PAPER! It is so important that when cutting corners that you don’t buy cheap papers! You can use cheaper paint but the frustration level is so much higher with bad paper! Even brushes can be marginalized when painting but the paper is what your painting will live on forever. DaVinci Paints in California has a professional level paint selection in every medium, from watercolor to oils! And they are very very reasonably priced, I even remember spending more on student grade paint cost him more they were not as good as my Da Vinci watercolors! Be safe and take care!

I totally agree about paper! I've started using 100% cotton paper from various brands and experimenting on those, and I think that a thin, flimsy watercolor paper will completely ruin the experience. Out of supplies I'd splurge on, I'd definitely choose paper

Inexpensive supplies list... For watercolor: try shinhan you can get up to 32 colors for like 28$ or another option is the Paul rubens student range price is around the same as shinhan. For gouache: the arteza brand is a great starter set and it’s also inexpensive or if you’re willing to have less colors but good quality the 6 pack of winsor and Newton is great but honestly I had it before arteza and after using arteza I don’t use it anymore For acrylic: the liquitex basics are really good I was worried at first but they have great coverage and they’re easy to use For markers: ohuhu is the way to go For pencils: i love my prismacolors and you can actually get them at a decent price now For pens: I use micron pn they have a plastic nib and give you easy to control line variation For sketchbooks: if it’s for sketching/practice I use the cannon watercolor spiral bound sketchbook and I use alll my mediums in it and they all work great but for something I’d wanna sale I use fabriono I got 52 sheets for 20$ off amazon. Hope that gives anyone some ideas or help they may need.

I also like prima marketing and got tropicals for like $17 (12 set) they're all amazing except koi is just a bit more grainy. You will have to look around for these deals and sometimes get them already opened and tried out (but not really used). And some better paper could be fabriano studio paper. The first set of watercolors I used were similar to these, really inexpensive and chalky. They were fine, at first, but eventually as I improved or tried to paint something ambitious, I noticed that the paints would not perform in the way that I wanted and it really did become frustrating to paint things and do actual watercolor techniques. It is possible to make art with cheap art supplies, but some art supplies really do "fight you" in a way and it could hinder your progress with the medium after using them for a while. So I definitely agree with buying an affordable primary colors set if its possible for your budget. (Also yes, those Michael's coupons and Jackson's sales are so so nice when they are available!!) Kinda long comment, but yeah loved the video :)

Your painting came out so beautiful despite the struggle with materials. I feel similarly on the topic of buying expensive art supplies vs buying supplies that are right for someone based on current needs. There's sometimes too much brand dependency or elitism in the art community. Like its okay to be a fan of a brand. I just wish more artists wouldn't go overboard, and start getting controlling over other artists about it. Something else I've kept is mind also is that some artists are kind of brand ambassadors for certain products. So I just try out what looks interesting to me, with my own personal budget in mind and tune out everything else I guess.

I personally like this little set and have used much much worse at the same price point so in comparison these are decent. I don't use them for anything I would consider finished though, I use them in my sketchbook so that I don't feel pressure to make it look good because I'm using my good supplies. What I've found is that they look better on paper that is not meant for watercolors better than they do on watercolor paper a lot of the time and even the more expensive paints don't shine on that paper. I wasn't feeling so good about the sketchbook I was working in so this was my way of saying "It's just a sketchbook I don't care it doesn't have to be beautiful" and just have fun. I've even dug out the paints I couldn't stand to work with because it was in a similar palette design and filled it with another student grade paint to supplement colors I found myself mixing a lot or was curious about playing with. For my purposes, it's all in how you decide to use them. They're by no means my go to palette and never will be, but they're fun to play with during warmups when I'm feeling in the mood to be a bit messy.
@SaraTepes4 жыл бұрын
I love that! I think that's a really great mindset to have, and sketchbooks are so important to be free and experiment in, and using a good inexpensive art supply is really freeing if you don't want to feel like you're wasting good paint. I think my set is also super old because of how badly they reactivated, but I found it difficult to produce a nice, finished piece :/ I would reach for these if I'm taking a really chill sketchbook trip to the park and want something compact.

Loved the video, I do have a question, what is color payoff? I would love to see what water color u recommend and maybe point out things to look for in good art supplies.

this was really nice to watch and i subscribed just now. Thank you so much for making the effort of creating your beautiful art piece through just cheap art supplies. Though I am from a country where most of the materials ain't cheap for me lmao but still keep up the great work and stay safe, healthy and sanitized. Have a wonderful day
