Interesting video. Unfortunately my ears are shot so I struggle to hear much difference although your stereo enhancer and mid boost is noticeable (just). some (professionals) would export a stereo mix and then master it, but like you, i see no problem in mixing, mastering and exporting from whithin the same project. On my master bus, I would first put a Low shelf to get rid of anything below about 30hz. Then a Mono maker (Rob Papen Master Magic) to Mono the track below 120 hz approx. Then a compressor and maximiser to achieve -14 lufs, in reality i'm happy with around -16 lufs.

Yeah, I've tried the whole separating mastering from mixing thing, but just found it to be too limiting (excuse the pun). Sometimes, even during mastering, I'll decide that there's something wrong with the mix, and since I'm a one-man outfit don't need that one-way gate getting in my way. I want to be able to tinker if I want to, and best-practice-be-damned!

Have I been setting up my projects wrong? You have a master buss then a stereo out ? I just have all my tracks / groups routed directly to stereo out ...is this a face-palm moment I'm about to have ? Very nice song BTW, I went and grabbed my planars half way through as watching on the TV obviously wasn't doing this video justice, love the vocals and the guitar

Its optional, you can do whatever you want. Having a Master Bus is just having another final stage in the mixdown. He may have his reasons why he is using that method. Its the same as analysis plugins, i have mine on the control room, but you can have them on Stereo out.

I have just begun using a master bus before the stereo out. Don't worry that it is new for you! It just allows you to control the final out AFTER the last FX. I think of it as a "safety" feature. I'll bet your previous mixes are just fine!

Sorry for the delay in replying - here's why I have two "master" outputs: 1. I NEVER automate Stereo Out. This means, for example, that if I'm making a YT video and want to quickly drop the song's level, I can... the Master Bus might have automation of it which would have to be disabled. 2. If I'm composing, and want to hear the active track much louder that the whole rest of the song I can route it straight to Stereo Out, bypassing the entire mix. 3. When I come to output mixed to wav/mp3, I always set Ozone on the Stereo Out, get the -14LUFS threshold right, then set Stereo Out to 0dB and know that it's going to work. I don't have to worry about the correct output level. The Master Bus level is much more fluid. There are probably more reasons I'm not thinking of right now. I think the topic of 2 outputs is probably deep enough to warrant a video, so I'll add it to my to-do list.
