name) ..

Anyone else notice they dubbed over the name of the doctor? 0:10 0:26 0:50 1:26 lol did the name they use initially belong to a real fertility doctor and they had to change it? not sure why else they would (poorly) dub over every instance of this character's name

I'm guessing there was a last minute name-change for Dr. "DELBERT". The ADR goes nuts.

It’s been a while since I watched the full episode but iirc that’s what the “Chinese wall” line refers to. McCoy was interviewing people to try and prove that the information would have fallen under inevitable discovery, with the Chinese wall being that he’s not allowed to get information from anyone with prior knowledge about the donor records, like Claire.

In recent years there has been a doctor caught in Denmark doing the same thing & fathered 60+ babies. More recently a huge scandal in the Netherlands but this time they have traced 200+ to a donor who used multiple clinics, false names, had been caught earlier & the court ordered him to stop but then he started being more devious to continue. Was active over 15+ years from student days.
