Just in case anyone is having trouble because they are using the updated version: Go to the three dots [. . .] on the top right of the application. Then, click 'options'. Once in the 'options' menu, scroll down until you see 'Navigation'. Set the switch beneath 'Navigation' to 'On' and restart the application. When it reloads, you should be able to follow the tutorial as normal.

Great video. I'm a new DM and I've been experimenting with different ways of keeping campaign notes and homebrew notes, etc. One quick tip with linking in OneNote. If you enclose something in double brackets like [[this]] it will remove the brackets and search for a page title that matches and automatically link to it. If there is no match it will automatically create that page. For example, when you typed the PC's race of Dragonborn, you later created a Dragonborn page, copied the link, selected the text and added the link. You could have just typed [[Dragonborn]] and it would have automatically created the page and linked to it. Then you could have just moved the Dragonborn page into the Races section.

The double bracket method is very handy. It can be a bit of a pain if you have an existing page you want to link and you don't get it exact it will often create unwanted pages, but it's a handy feature.

2:07 you say there are only two layers of navigation, but you can actually have subpages of pages, and they can go to multiple depths, so you can have a subpage of a subpage. Right click on a page and you get the option "-> Make Subpage", it then tabs it in and adds a drop down arrow to the higher level page. You can use that arrow to hide the subpages if you want. Works good for something like the Calendar once get past a couple of years, demote the months and put them all under a page named the previous year.

There's also Section Groups. For example, in my Rule Notebook I have a Section Group for the Monster Manual, which contains sections that sort monster by categories (Demons, Devils, Dragons, Undead, etc). The Dragons section might have a page for Brass Dragons, under which I'd have sub-pages for Ancient Brass Dragons, Adult Brass Dragons, Young Brass Dragons, etc. Additionally, if you use Outlines on pages then the pages themselves can contain several layers of collapsible paragraphs. This really comes in handy for location pages that can be word-heavy.

Subpages actually work really well for adventure planning. I normally have all my adventures in my location page, but I've started separating them out into subpages of the main location page and it works really well. I'll be covering it in my video on planning adventures using onenote this week.

Great video. Been using OneNote to organize my campaigns and it's awesome. What I've found helpful is using DDB or another app that will provide a PDF, then just dropping the PDF for that character into it's own page. That way all of my PC's and NPC's have their character sheets readily accessible. I even hyperlink notable NPC's or encounters in my session notes right to the NPC's character sheet or encounter page.

Yeah the dragon knights and some of the pre-history was a big inspiration for some of the pre-history in my campaign too. In my setting though, both Lizardfolk and Kobolds both come from failed experiments trying to replicate the dragon knights. Kobolds view the dragon knights as legends and revere them, but Lizardfolk resent their creators and the dragon knights and live in isolation.

This is a great tutorial. I also use OneNote for running my games. If I could share a tip with anyone starting out it would be too keep things simple in OneNote. Don't go crazy with creating an entire interactive system for your campaign within it and keep in mind the things you need to run a fun game. The creator of this video does a good job at that. I've found that some things OneNote can do make running your game easier, while other things just consume a lot of time and may be fun to do, but actually don't add anything to the game when you run it at the table. Just having tabs with locations, quests, a session playbook, adventure log and some maps and tables can be enough in most cases. BTW, using DnDBeyond is really cool for copy-pasting text you need or making screenshots of monster stats and dragging these into OneNote.

Excellent point. I've seen some incredible notebooks that incorporate pretty much entire rule systems, but it's overwhelming. I will only copy core information like common rules or class information that I know I will need often. Less is definitely more.

I think it will put the whole PDF in. Might be best to print the page you want to a PDF in Adobe reader, then insert that.

I think this is an amazing solution for GMs looking to have great reference material for themselves and their players. The permissions levels though don't allow this to be a good solution for GMs that want their players to be able to edit some of their own content without allowing them to edit ALL content. BUT, the GM screen! What an idea!!! At the very least I'll have to sit down and make ones for all the systems I run. Shadowrun 4e is going to generate half the file size alone hahaha.

By using tab to indent content beneath a returned line, you can collapse everything under the returned line, which means you can have masses of content on a page but not get bogged down by it.

I'm using the free version available via the windows 10 store. It doesn't have quite as many options, but I much prefer the look. It's also the only version that is being supported going forward so better get used to it sooner rather than later.

Downloaded OneNote from the link in your description, it installed OneNote 2016 which has a different layout than yours, with tabs along the top instead of the left side. Pages do not have subtitles or show the first image as a little thumbnail either. Is anyone else encountering this? Running Windows 8.1 if that makes a difference...

Hmmm. That is odd! Only thing I can suggest is to uninstall and then search for Onenote on the windows store from the search bar (assuming windows 8 allows for that).

Looks like you're using OneNote for Windows 10, whereas I can only use OneNote 2016 or the OneNote app from the Windows Store for 8.1. Neither of those have the features or layout that yours has. Too bad...

I used my go-to desktop publishing software, Serif Page Plus. I found png clip art online and made the basic shield and then put the clip art on it.

Not sure you’d respond to a comment on an ancient video, but on the off chance you happen to see this, do you still use OneNote for archiving campaign notes or have you switched since? Heard a lot about OneNote being dead and Microsoft stopping the service in a couple years and I’m wary - but I find OneNote to be a better option than a lot of its alternatives.

When youtube shows me the comments, I still respond! I don't use OneNote anymore, mostly because I wanted a dedicated platform making features focused on worldbuilding, and with better map support. I use Legendkeeper now, which is a paid service. That said, onenote is still my recommended free platform for worldbuilding. Notion is another option, but I've not dived into that too deeply yet.

Back then I was just taking images from Google. These days I suggest using sites like "dmheroes", "portrait workshop", or even heroforge to get your images.

How do you make text boxes that aren't just tables? Like the ones you apparently copied from word. I tried, but it didn't work the same came out more like an image. Edit: Also how large are the bottles of alcohol? you could buy 500 glasses of whiskey for the price of one bottle lol

Click on any blank part of the page and it should make a text box. The dragon whiskey is exceptionally rare and that's what you pay for (like with vintage bottles in real life).

@@IcarusGames Usually they make you pay more per glass than if you were to buy the whole bottle, no? 4s x 500(glasses) = 20g. If we were to count glasses as shots a fifth of alcohol usually contains 16 shots. So the container must be much greater than even a gallon. 16 * 5 = 80spg(shots per gallon) 500/80 = 6.25 gallons of whisky. This bottle is looking more like a medium sized cask! or the bottle itself is made of gold haha. If the bottle holds less than 6.25 gallons and the containers price is negligable I would suggest raising the prices of your individual drinks! or don't it's up to you and doesn't really matter haha Also I wanted to make a text box that was still visible even if you aren't clicking on it much like when you imported from word to onenote. It seems like you use multiple screens? so I might have missed something.

When copying from word I usually highlight everything I want then click on some blank space and paste before moving the box where I want. What's the timestamp on the part you're referring to? I'll take a look.

@@MrMrkman98 That batch of text comes from a word document with a table in in. You could achieve the same effect using tables in OneNote. You can format the alignment of text and shade cells in OneNote.

If you mean the preview picture on the left, you have to be using OneNote UWP (the version included with windows 10). Right click in the sidebar and there should be an option to enable preview images or similar.

It will likely be an issue with the version you're using (images only appear as a preview on the pages in the windows 10 version, not the 2016 version) or you need to right click on a subpage and select the "page preview" option.

Do you mean in the page preview? That's a UWP (the version included with Windows 10) feature. Right click on the sidebar and there should be the option to turn on previews. Pictures in the pages themselves are added using the insert menu.

Are you using the 2016 version of OneNote? I used the Windows 10 UWP version in this video and it looks quite different on the 2016 version. If the section tab are running down the left its the UWP, if they run along the top its the 2016 version.

That's where I got the name and occupation. I modelled my starting town on Sandpoint, using a lot of the NPC names and occupations and giving them new personalities. Vinder became Romanian-sounding mage who always had what the party *needed*. He eventually went on to be a major villain.

How do you make a duplicate copy of this to edit? I am new to OneNote and this helps a tremendous amount even being read-only, but I would like to be able to customize it.

It could be an issue with OneNote servers. The app wasn't designed for the large scale sharing we're doing with the DM Bible and it breaks fairly frequently. Another option is to go to www.icarus-games.co.uk/onenote-dm-bible and download the 2016 version and do it that way.

Should do. But you can get both versions of OneNote for free. The UWP version comes with Windows 10, and you can download the 2016 version from the OneNote page.

I'm not sure I follow. What are you trying to copy? It might not copy the things in my notebook properly because you can only view it. I'll be sharing an actual template for everything this Friday.

Icarus Miniatures I looked around online and I don't think there's a solution just people complaining. It's when you have the template done and you try and copy and paste the format the tables won't copy as cut, they will paste up and down as opposed to the format you cut in. Idk if that makes sense but pretty much I can't make one blank character outline, because it rearranges it with cut and paste. PS I gave u a shout out on Matt's Reddit page lol, thanks for the videos.

I think I get you. What I do is after I've finished one character, I duplicate the page itself, then go in and change the info to retain formating.

Right click on the page, select copy, then right click on some white space in the page list and hit paste. That should work. Pretty sure I do it in this video when making the character pages.

Why are kills important to have in the status? or is it just a personal thing

Just a personal thing. My group can be a little competitive in their murder hobboness sometimes so I keep a tally. Some of them are carrying weapons that had stages activated by kill number too.

Right click any page and there should be an option like "navigation options" or similar. It's in there.

Too late for you probably, but for any future readers, any options you don't find here will likely be found by hitting the ellipses (...) in the top right-->Settings-->Options and scrolling down to enable/change a number of settings, including page previews and default pasting options.

I believe they are two separate programs. The most current version, known as the UWP, is available stand alone via the windows store or if you go to the OneNote download page, it's the default. OneNote 2016 is totally seperate, so you can have both options open at the same time.

Two reasons; first, several of them are carrying weapons with conditional modifiers based on total kills. And second, for bragging rights :)

If your section tabs are along the top you're using Onenote 2016. If your section tabs are on the left you're using the UWP version included in windows 10 (just called Onenote in the program list).
